As other people have mentioned, this episode led to Sarah Jane Smith getting her own spin-off show which ran for five seasons. Its aimed at a slightly younger audience than Doctor Who, but some of the stories are so good that it makes the series worth watching. Particularly the adventures featuring the villain - the Trickster. And two of the stories feature big guest appearences by David Tennant and Matt Smith as the Doctor. These aren't just cameos!

There can never be enough Sarah-Jane and I cry every time I see her, I miss her so much, she was the perfect companion and so much more. Before there was a female doctor there was this strong female character who stood up to what the universe threw at her and was a world renowned journalist and feminist, god she was a great role model and inspiration.

Sarah Jane was also with Pertwee -- she's one of the "every other" companions. By that, I mean it's a pattern that some people claim, but it doesn't hold up well under scrutiny. The idea is that every other regeneration he's with a companion, and then he isn't. New Who it holds up, but 8.5/earlier it's not even a thing really. But that's how SJ knows about regeneration, as THE companion she was there for going from 3 to 4. Just like Rose and Clara with their respective DoctorS. Sad thing about SJ is how inconsistent the writing was for her. They alternated between her being a strong female character, and being the "helpless woman" trope. First two-parter she's in she's a smarmy smart brow-beating badass telling a Sontaran to go stuff his potato head in a peeler -- Two episodes later she's flailing her arms around tripping and looking back whilst running through a forest like "the girl who dies first" in a slasher flic. Admittedly, the same can be said of Clara, or 13 for that matter. Inconsistent writing over who the character even is can get really painful at times. But it's also why it's "so good" when it's "so bad" -- or as you said, "so real". When it's well written, DAMN is it well written. You really start to care about the characters as people -- and this only gets deeper and deeper as you move into the Moffat era. By the time of the end of Season 7, you'll be bawling your eyes out. Oh who are we kidding, you won't even get 4 episodes into season 7 without emptying a box of tissues. I just wish the Doctor would realize that regenerating whilst the Tardis is in flight is a bad idea.

I met Elisabeth Sladen way back in April 2010 when I was an extra on The Sarah Jane Adventures for the second time. I even showed her how to use the coffee machine on one of the crew tables outside. She was lovely and down to earth without a shred of arrogance or self-importance. Her death came as a massive shock to me, both because it was so soon after her diagnosis and because it was only a year after I met her. She really was, and still is, a legend!
@lbd-po7cl5 жыл бұрын
As someone who grew up watching Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane in the 1970s, this was a real treat. One of the longest serving and best loved companions of all time. You really should check out Genesis of the Daleks, with Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor along with SJS and Harry (the three make a great team). It not only gives you a good feel for Sarah Jane at the time, but also the back story of the creation of Daleks - something that may come in handy a little later on. And let’s not forget K9, who lasted longer than most companions in Classic Who, and really was the Doctor’s best friend. Here he is voiced by the same actor as in the 1970s - John Leeson - who has had an enduring association with the show. The relationship between that metal dog and the 4th Doctor is one of the great comic partnerships of the show, and K9/Leeson is another fan favorite. Incidentally, the scene at the end where SJ turns her back on the fading Tardis mirrors her final scene in the Classic series when she left the show.

He has even been in THREE other "Whoniverse" shows! 1.They gave Elizabeth Sladen a chance to play Sarah Jane again with K-9 on her own TV show called "K-9 and Company" after her time with the 4th Doctor. But the pilot was pretty bad so it was just a pilot. 2.After "School Reunion" Sarah Jane and K-9 got their own TV show, "The Sarah Jane Smith Adventures" which lasted 4 1/2 seasons. It only ended because the actress passed away. 3.K-9 got his own show in Australia called K-9 (duh). A great episode. Seeing Sarah Jane again was so brilliant, but it also created an interesting dynamic between her, the Doctor and Rose. Contrary to most people, I like all the Rose and Sarah Jane bickering, primarily because of where it ends up with both characters coming to an understanding and having mutual respect for one another. Many people criticise Rose's character in this episode and oversimplify her behavior and call her all sorts of names that I don't care to repeat. I think you were right that a lot of Rose and Sarah Jane's jealousy is due to them feeling like their experiences with the Doctor aren't unique to them and feeling threatened by another women's presence, But I think there's another dimension to Rose's jealousy that many people don't seem to get. Rose felt insecure, when she found out that Sarah and the Doctor were once as close as she and the Doctor are now and had all of these amazing adventures, yet despite all of that he just dropped her off and moved on and hardly ever mentions her now. Rose fears that's her future because if the Doctor can do that to Sarah, what's stopping him from doing the same to her? The Doctor's justifications about why he leaves his companions make sense, but are also really sad and highlight how tragic the Doctor's existence really is. He promises he won't ever leave Rose, but deep down he knows the day will come, when she's no longer by his side. A really interesting story that I never get tired off.

