It's Alex Kingston playing River Song. The name will stick eventually! She was in ER in the USA for quite a while I think, and she was in Moll Flanders over here among a thousand other things. She's outstanding.

Murray Gold's aptly titled "The Greatest Story Never Told" played during the climatic scene of River's (Alex Kingston) sacrifice, continuing when Donna was separated from Lee. You're in store for more wonderful narrative and background music soon.

There's a connection between this episode and "The Girl in the Fireplace" that I only realised recently. At the end of this episode when Donna asks the Doctor if he's all right, and he says he's always all right, that part of their conversation directly mirrors the same question (asked by Rose) and answer at the end of the earlier episode. Only this time we get Donna's follow-up question and response.

...and in another instance, River mentioned that this Doctor feels younger to her, somehow incomplete like on a photograph where a person looks like that. "Incomplete" reminded me of the clockwork droids in "Fireplace" scanning Reinette if she is complete yet - old enough for their matter... always Moffats writing seems to parallel one another.

In terms of two-parters, Human Nature/Family of Blood is my favourite, but was essentially a self-enclosed story. This one is so much more open, with River etc. Anyway, Midnight!

I just realised that in the end River Song was reading her diary to CAL and simulated children. Like fairy tail or adventure book. That's so cool. I mean, Charlotte got to dislike her "simulated" father, because it was really shallow and out of touch, while she improved her grasp on the situation because of events in the library. And in the end River basically adopted her.

In my opinion, the greatest story in the history of the show, and the beginning of the greatest string of episodes and peak of the shows history. Of course, going forward the show is still amazing, but this run is just unbeatable.

Why didn't Lee just step off the transporter pad and run after Donna??? Of course it wouldn't happen: how would their reconnection fit in with regular Tardis life, and I don't think Donna would have wanted to step off and settle down. The music is so beautifully integrated that often I don't consciously notice it - but I'd sure as hell notice it if it weren't there.

One of my fave two parters! Also dont forget steven Moffat wrote season ones two parter the empty child and the doctor dances another absolute classic! I love Russle T Davies era of doctor who but steven Moffat is an amazing writer and is already laying the groundwork with this two parter for when he takes over as showrunner for season 5!

This two part story was one of my all time favorites. It's especially great to revisit it after you have seen all of the other episodes with River in it. The next episode, "Midnight", is also one of my favorites.

Man this episode hurts on so many levels, especially on a rewatch. We have River realizing her Dr knew she was going to die. The Dr having to watch helplessly as this woman who knew his name die. Donna's children disappearing in front of her. Donna's husband not being able to call her name as he teleports away. Donna realizing her day with the Dr are numbered. Even River being "saved" only to remain as a living conscious, never to be with the man she loved again. 💔

There's this theory that moffat said he had when writing this where he never confirmed this really but when writing the episode he alwayse liked the idea that Dr moon is actually a far future regeneration of the doctor who's come to look after the girl, so when writing him moffat kind of subconsciously made him quit doctor like
