I think just removing that small segment of the ending absolutely kept the dramatic ending from Face the Raven intact. That was my main gripe about the episode, in that it indulged itself too much with Clara and Ashildr, when that really should have been left entirely to the viewer's imagination. What ended up happening is pretty much EXACTLY like what happened with Rose - showrunner wrote the character out, but then brought the character back in a later episode to give them a happier ending.

thing is that Moffat kept doing this with all his companions except Amy and Rory, but Davies only did it once and it actually made sense and was still tragic. Do you want to know why the Ponds' death was so crushing for fans? Because they stayed dead. Most importantly, we had concrete reason to believe they were dead. We see their tombstone, and there's no longer any chance for them to return. When you constantly allow characters to come back after they 'die', viewers no longer feel for characters that die. There's no reason for them to care anymore.
@Windupchronic6 жыл бұрын
But they weren't dead. I mean, technically they were, but only because they lived their lives in the past. They still grew old together. Just as Sally Sparrow's friend did. The Doctor wasn't able to see them any more, but it's as he said in Blink: "Fascinating race, the Weeping Angels. The only psychopaths in the universe to kill you nicely. No mess, no fuss, they just zap you into the past and let you live to death." I never understood why anyone was crushed by what happened to Amy and Rory. I didn't find it crushing in the slightest. The response seemed completely disproportionate to the event. I mean, the Doctor can't see them anymore, but only because they specifically wrote in something that prevented him from going to their time period because it would blah blah paradox blah blah blah, which never made sense to me, because he and Martha got zapped into 1969, but seemed to have no trouble leaving their situation, but whatever. Honestly, everything Moffat did with the Weeping Angels after Blink was a mess. Amy couldn't even have been taken in that situation to begin with. An angel can't move if any living thing sees it. Amy turns her back. Okay, great. But the Doctor and River can still see the Angel. The Doctor is right there, and the Angel is still visible behind Amy, plus River is off center at an angle. Amy is tall, but the one thing she's not is wide. She cannot block a stone statue with her body from them both. Anyway, I didn't have time to mourn them, because I knew they were at least together, and grew old together, and the whole thing was stupid to begin with, so... no. No mourning from me. Rant over.

@@Windupchronic It's sad how you're ignorant but you choose to ignore that fact and take it up as pride. Yes, it was a mess. Not because it didn't make sense but because it was complicated, which isn't the best choice when you want your audience to understand the show but a great choice when your show is aimed at children and can stir their minds into action, trying to understand something complicated even if it might not make any scientific sense. To be fair, in the context of the show, the eleventh doctor did say to Amy that Space & Time will never make any sense, so chill out. Although it's complicated, it makes sense because Amy and Rory saw each other's death (The tombstone with the time details), this was the concept behind the Weeping Angel's Farm, it creates a fixed point in time. The universe does quite fine without time travel, so when Amy & Rory are back in time, there isn't any problem that this fixed point of time will be altered but if someone time travels back and ends up creating a tsunami that alters the fixed point, it can fuck things up at a cosmic level. Ex: The doctor takes Amy to coffee and a car ends up running her over when they were crossing the road. Amy dead before her time would be catastrophic. The Doctor and Martha didn't have any trouble because they weren't time locked into the past. The Angels merely tried to send them back to harvest their remaining energy. If in the "Time of the Doctor", the weeping angels had sent the doctor back in time on trenzalore, I think that would be the end because the doctor had observed his future on Trenzalore in the "Name of the Doctor". Luckily, that didn't happen. There is also that thing that some Angels prefer snapping people's neck to kill time instantly and others sending them back in time to let them live to death...

I never really liked Clara's ending. I would've love a heart-wrenching scene where the Doctor had to give up Clara to save the Universe from disaster, admitting he had gone too far and Clara saying goodbye, with tears in her eyes. That would've been a good ending to Clara's story. If you want a companion exit, go Doomsday style. Make people cry a little (or a lot) every time. But, as it stands, I'm dissatisfied, but not unhappy with Clara's ending. I find it too ridiculous. But, I think it still could've been much, much worse.

