The Doctor did it on purpose. He didn't tell Rose that he loved her, because he wanted her to be mad at him, which eventually led her to choose his clone. He wanted her to be happy, even if that means that he'll suffer.

Every time I watch this it really makes me cry. My interpretation of the whole thing is that: I've seen people saying this isn't a good scene as the real 10th doctor leaves quickly without saying anything. However, if you look back...Once the metacrisis doctor kisses rose the look on the Doctor's face is one of pure devastation because he knows that Rose has now got her happiness in a form of him, However, the Doctor can never have his true happiness in the form of Rose. He also replies with "does it need saying" when Rose asks what he was going to tell her. Rose looks at him seeming disappointed in his answer but the truth is the doctor knows he cannot tell her he loves her, and must leave this up to the metacrisis doctor to do, in order to get Rose to love the metacrisis doctor in the same way. Although he wishes it could have been him that finally got to say the words he was longing to say from that day. Also the reason the doctor speaks to the metacrisis Doctor with such bitter and disgust, not because of what he did to the Daleks. But because he gets to live the life the Doctor can only dream of. 'One adventure he can never have...the stuff of legend' Such a beautiful and powerful scene.

And if he says "i love you" to Rose, well there is no way he will leave. That's always why he held back because he was this close to allowing that utter devastation and heartbreak through loving her through her life span and then never being able to be with her again because she's dead. (at one point RTD wrote this ending as the doctor going off to be with her for the rest of her life) But you could always see just how on the knife edge the doctor was with Rose, how close he was to giving in no matter what. That interplay was so fascinating because it's honestly so very human, and 10 felt things that we hadn't seen in a timelord before - actually fearing his death and feeling like it would be his end even though he's a timelord that regenerates. We see that temptation with him exploring romantic love and the fears and insecurities that go with it. 9/10 couldn't control their love for Rose but they could control their actions. This is them controlling their actions. The clone has to say the words. The metacrisis is 10 with 9's trauma (best of both of the men she fell in love with). 9 was so attached and needy and she brought him joy and healing. 10 regenerates from that love and attachment and is so effected by his feelings, that she imprints on him and he sorta adapts to be more for her. All the doctors change drastically each time but what didn't change was the exact way 9 felt for her. It remained the same and only got more intense with 10. RTD wrote prolonged grief into the show which just never happened ever. We actually see just how much grief the doctor is in, how she effects him, how he still loves her and how haunted he is right up until she returns with this 'closure' type of end. That's what's so fascinating about their relationship. The intricate psychological details and subtleties and what it's like to be in love with someone who you know you can never have. You move forward but the feelings linger and RTD actually showed that. No one could bring that exploration of humanity like RTD could. No one has since. But yeah, metacrisis had to say it because if he didn't it would never be over. Metacrisis says it, and just think of metacrisis for a minute too. Metacrisis is as much in love with her here too, and he knows he could be rejected but still lays it all out on the line asking her to be with him. He could go gallivanting off exploring but he just wants to be with her. A life that they can have together with everything that entails. You can see just how devastated 10 is to the kiss that follows because he knows there's something that he'll never have with her, and he fucking bolts out of there because he can't bear it anymore. He let her go for a real adventure but he has to live with the fact that she's now living the adventure that he actually wants but can never have. RTD was very clever with including little comments about 9 & 10 talking about humans, eating chips, getting to know and love each other and just regular mundane things, the one adventure he can never have, and we see several times him pine and wistfully think of maybe having it. RTD not only brought the relationship between 10 and Rose full circle but he brought the doctor full circle and closed out his era through his connection to Rose. We see how closely connected 9 & 10 are, and we never really see it again. The psychology in the writing just hasn't been replicated. It's interesting that 10 is looking at a duplicate of himself that he's disgusted at for committing genocide (hypocrite) but he also resents for being the perfect version for Rose. He knows he's a loose canon but he also knows just how well loving and being with Rose can heal him, because as he says she's done it before, for him. And throughout that he gives up his own happiness for both of them. She can have him but he can't have her. That's love no matter what, when you put your beloved needs ahead of your own no matter the cost. And this costs him greatly because she's now the one he can never have, and it's why it's so bittersweet when he visits her just before he regenerates because you see that for 10 he could never really let her go, and he still loved her just as much. Honestly the Rose/Doctor love story was beautiful, bittersweet and very sad.

