PS the new effects for Destiny have been fixed for the Blu-ray release. The above ground explosions which were errornously updated to have laser blasts striking the ground have been removed.

These new effects are very subtle & light. I mean, the new spaceship CGI really doesn’t stick out or feel distracting here! Thumbs from me for this one 👍

Absolutely excellent; they did a great job maintaining the "feel" of the original while improving the effects to better tell the story! This has always been my absolute favorite Doctor Who serial.

I feel like someone’s been watching CunningMunki videos because these were much like his, all period correct looking, using as much of the original material as possible, no jarringly obvious CGI, just the same original shots but nicely cleaned up and polished a bit. Nice.

Good improvements, nothing too drastic, just clean ups really. The ships crashing looks much clearer now.

I don't think the effects were in desperate need of an update, but I really think they polished it up and the way they kept a lot of shots and models the same or very similar helps a lot. This is a really great update imo

Really like these new effects. Don't suppose you'd be able to showcase the difference between the 2017 and 2021 Shada releases? I'm interested as to what the 'enhanced animation' refers to.

As faithful as some of these new effects are, I really prefer the originals. There is something about the use of practical effects and analogue composites that makes it feel more genuine. That being said, the "restoration" and re-release of stories is exposing classic who to new audiences and that is always a good thing. Thank you for this comparison.

One thing I like about these CGI replacements (on both DVD and Blu-Ray) is that the BBC made them optional, unlike what George Lucas did with Star Wars.

This was perhaps one story that didn’t really need the effects doing as the original ones were actually pretty ok as for The Horns of Nimon though…

Always enjoy these videos. Apart from the shuttle craft coming and going - this is one where I can't see why they bothered. Yes, it's tidies things up but they weren't atrociously bad anyway.
@meiray2 жыл бұрын
The VFX teams would have always preferred to film model shots traditionally, not on video with CSO. I think all the episodes that resorted to CSO space sequences are deserving of a do-over (Nimon didn’t in this case). I would also say that giving the space shots a once over helps the drama here - the set up for the crash and the actual accident is clear as a bell now, visually. Now, The Invisible Enemy is one where I think they should have left the space shots alone.

I guess there was never any fixing how Della gets shot in the chest but grabs her stomach!
@emperordalek2 жыл бұрын
I notice Della is still clutching her stomach when she's shot in the face... I was kinda hoping they'd fix that bit, but I guess you have to leave some of the narminess in the original, right?

New version is better with lovely FX shots in space and those bright laser bolts.

On the one hand, the 'warp' effect is more Star Trek than I'd like but - on the other - it's up against model footage that has *not aged well at ALL* xD Further, the laser effects are a big improvement - the planet actually *looks like a planet* - the 'bug' escaping from Eden actually does a lot better job foreshadowing the fact that the one-way viewer *isn't actually a one way viewer* - the ship separation looks *amazing* - and I love that little shuttle flying back and forth On the whole, I'll take what I can get and like it :P

@@FreeTheDonbas mate you have some odd demons if you think that these CGI improvements are sacrilegious. They are for the most part way better than the original offerings, allowing people to experience the stories in a new way, done with the same care and attention as the originals. It’s one of the many reasons that home media will continue to stick around as you can’t get this sort of thing via streaming, it’s always going to be superior.
@DanTheMan2150AD2 жыл бұрын
@@FreeTheDonbas they haven’t fucked up any audio for Resurrection of the Daleks, there’s too many improvements to list that are way better but I’ll gladly point you to Revelation of the Daleks' effects for one of the best. Cause I hate to rain on your weird parade but those effects involved using an actual model Dalek as opposed to the paper cut out the original used. It's not insulting as they full respect the original creators who even themselves admit the original effects are terrible. So no, it’s not driving up prices of anything nor is it cheap or tacky. Home Media is far from dead given that streaming has barely implemented anything decent aside from needing a spreadsheet to work out what you can watch on where, Blu-rays and DVDs are still going strong, might wanna check the best selling lists on places like Amazon the moment one of the Doctor Who animations or Collection sets drop… Also, yes you can get one of them on streaming, Day of the Daleks the vastly improved special edition is the only version you can get via streaming. The original is pretty much buried given how awful the original voices were.

The moment in which Romana gets stung is odd in the updated version, albeit a very little bit. In the original version, the creature is right on her neck, then follows her reaction, which makes sense. But in the new version, it appears that she got stung a split second before that creature had the opportunity to do so. But still, the new version looks better, it is more credible to have a mosquito-thing coming form a jungle than a light entity.