I personally found Clara's ultimate departure to be incredibly satisfying with my only complaint being the cheesy effects of the diner TARDIS flying through space.
@AluxDoesNotStream9 жыл бұрын
+Whovian Roxas I feel like the TARDINER is really dumb. While I do like the idea that Clara continued to interfere with The Doctor's past even after she stepped into his time stream, it's a setting that doesn't really fit very well with the rest of the episode. It did do a good job of presenting the story of Hell Bent like a true adventure written in legend which is a wonderful change from the norm. However, this could have been done around a campfire on a Coathill High school trip or he could have written it all down and read it out at a library to kids or something that didn't have to include a setting so far removed from (British) norm and/or from where the story itself took place. But nothing can possibly be perfect and it's Doctor Who, so I forgive it. :)
@markc40089 жыл бұрын
+Alexander Nisbet Actually I think it kinda DID need to be somewhere far removed from the British norm. Part of the twist that it was the Doctor losing his memory was based on the assumption that Clara in the diner was leading a completely different life. It sets it up for us to think that Clara had lost her memory, only to pull the rug out from under us.
@AluxDoesNotStream9 жыл бұрын
***** Clara didn't need specifically to be a waitress in a 1950s American diner to achieve that. That's like saying that the TARDIS needed to be a blue police box in An Unearthly Child in order for the alien concept of impossible space to be conveyed. Other things could be done to achieve the same thing, and in the case of Hell Bent, I think that using a more familiar, everyday location would have made the jumps between depicting Gallifrey and depicting The Doctor telling that story from after he's lived it less jarring. My other problem would have to be how the structure of the episode makes the appearance of Gallifrey feel less significant. Whenever the Time Lords appear in any episode of Doctor Who, I feel like they should completely dominate the presentation. In The End of Time, they are introduced as an end-part plot twist. The entirety of the second part is dedicated to every other character learning about the Time Lords coming back and going "This is bigger than The Master and this is bigger than Earth.". They overshadow every single consequence introduced in the previous part and the key scene of the episode is a Time Lord stand-off. Additionally, the Time Lords' exit from the story also marks the end of every single form of conflict in the episode. From the very first moment to when all conflict is resolved, the Time Lords dominate the plot, which makes them not only feel significant in the grant scheme, but actually does make them the most important piece of the story. Heaven Sent ends with the same Gallifrey plot twist, however this is where the similarities with The End of Time stop. In Hell Bent, instead of the Time Lords dominating the presentation, it's The Doctor who does this. He is the source of every conflict in the episode and only when he is subdued by the memory wipe is all conflict resolved. While they are present throughout the story until The Doctor runs away again, they do not present a threat to The Doctor. Things are instead reversed with The Doctor breaking all his own rules to take over Gallifrey and get Clara back. Also, the key scene in the stolen Time Capsule contains no Time Lords (The Doctor doesn't count as a Time Lord in presentation because he is a different sort of man). Instead, the key scene consists of the revelation of Clara's inevitable demise and a stand-off between her and The Doctor to see who the memory wipe was used on. The Time Lords by this point have been entire removed from the conflict. As a result of their lack of dominance over the presentation, I feel that their presence is undermined somewhat. This and the repeated removal from the conflict by the narration scenes at the diner that completely removes all tension from the previous scene. I don't dislike Heaven Sent/Hell Bent, in fact I think it was the perfect way for The Doctor to arrive back on Gallifrey: mourning and ready to light a fire underneath his own people. I just feel that the episode wasn't perfect, and that the above is the reason. I want to see the Cloister Wraiths come back with a bit more bite. :)
@markc40089 жыл бұрын
Alexander Nisbet TBH somewhere like Coal Hill - somewhere bleak and dreary - would be even more jarring! The diner gives us a lot of colour depth and good cinematography. Somewhere like Coal Hill would make it infinitely more complicated. The point of the diner, the point of Clara being there, making us believe her to have had her memory completely wiped and living a new life, trumps any personal preference, because it's part of the storytelling and structure. As for the Time Lords/Gallifrey, again it comes down to personal preference. The story was never ABOUT them. The End of Time (which honestly I despise for the fact RTD didn't actually have the balls to bring them back) was ABOUT the Time Lords. This story was always about the Doctor and Clara. Why would it focus on something that's just a vessel to tell the story? Honestly it does just seem like personal preference. The issues you have with it - if removed in the case of the cutaway scenes or expanded in the case of Gallifrey - would change entirely the tone and subject of the episode completely.
@AluxDoesNotStream9 жыл бұрын
***** I really don't see what about the 1950s American diner setting specifically tells the audience that Clara has lost her memory. In fact at first, the entire setup made me think that the two of them had decided to remain separated from each other. That's what making Clara an integral component of such a radically unfamiliar setting did. The setting of Coat Hill wouldn't be boring the audience because of the cliffhanger we were left with. Look back at The Caretaker and you'll see that they did a very good job of making Coat Hill look colourful and interesting with all the flags on string hanging from the ceiling and set pieces like the giant chess board. The point of the diner wasn't really to suggest that Clara's life is different because that's immediately obvious the moment The Doctor walks inside. The point is more to convey that Clara is alive and living without The Doctor. I will admit that the concern about the use of the Time Lords is mostly down to my personal preference. But after The Day of the Doctor, the hunt for Gallifrey was being portrayed as The Doctor's entire driving force. It made me expect that The Doctor would be spending multiple regenerations trying to find Gallifrey. So when he just ended up there at the end of Heaven Sent, the moment felt very limp. "Oh. He found it." was my reaction, when it should have been "Oh my god, it's Gallifrey! Woah! WOAH!". You are very correct that the point of Heaven Sent/Hell Bent was to focus intimately on The Doctor and Clara's close relationship, and what The Doctor would be willing to do to get her back. Which is why I think that the return of Gallifrey and the use of the Time Lords could easily have been saved for a later point, where they can become the focus of a story. To see the entire 50th Anniversary setup culminate in a single plot twist and become an unfocused element of a companion exit is extremely disappointing. I understand that my preferences would have changed the tone of the episode, but the tone is what I thought was wrong. It didn't feel like I was watching a finale, it felt like I was watching a heavy season opener or one of the Christmas specials that is as far removed from the concept of Christmas as possible (The Time of the Doctor). I don't disagree with the subject, I just disagree with the use of Gallifrey to float it on.