This is how I always saw this scene: The doctor who loves Rose unconditionally and she loves him unconditionally. He knew he would outlive her, would someday have to travel on so he couldn't bring himself to say the words. Because he was trying to give her the gift of someone who could spend his life with her. Someone who would love her as much as he did, who would look out and protect her like he would. A version of himself who could say the words without preamble. I feel ten gave up rose not because he wanted to, but because he had to. The Doctor saw how heartbroken she was during his half-regeneration, and didn't want her to go through that again. Even if she did manage to fall in love with Matt Smith's Doctor, there was no guarantee that Smith would feel the same way about her as Tennant's doctor did, because regeneration not only changes their physical appearance., it also changes their personality. look at the way Smith's doctor cared about Clara compared to the way Capaldi's doctor cares about her, and it's completely different. Matt would have cared about Rose, but not the same way that Tennant's doctor (or even Eccleston's doctor for that matter) did. He never gave her up because he didn't love her, he gave her up because he did, and wanted her to be happy.
@elizabethjohnston96068 жыл бұрын
+Uber Bullshit Detector I think since the Doctor is the same even though he regenerates, he would still love Rose, but you are right, he knew he had to give her up. He never forgot her (there are a couple of instances where he remembers her in the Matt Smith era like The Lodger when he headbutts Craig and several of his past incarnation's faces appear and so does Rose's, in Let's Kill Hitler she appears as the voice interface after he says "give me someone I like" and in the Christmas special when he is asked if you could spend one last day with your beloved and he looks very sad, and this was before he really knew much about River Song so you can only assume he is thinking about Rose) but he wanted her to have a happy life so he made the sacrifice.

+Elizabeth Johnston Nope, the doctor's personality also changes with every regeneration, Plus remember 11 is the doctor who forgets

+Brutally Honest Then explain how the 12th Doctor still feels the same way about River in The Husbands of River Song when he in fact had a relationship with her as the 11th. Also explain how 9's feelings towards Rose were the same when he became 10. Just because he had a different personality and body doesn't mean his feelings change. Also look at his friendship with Clara. And the reason he is the Doctor Who Forgets is because he is purposely blocking his feelings because it's too painful. He doesn't ever REALLY forget.

The reason why we see 11 move on so quickly was perfectly described by 10 himself in his final episode, "...some new man goes sauntering away," how with every regeneration, the new man/woman the Doctor becomes has his/her own set of personality traits, desires, and interests, but encompasses the memories and intelligence of the Doctor. I can't help but believe that every Doctor is truly their own being with distinct desires, compressed into this enigma of one being with the title "the Doctor" and memories passed down. The 9th incarnation fell in love with Rose organically, through witnessing her humanity and compassion, and the 10th incarnation as many people say, imprinted on Rose, and regenerated to mirror her desires (regenerating into a body she would find attractive, encompassing human traits). I found this evident when the 10th doctor started to regenerate in Journey's End and channeled his regeneration energy into his hand, instead of simply accepting that his body will change. We hear Rose tell him "Not like this" in regards to his potential regeneration, and after channeling his energy into his hand, the Doctor says, "I didn't want to (change), look at me"... and right after he asks only Rose for her opinion on him remaining the same, "What do you think?"" I want to say that he didn't want to change the way he looked because he was in love with Rose and he was insecure as to how she would react if he changed into a whole new person. I understand the Meta-Crisis Doctor has the same memories and thoughts, but it makes me wonder if he has new desires and traits. Well we know he is part human, specifically Donna, but just how the 10th Doctor imprinted on Rose during his first regeneration, I wonder if he imprinted on Rose again, while evolving into the Meta-Crises Doctor. I could only imagine how heartbreaking it must have been for the 10th Doctor to leave Rose on the beach again, with a clone of him who could freely express how he feels and kiss the woman he loves. What I am trying to say is that only the 9th and 10th Doctors loved Rose, and the Doctor as a whole probably didn't, again because I'm going with the theory that Doctor incarnations are separate entities squished into one, and have the title "The Doctor" and memories passed down. We never see the 11th Doctor brooding or reminiscing about Rose as much, and he moves on fairly quickly, because he has a new set of desires and interests which allows him to fall in love with River. We never really hear him mention Sarah Jane as well to his later companions, because with every regeneration, the Doctor truly is a new person and probably doesn't care, unless the companion is by his side at the time of regeneration.
@alphamineron3 жыл бұрын
No everyone gets it wrong, the more intriguing perspective is that we can’t understand because we are just humans. What regeneration feels like to 10 doesn’t mean what it is. 11th appeared in Sarah Jane’s Adventures and talked how he doesn’t look back because he can’t. Regeneration is more of a curse for the Doctor, it’s not that he is different because regeneration changes him but the other way around. He moves on so that he can carry on.

one thing i just thought of as i rewatch this clip, this must've been an emotional rollercoaster for the metacrisis doctor, he gets to be with the woman he loves but also sees the tardis leave one last time, knowing in his mind that he'll never hear the noise of the tardis flying away again must've been hard for him to hear, considering him having all his memories from his entire life, it must've felt like one door/universe closes and another life opens

He truly loves Rose with both his hearts. He could've been selfish and could've just brought her along knowing well it would break both him and herself inevitably. He could've offered to travel with Rose like he did with past companions . He very obviously wanted Rose back as evidenced throughout seasons 3 and 4 but he let her go. Also I feel that the reason he brought her back to the parallel universe instead of giving her the option of atleast going back to her own universe where they could atleast maintain some form of contact , was because it would be too tempting for him to just run back to Rose. The thought of watching her pass , age or even share another life with someone eles would've been too painful for him to witness. Even Tenant mentions this in an interview 'that by gifting Rose this new doctor he's not reallowing himself to go back' because he wants Rose to be happy. Damn ...broken.