Oh please. Let us count the ways that the truth is the other way around. 1. More interested in the football match on TV at the pub than his girlfriend's workplace exploding. 2. What was in his emails did he not want her to see? And why would he be so paranoid as to think she'd give a shit what's in his email? Maybe he thought she'd see his emails to Trisha Delaney? 3. Tells Rose to leave a man to die. 4. Makes racist comments towards the Doctor who's worst crime against Mickey (at the time) was showing disdain for his cowering. 5. Propositions Rose for sex in a hotel room while she waits for the TARDIS to fuel up, then AFTER she agrees he admits that he's actually going out with some other girl, and gets angry like the manchild he is when she suddenly doesn't want to sleep with him anymore and rightly points out that he's just trying to make her jealous. 6. Whines like a little baby when shit hits the fan and Rose runs for the TARDIS. "It's always going to be about the Doctor, it's never about ME!" YES, YOU DUMB MOTHERFUCKER! When the Earth is *literally* ripping apart due to alien activity, it IS going to be about finding the Doctor and helping him stop it. Did you think she was just going to stand there with you and gawp like an idiot while the world ends? Fuck OFF. 7. Continuously tries to put a wedge between her and the Doctor, trying to paint the Doctor as a womanizer who's going to leave her the moment another woman comes along. Does it so often that I'm surprised she doesn't turn around and punch him in the face. 8. Insinuates that she's getting fat, that she needs to "lay off the chips". Oh yeah, Mickey, that's just TOTALLY going to make Rose all hot for your junk. Again, fuck off. Now, does this mean I think Rose is flawless? Nah, she fucked up in this situation, too. However, I think what she fucked up with was being weak and letting the relationship drag out when it was clear that he should have been kicked to the curb ages ago. I don't know if she feared being alone, or feared hurting his feelings (and if it's that, she failed spectacularly on that one), but either way she should have grown a harder spine and let him go a while ago. Mickey does improve a lot, but only AFTER he finally accepts that he's not getting back with her.

The last scene of Sarah Jane walking off with K9 is shot identically to her last scene on the show, long, long ago. She got her own show after this, and the Doctors do pop in. Tom Baker is still The Doctor! Big Finish has recorded oodles of new Fourth Doctor stories, some with surprising guests. Wouldn't hurt to do a little watch of one Tom Baker show, would it? GG do OG.

Elisabeth Sladen's death is obliquely referenced when Sarah Jane Smith is revealed to have died in "The End of Time".

Sorry, a bit late to the game here. There's a wonderful tribute to Elizabeth Sladen if you haven't seen it yet: "My Sarah Jane" kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnOsenx4p7Coebc It does contain spoilers for the 11th Doctor.

If you liked Sarah Jane then you should watch the Sarah Jane adventures, it is more of a kids show but there are actually some really great episodes in the 5 series show.

I remember watching this, and wondering how a new fan would see it, not understanding Sarah Jane's significance to the series. Not to mention K9. :) Liz was an amazing lady, and WHO was all the better for her.

Being a Classic Who fan from the 70s I totally adore this episode. Wonderful reaction, though you should just let Paula watch it and work it out without tellng her what's happening in advance, clearing things up as she asks questions is fine. My face is aching from non-stop smiling lol :-)

Yup, you guys really need to start watching some classic Doctor Who. My personal favourites are the 3rd and 4th Doctors (Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker).

Yeah, the Doctor absolutely loved K9. But he did have some hard moments with him. Here he is cursing at K9 (this is actually an outtake from filming a story from 1978 (note the curlers the companion is wearing) ): kzbin.info/www/bejne/p360aItprMaoiLM

Paula, after the new series you should watch both the classic series and the 8th Doctor action figure adventure series. I love them more than the new series. 😉

Ok, I really must be missing something... How did Sarah Jane end up with K9 again if Romana went off into an alternate dimension with K9 at the end of her run? I have to be missing something there...

This is K-9 Mk III, introduced in 1981's K-9 and Company. Offscreen, sometime after her Sarah's departure, the Doctor left Sarah a crated up K-9 back in 1978.Sarah didn't discover the crate and open it until 1981. K-9 Mk KIK then appeared with Sarah outside her flat in the 20th anniversary special, "The Five Doctors."