+Danny O'Gara Actually, for me original ending averted Clara's deat and put him in path of having wacky adventures with Me (IMO one of the worst characters ever in nu who), taking the long way back. And off topic, IMO one of the largest failure of Moffat is his love for his characters and inability to let them die except for old age (Amy & Rory). (River Song was nearest to actually dying, but even she managed to kind of avoid it). I don't want GRR Martin typed carnage, but undermining character deaths is kind of banal. (Death can have huge dramatic impact in drama when used correctly, and IMO in revived Who it hasn't been ever used correctly.) Everything I said is IMO, and I claim nothing of it being any kind of truth.

as the diner dematerialized, it all became clear. i believe the Doctor's memory was restored the moment he entered his own Tardis. he was at peace knowing Clara was alive and his plan successful. he was no longer 'hell bent' and free to move on💖

I like the sentiment of wanting to tidy up the ending so it doesn't mess with Face the Raven, as I'm not a fan of the episode's over-the-top ending for Clara, and your editing is so clean that I didn't even realize what was being cut until the video was over. But, I have to ask, how does this improve things? At least in the official ending we know that she eventually went back to Gallifrey. In this cut, we're left with no idea where she went or what's going to happen to her. This ending leaves an even bigger loose end for her storyline than the official one.
@caulifloodle9 жыл бұрын
That said, I guess any ending without a huge 1950s-diner-TARDIS flying through space because its chameleon circuit broke for literally no reason has to be some kind of an improvement.

***** "Properly," isn't even in the original quote. I checked. Ashildr also said it MIGHT be stuck. If The Doctor was able to fix the chameleon circuit temporarily in Attack of The Cybermen, why couldn't Ashildr? Why else would she be consulting the TARDIS manual? As Dustin says they haven't quite worked it out yet. Clara's awesome was more of an okiedokie. She doesn't want to deal with it.

Clara was one of my favourite companions but I had a big issue with her coming back and here’s why: she wanted to be the doctor or become like the doctor and we see this grow over her seasons. This is why her death is so great because it shows that you can be like the doctor but it comes with consequences (like it did for Donna) and when she came back, it made all that character development and her sacrifice for nothing. I loved Clara but I wish they allowed the character to stay dead. Her death was so fitting and there was nothing wrong with it. But that’s just my opinion...