In Russell T. Davies book about his time as the Doctor Who showrunner, he says fans can think of it as cannon if they want to, because that's how he likes to think of them - the Doctor and Rose in the Tardis, on adventures in the parallel world. Who knows, at some point in the future - hopefully long after Moffat is gone - their characters might be reintroduced for an episode. God, it would be amazing to see the latest incarnation of the Doctor (maybe 14th or 15th by then) meeting the 10th and Rose... and maybe their children? For a one off adventure with Torchwood perhaps.

Though bittersweet, the doctor knew that it was better for Rose to be with Metacrisis doctor, as he has the same lifespan of a human, which is one of the reasons why he left her with him, so that she can live her life with him in a way as she always wanted, which is also why I am happy that she did, so that way we can see her and Metacrisis doctor again at some point, which I do hope they bring her back this year along with Metacrisis doctor as I want to know what their lives are like now and it would be very funny to see her reaction when she finds out that the doctor changed into the same face again a third time.

When you think about it, this is also great character development for Ten too as he's already lost Rose once. He knows this time he will have to let go, he's prepared for it and when he knows she'll be taken care of by the metacrisis doctor it's all he needs to move on. He leaves without shedding a tear and what actually hurts him properly this time is what happens to Donna afterwards.

This scene is tragic, but it all worked out in the end. Rose got a perfect version of her Doctor that will live as long as her, never change, and can afford to spend his life on one planet. Metacrisis, with all of 10's thoughts and memories, got to spend his life with the woman he truly loved. And while our Doctor couldn't have Rose, he ended up with River Song, whose lifestyle was more compatible with the Doctor's anyway.

He has to give up. He knows he has to and it’s awful. The other doctor is just as much the doctor as the original, he is a regeneration, one of his lives, as valid as any other, but 1/3 of it. I perfect, angry and mortal. He doesn’t say it. He remains detached and gives her to him. It’s painful to watch him lose everything from this point onwards. He loses Rose, then Donna, then his penultimate life.

I'm really starting to think that the whole "The Doctor is part human" plot from the 1996 movie was unintentional foreshadowing. Now we have a chance to retcon by canonisation! Think of it from a Timey Wimey POV. Both The Master and The Doctor were linked together for a brief sequence connected through through The Eye of Harmony when The Master infiltrated The TARDIS with Chang Lee. Seeing all of time and reality with a gateway built within The Tardis. Meaning if fate, destiny, and foreshadowing are all intentional and they all unravel within the Whoniverse as planned, the not-so-well received retcon of "I'm part human, on my mothers side", mixed with a newly regenerated and hyper-minded and deluded 8th Doctor, having a slice of foresight beamed into his head see will make this throw away line, easy to fix. It was The Doctor Donna. Imagine it. 8, being the Doctor to essentially enter the first era and stage of The Time War, gets a throwaway "part human" line which links with the 10th Doctor, The Doctor to essentially be within the last stage and final act of The Time War. Not to mention, RTD had previously retconned the "part human" origins. RTD being the one to bring back the show, introduce The Time War, which subsequently ushered in the 8th Doctor within this new era to bridge the gap along with the 9th Doctor (before The War Doctor was made). This technically means the Doctor's temporary belief that he was indeed "half human" was a foresight into The Meta-crisis Doctor. For a briefe moment in Time, the split soul that would later merge with Donna spoke on his behalf stating "I'm half human, on my mothers side" was actually hinting at Donna Nobel, THIS ENTIRE TIME. Technically by default, The Meta-crisis Doctor and Donna were the 2 to have bonded to produce this almost carbon copy of the Doctor with only one heart, making Donna a "Mother" figure, and The Doctor, a "father" figure towards his half and half creation. He was born in blood, anger and revenge, all correlating towards Gallifrey, The Daleks and a post-time war reality. IT'S ALL SOMEWHAT LINKED. And while yes this theory is a stretch, and could be explained so much better, it's hopefully one knot loose, making Doctor Who just a tiny bit cleaner from its wibbly wobbly timey wimey timeline. (I already got PLENTY of theories to cover up and fix The Timeless Child, so we good in advance).

The existence of the War Doctor gives this scene such an interesting new light.
