We apologize for the delay. Please enjoy this episode now! This was a fluke and does not happen often! Love all of your support, fellow Whovians!
The Doctor and Martha travel back in time to 1913, but something goes awry when The Doctor forgets himself literally and learns what it is to be human as he falls in love with the local school nurse.
Unfortunately, things only get worse when everyone is attacked by a cluster of evil scarecrows and an even eviler "family".
Surprises at every turn for Paula!

@@LabradorIndependent agreed. Season 3 is pretty hit and miss up until Family of Blood which from then on is great except for the final episode of Season 3 which has one of the dumbest solutions ever. This was originally a book in the New Adventures series with the 7th Doctor and my favorite companion Bernice Summerfield. It’s a much darker story believe it or not. There s a blooper reel from this episode where one of the things he tells Martha to not allow him to eat pears. That was in the book and comes up later on in the series as well.

And so begins the marathon of six of some of the greatest episodes of all New Who. This story especially is so great because it shows exactly who the Doctor is at his core - a monster who will curse you for all time should you cross him, the Lonely God. But you only experience that if you don't take him up on his offers of mercy and leave. It's especially heartbreaking because John and so many other people in the village have to die because the Doctor wandered into their lives. John Smith is the exact same as the rest of them, and he has to give the life and the woman that he loves so that the Doctor can win. It's truly heartbreaking, engaging, wonderful writing and television. God, I miss this era.

This story deals far better than most modern shows with past attitudes we viewers find unpalatable. It's a pet peeve of mine when shows sanitise the past, above all when they make characters we like behave in totally anachronistic ways, just so that we still like them. Alas, in later seasons Doctor Who forgets this.

RTD was the thing that made it great. Not just historical attitudes, but the way he writes lgbt characters as real people rather than stereotypes cynically used to make the writer look progressive. I don’t understand why some pro lgbt people are so progressive that they single out minorities for special treatment. They define people by their sexuality. Despite their good intentions they take society backwards in terms of equality.

I love this episode. It is interesting to see how he acts differently as a man from 1913 - I never thought of him as ever being cruel, he just thinks corporal punishment and military drills can make the boys into men, and that servants ought to have their place. I don't think if I were born into that era I would try to upend the system either, it's just the way things are.

You have now hit the point in the Doctor Who fandom were certain members will feel the need to try and push their narrative to make sure that how you feel about this show flows a certain way. I will state this "Doctor Who" fans are both the best fandom and the worst fandom rolled into one. Everyone will tell you what upcoming episodes are their faves, they will give their opinion as fact on certain characters and they will try to pass off knowledge of future episodes as things they figured out on their own to prove how "clever" they are. It is important at this time for you both to focus on enjoying this journey. This is "YOUR" journey through Doctor Who and unfortunately you are going to have to become mean to get to experience that. Thank you both so much for taking on this ride with you but please remember to enjoy this ride you are the ones on it, make sure you put your rules in place and please don't let the fandom ruin this for you.

It _does_ fit with the time period - but that's exactly the problem. The Doctor's decision to go for a period where he _would_ see Martha just as a second-class serving girl was moronic and asinine. "Don't let me abandon you - but I'll drop us in a situation where I won't care about your opinion and _certainly_ won't listen to you."
@jimmy2k4o
@jimmy2k4o Жыл бұрын
@@excessmaterialand then gave Latamer some personal advice, encouragement, lent him a book and told him he should be top of the class if he works harder. My point is the beating wasn’t a personal thing, it wasn’t vindictive, it’s just the culture of the school. As horrible as it sounds, that beating was morally acceptable in that time and place. Judging the past with modern day ethics is meaningless and unproductive. Our modern ethics weren’t created by us, they are inherited from the past and evolve over time. We learned our ethics by remembering all the past’s wrongs and learned from our historical mistakes. It’s the past you hate so much that gave you your ethics.

It’s really gross that, of all time and space, he chose to go to a time period where Martha would face racism and insults on a daily basis. It’s even worse that he doesn’t feel the need to apologize for it. I’d have demanded to be taken home the second that mission ended. It always angered me that the writers made Martha so passive about this moment. It’s like the showrunners hated the character and enjoyed putting her through hell in a way that White companions will never experience.
