Bernard Cribbins is amazing as Wilf. That three line delivery “Labour camps... That’s what they called them last time... It’s happening again.” Is such a gut punch.

Absolutely. And, fact fans, back in the 1960's there were (colour!) cinema film releases of the first two dalek stories, and in the second (in a sort of alternate universe) Bernard Cribbins plays a companion to a (sort of) first Doctor Who (sic). So, companion to both the first and the tenth doctors! (and deservedly so). National treasure!

The scene that FilmBUFF references when Donna's mother (Sylvia) appears "clinically depressed" is so stunning that director Graeme Harper just focusess on her and leaves Donna in the background is phenomenal!

Every time I see this episode I have to cry. Basically from start to finish. The way Donna fails to realize she's worthy cuts deep. And once Wilf has his line about "That's what they called it last time" it's over for me. What an amazing episode and acting.

There is so much communicated in subtle silent moments. The stone cold hopeless look on Sylvia's face with a blurred Donna in the background is one of my favorite shots, and as great as Catherine is throughout this episode, when she just whispers "Please." in the end, that's when I usually break down.

Something downplayed about Rose in this episode is that she has traveled across multiple parallel universes in order to reach the Doctor so that he could stop the darkness from coming (This is never covered in the show so not spoiling). So her coming across a universe where the Doctor is finally alive and then seeing him die, is the reason she says “I came so far”. At that point, she’s less upset about the Doctor dying and more focused on the fact that the universe might die. Of course then she comes across Donna and sets her sight on her instead. As for how Rose even did all this I’m not spoiling a thing lol.

This is about as bleak as Doctor Who ever gets, and it's incredibly powerful. The general rule is "when Wilf cries, we all cry." The positioning of Rose as the Doctor here is very deliberate, right down to her never giving anyone her name and always wearing the same clothes. Useless trivia: Billie Piper had dental surgery only a few days before filming this, which is why she doesn't sound like season one & two Rose in places. She also had to re-learn the accent, which isn't Billie's natural speaking voice.

I can't think of anything to say that hasn't already been said, but I want to say something. I get quite narked at Sylvia, constantly putting Donna down, giving her no chance and no credit ... I suppose a lot of people can relate to that. I loved the touch of the little Torchwood theme when Rose mentioned Torchwood taking out the Sontaran ship. The fortune-teller was played by the same actor who played the blue alien in Utopia. I think Bernard Cribbins should be made Britain's Official Grandad. [btw, he was in a 60s Doctor Who film with Peter Cushing.]

If I thought Midnight was depressing, this one is worse, but that’s to be expected. You can’t have an alternate reality that’s better because of the nature of this kind of story and we also see what would have happened without the doctor... but there’s a huge plot hole. The daleks should have taken over in 1930’s New York so by this time the whole world should be under Dalek control.
@nepperoni2894
@nepperoni2894 3 жыл бұрын
It's not a plot hole, although I believe it's explained in the Sarah Jane Adventures (where the villain from this episode, the Trickster, actually appears). Basically the Trickster uses his powers to make sure events in the past of the time that is changed stay the same even if the events leading to them no longer happen (which is why the Daleks, Carrionites and Pyroviles haven't affected the present world). So in 1930's Manhattan the Daleks still get defeated by 10 with Martha there ... despite them both dying in the present before they would go to those events. This only applies to events of historical-based episodes - anything present or future related can easily be changed.

Great reaction and review as always! For my part, I didn't get the feeling that the fortune teller specifically targeted Donna and, through her, the Doctor. I think that she thought Donna was an ordinary customer, and that she got more than she bargained for. Like the Doctor said, "with Donna (the bug of the Trickster Brigade) got lucky"... Although it wasn't so lucky at the end: yes a whole world was created for it to feed off, but it seems to be dead in the end.

good episode but it spends more time telling us how important the doctor is than donna when this should have been donnas episode. this would be ok if the show didnt stop trying to tell us how important donna was. yes she tells him to stop but i could see any companion doing that. then she is a spectator for the rest of the episode. still good but could have been great. she also ends the episode denying being special so hasnt gone through any growth. you cant say she has become more compassionate as this episode points out she ends her very first appearance being very compassionate.
