I started acquiring them way too late into the game, so I was basically forced to go for Standard because of the price. In many ways, I do actually prefer the simple Standard design, sleek, and uniform. And the Bluray band across the top doesn't ruin it for me (and for S19, it kinda helps with the blue aesthetic). My only quarrel is the booklet, the condensed booklet really annoys me, so I hope I'll be able to get my hands on them in some other ways.

Yes the more detailed booklet for Season 12 and 10 are very good and I do enjoy reading them. I have more in standard edition than limited edition versions.

I considered moving to the standard editions but in my opinion, the booklet is a game-changer for me, it is important as "behind the sofa". I love reading it before starting a season to get the vibe. In fact in most seasons the booklet is used more than the CDs.

I started out buying the DVDs, because I wanted to have a physical copy of every Doctor Who story and I enjoyed the special features that came with it (mainly the commentaries and 'making of' documentaries). I then saw the Blu-Ray releases. While the additional special features appealed to me, I had only seen them going for really high amounts on eBay and Amazon which was a game I did not want to get involved with. Also, I wasn't prepared to pay £100+ for something I could get on DVD for cheaper and had similar content in my mind. More recently I completed my DVD collection (along with the animated reconstructions), and the Blu-Ray releases piqued my interest again. I realised there were 2 different versions of 'The Collection', with the Standard Editions being available in HMV where I shop and not being marked up to crazy prices by scalpers online. I decided to buy the Standard Editions purely from a cost perspective, but I am happy with how they look and how little space they take up on my shelf, and I prefer how the case feels more robust/safe. I also LOVE the special features exclusive to 'The Collection', and it really does feel like the definitive collection of content for fans of the show. The only downside is the booklet in my opinion, which I feel could have at least had the same series overview. But my main reason for buying is the content, and it takes up a lot less space than the 150+ DVDs on my shelf (which I will sell on even if they are worth pennies now).

Limited edition sets need to start adding in posters and art cards as theirs not enough content to justify a limited range. But saying that much prefer the way and feel of the limited sets

When Season 12 hit Australia - the packaging was identical to the UK limited set (the rating logo was different on the J card ) . This was when BBC distributed via Roadshow . But when 19 was issued , the box was a 5 sided slipcase and not quite as impressive as the UK packaging

Standard Edition for me as it's slimmer and Carbon Neutral.

Is anyone as brave as me to have a mix of the two? I only decided to start collecting these sets when the standard sets were first released, only having Season 19 in Limited Edition form. I now have several seasons in standard release packaging and 19 and 24 in Limited Edition packaging and plan to keep collecting the ongoing Limited Edition sets alongside the standard sets of pre-released seasons. I'm not that finickity when it comes to how things look on my shelf so I'm happy to have the best of both worlds.

I'm slowly converting from my dvds to standard editions to save space but allowing myself to get limited editions for my top 3 seasons to have the chunkier box with a bigger booklet etc. - Best of both worlds as you say!

I really like the slipcase versions of the limited edition packaging (I have Season 24 in this style). If they changed the way the discs were held in the packaging they would be my preferred choice. I do like the standard edition cases as well (I Got Season 12, 18 & 19 in that style) and if the booklet wasn't cut down I would be happy to own those.

Normally, I would have been practical about buying these sets and come down on the side of Miles... But I recently drew some cash down from one of my pensions and splurged on the Limited Editions - so kind of committed now. On another note, nice to see a mention of grotsits in the blurb above, in light of the recent sad passing of Tony Selby - R.I.P Sabalom Glitz. :'(

Both of them have advantages. Shelf space and cost on the standard edition, and of course it being available whenever you get into the classic series. Personally, I jumped on Season 12 when it was announced (mainly because I was sure it would rocket in price if the series was popular, which it was) and I just love the presence the series has on the shelf. It's still blu ray and much more condensed than the DVDs, and then the DVDs had the issue of not all being released individually and in specific sets with other things. I suppose the look of the set on the shelf, which is how I'll enjoy it most of the time is important to me, same as the additional content and booklet. Edit: Another point as to why I collect steelbooks of my favourite movies is so I don't have to have the ugly BBFC logos on my products, but I use protectors to keep everything safe from damage
@SciFiBrony2 жыл бұрын
As someone in the US I don't really have the issue of choosing since I don't have the choices, but I got to say, I think I prefer the standard releases for the Collection line, considering the availability. From what I hear from other fans, the Limited Edition versions have been not only hard to find, but most, if not all of them, have been bought out to be resold with a markup. That reason alone would lead me to go for the standard range, even if the limited editions were available over here. Now for the animations, they've never been made available for blu-ray over here (except for Galaxy 4 and Shada via it's inclusion in The Collection release) and so I import them and always get the steelbook when I can. The artwork is just GORGEOUS. But if the steelbooks were out of my reach (due to availability or cost), I would be perfectly fine with the standard releases.

I wasn't sure what to make of this video when it was suggested to me. I ended up really loving it. I am mostly all in on the limited editions, although a friend of mine and I had have the same discussion, we enjoy the size and simplicity of the standard edition, too. Had those been available from the start, we might have opted for those. Here's my story. First off, I'm in the US. When they did Series 12, I opted for the US version. Mostly because I lived here, and it was available at the same time, so I thought "Oh, OK, I'll go with this". Now I never cared for the "Tom Baker Season One" crap, I wanted it to say "Series 12". That always stuck in my craw. But anyway, I got the second one, which was I think 19 or 18 - I forget which order right now. Then we get to the fourth - which I think was Season 10, and that's when they introduced a difference of release dates between the US & UK releases - they were several months behind the UK version. I was impatient and didn't want to wait, so I imported the UK version. When I got it, I was like "Well crap, I should have been getting these from the start". From there, I started buying all the limited editions, and have all of those. I did end up picking up one of the reprints of Season 12 Limited Edition when they did that to bring that one in line with the rest of the collection. Then they announced the standard editions, which from my perspective on the US side was basically the "US version" in the UK packaging, and with the proper "Season 12, 18, 19, etc" stuff instead of the horrid "Tom Baker Season Seven" nonsense. So I ended up picking up standard editions of Season 18 & 19. I then sold off my US copies of "Tom Baker Seasons One & Seven", as well as "Peter Davison Season One" - so that nonsense is purged from the collection completely. It now leaves me with LE versions of 8, 10, 12, 14, 23, 24, & 26. Plus standard editions of 18 & 19. As I said earlier, if they had the standard editions from the start, I might have opted for those totally. I get the logic of the bloke in this video who campaigned for them. However, since I have 7 of the 9 seasons released as limited editions, I'll go with them, and if they EVER reprint 18 & 19 in LE, I might get them (although I honestly have no belief that they will).

For me its the sheer wait from limited to standard edition. If being done in the same order as the limited editions we should be getting season 17 next. There are no copies on Amazon and we are still waiting. I cannot bare having to wait 18 months for a standard packaging re-release, it just isn't right. Both versions have been available for plenty of time now, release them both together, those who have bought limited I'm sure will continue with that and the same with standard packaging. At this rate it will probably be 2025 before we get season 2 in standard packagaing. A very stupid decision by those involved. I really wish I knew how to get hold of Russell Minton, evecutive producer of the range.