Personally, I think the whole episode undid Face the Raven. Although it was a very emotional episode, I felt like it did Clara justice. I was angry when the Ponds died (or got trapped in the past) not just because they were gone but also because the Doctor seemed to hardly be affected by it at all. Clara just swooped in and took their place as if they had never even been there. But this time, we got to see 12's rage and emotions, something that continued into the next episode a bit. I'm glad Moffat fixed his mistake this time. ...But then he fixed it too far. The last episode was pointless. For starters, returning to Gallifrey and the subject of the Hybrid both had huge potential, but were simply glanced by. Secondly, if we've already cried over Clara and coped with her loss, please don't bring her back only to pull her away again. Geez, now I know how she felt when she lost Danny. It's cruel to give false hope and then cut it in the bud thirty minutes later.
@UnchainedEruption8 жыл бұрын
Finally, it undid the events from Face the Raven, which did a much better job anyway at saying goodbye to Clara. This finale felt very out-of-place with an otherwise perfect season.
@mayotango13178 жыл бұрын
+Karl Hiramanek I saw the episode and Capaldi's performance seems false or winless effort, while Matt cried and exile in a cloud.
@UnchainedEruption8 жыл бұрын
Mayo Tango131 Yeah. And that was it. He sort of teared up for like a minute while Amy read her last words and then never mentions the Ponds again until Hell Bent (ironically.) He even treated River like a stranger in the Name of the Doctor. That was like the last straw for me. This time, we saw the rage of the Doctor and just how far he was willing to go for the companions he loves. And then they continue on that in Heaven Sent, and we see how he can't operate or think without her. So he pretends that he's still with her in the Tardis. We see it take him literally billions of years to move on.
@mayotango13178 жыл бұрын
Karl Hiramanek That's why I dislike Capaldi, is mentally damaged, an emotional cripple. The Eleventh Doctor is more independent and mature, as the Fourth or Seventh Doctors. People to see, places to visit. Remember that River was a ghost in that episode, and the Doctor hurt him see her like this. Hell Bent could be a great episode for the return of the Time Lords, but ended up being another Clara-Who episode.
@UnchainedEruption8 жыл бұрын
Mayo Tango131 I agree it wasn't a good episode. I'm talking about Heaven Sent and Face the Raven. Those were masterpieces. As for 11, he was just as emotional. He raised an entire army to rescue Amy. It's just that Moffat's writing was poor during Season 7, so the characters did things out of character- like Amy and Rory divorcing. It makes no sense and was a pointless subplot. The Doctor gave so much importance to the Ponds, especially in the episode before (the power of three), and then the episode after he was completely heartless. It was just inconsistent.

I wonder where Clara went off to, because for Series 10, the new companion actress is Pearl Mackie.
@musicOrator8 жыл бұрын
The biggest problem I have with Moffat's ending is that Clara is essentially, and knowingly, risking reality/the universe/time. Yeah, sure, as long as she eventually gets back to Gallifrey safe and sound, the universe will be fine, but the more she travels en route, the more likely it is that she'll accidentally die before she even gets back, making it impossible to fulfill her fixed-point death on Trap Street. It's one thing for Clara to throw caution overboard when it's only her life at stake - we know she's comfortable with that. It's another thing entirely for her to so heavily risk the entire universe's well-being, and honestly I don't think she would. I understand why Moffat wrote it this way - so that viewers could have a "happy" ending for her and to complete the arc of her becoming the Doctor's equal - and perhaps to allow Jenna Coleman to be there for Peter Capaldi's final episode. But for Clara to cling to such a dangerous and long semi-resurrection really undermines her character and her gorgeous goodbye on Trap Street.

I like the ending one she's immortal so at some point she will go back but right now she wants to have fun go to all the worlds out there and see what else has she not seen still a vary sad ending in face the raven because we know it will happen or has happened time travel lol just like river song we knew some how she had to get the screwdriver and on there last day together makes sense
@theoutcastboi7 жыл бұрын
Face the Raven's death does happen, true, but it is devalued by the dumb immortal with a TARDIS ending. Clara can now potentially live long than the average human which renders the original tragic natural of her death meaningless, because the tragedy comes from the fact her life was cut short. Now she gets a full life plus her own TARDIS. It is utter ________ and renders the entire death useless. This is why I and other people are rightly annoyed with Clara's fate. She dies in an inescapable situation, but then, somewhat inevitably, she is pratically resurrected and ends up with a far better deal than most NuWho companions.
@Saladfork19296 жыл бұрын
@@theoutcastboi i like this ending but i had a better idea for trap street death. She does it all... but she gives the doctor her souffle recipe and says to start baking them.

renji90998 basically the tardis has something called a chameleon circuit which disguises the tardis as something relevant to that particular location /time and when the doctor went to 1960 or something like that where there was police boxes around the chameleon circuit broke and left the tardis stuck as a police box the doctor has said he could always fix it but he doesn't want to
