I can NEVER watch the "Christmas Armistice" scene without tearing up a bit, and Doctor Who has nothing to do with it. But to see the miracle of Christmas 1914 unfold on screen is always incredibly moving - the day the true meaning of Christmas played out on a grand scale, and for one day we humans stopped hating, stopped fighting, and celebrated love and peace together.

Did you happen to notice the "bookends" to Twelve's run? The first time we see him, in "Day of the Doctor" ("No sir! All thirteen!"), it is a closeup of Capaldi's eyes. The last time we see him, it is a closeup of Capaldi's eyes morphing into Jodie's eyes.

Too give Jodie a chance, because I judged Matt before I watched him. Hated the idea, but I ended up loving him as the Doctor. It's one of the most amazing true historical stories and they got me with that. Also, when he revealed himself to be Leftbridge-Stewart, which I also figured it was him from the beginning but still, to hear the him say it, made me well up.

Tbf, the Time Lords were utter dicks when we first meet them, so I don't think it's that out of character for the First Doctor. Also, he did have his sexist moments in the original series(but so did Ian, Barbara and Susan, they were all characters created in the 60s
@ElectroTherapyFTSoul6 жыл бұрын
The First Doctor was an utter dick when we first met him... for his first three stories. Then Barbara Badass Wright beat some sense into him. The First Doctor would never have suggested the women clean the TARDIS, and he would find the glass joke offensive. 1960's mannerisms slipped in from time to time, I will willingly admit. He would be a bit more protective of the female companions, but he respective them and knew they could take care of themselves. The First Doctor was so much better then this.

Since the 12th Doctor IS the 1st Doctor in reality, and if we judge the Doctor as we judge people today, If you were sexist then, You are sexist NOW! Wonderful to be here again on your channel to see Doctor Who. Your comments about the misogyny being shown was spot on. Thats the way I saw it too. That was a product of the time, not the show/character. I read an article about it where Moffatt said is was put in and purposely exaggerated, supposedly to show how far us humans have come since the 60's, until now where a Female is at the helm of the show. Im not sure if that was a cop-out explanation, or how he intended it, but it was hit or miss depending on the person really.

I think this was actually a very good episode. If they had removed the bit with Rusty (despite the fact I love his character and the mirror he holds to the doctor), which just slowed the whole story down, it could have been brilliant. The Christmas truce, the original footage, the final goodbye to the companions and of course Capaldi’s last speech were all brilliant. Also on the sexist first doctor front, I do think there maybe should have been a mention to it - I mean just look at how companions have changed over the years - and we definitely should not disregard a persons opinions as being a part of the times or otherwise opinions would never change and we definitely wouldn’t have a woman as the next doctor. On the topic of Jodie Whittaker, I personally think she will be brilliant and I’ve said that all along despite the hate from some. This great opening scene from her - even though she admittedly only had two lines - hopefully will shut some of the haters up and make them go watch some of her other work and give her a chance at the very least. Looking back in my opinion I can honestly think of no better person to fill Capaldi’s very large boots. Hope all whovians have had a great Christmas and I’ll guess we’ll see how Whittaker’s first ep will go in autumn 2018.
@aliceplaysreactions646 жыл бұрын
on the sexist first doctor front - yes there should have been a mention but it was overdone imho i enjoyed seeing RUSTY again but it seemed a bit contrived. everything else was brilliant cant wait to see Jodie in action proper..unfortunately the hater will always hate, but we have no room for hate because hatred is ALWAYS bad. ::

AlicePlays Reactions I do agree. It was less of sexist undertones and more so shoving the message in your face. The depiction of the first doctor was pretty scummy in some scenes of this episode while the polar opposite in others. I just thought someone needed to point out that no matter how much I love this show it - much like almost anything - does not have a complete and utterly rosy history. This episode (there's not many) that made me cry at several moments. As a fan, I still miss Nicholas Courtney RIP who I met a lot of times and was a gentleman and to have his grandfather appear was beautiful (though I guess it would be a Lethbridge-Stewart). My grandfather was at Ypres (while still been underage!) and the coming today of both armies scene was moving. There were times in several stories where the First Doctor was impolite, especially as he got older, but they did overdo that sadly (I love his reaction when he finds out that Bill is lesbian). I also love the fact we had the original footage of the first regeneration, but the story didn't really call for Ben and Polly being in it for too long. The regeneration was better than the 11th/12th Doctors as it took time to reveal Jodie (welcome aboard Doctor 13), but I hope there is a reason for the Tardis to blow up like that as Chris Chibnal did ask if he could do it. Only time will tell. On the whole is was great to watch and I hope you have a wonderful New Year. See you in 2018. Oh Brilliant!

The doctor states “I died a few hours ago it catches up to you” but he died two weeks ago according to the previous episode when it states it.

Light one up for me, the 1914 Xmas cease fire was bouncing around between my mind and others just a few days prior to the Xmas special. But as I currently say, twice is a coincidence, thrice a conspiracy.

Oddly I found the first doctor being slightly less than PC quite fun, a gentle reminder that times do change. In some ways a brave choice.

The TARDIS is female and it shook her out! Did you notice? Those doors NEVER opened like that during a regeneration EVER. It was SHAKING her out the door!

The energy released this time is far stronger than the previous regeneration so it was able to damage most of the Tardis's interface. " The monitor indicates Multiple Systems Failures"

I thought this was pretty good, overall. Like you said, there were a few bits that weren't great, but it was still a fairly solid episode, and a good send-off for Peter Capaldi. He will definitely be missed (as will Steven Moffat - and Murray Gold, as it turns out), but I am super excited to see Jodie as the Doctor. I think she's going to be great. :)

Beautiful episode. I like how natural you are and not trying to fake scream or cry. couple of things that are bothering with the christmas special: 1. I don't understand why the 12th doctor doesn't have any memories of his encounter with his pervious self, or any memories of upcoming events, e.g. The 12th doctor mentioned that bill was turned into a cyberman right in front of the first doctor. yet he didn't take any precautions in the future to help her (to preserve the timeline perhaps, or because he knew that she will end up with hether?) 2. Why bother to collect the memories of ALL of the human race. surely no data base is THAT large, some humans are more significant than others. OR a very far descendant of stewart really wants to talk to his ancestors and learn of their history. 3. The idea of testimony is just freaky, does the fact that there was no testimony of the doctor but only memories of him from others suggest that the doctor will live forever? 4. What is the end goal of testimony? money, create a human library, what? 4. The 12th doctor was so reluctant on regenerating and I feel they didn't really explain why he did so at the end. You could argue that he advised the 1st is to think of all the good things he can do, and the same advice could apply to him, but it wasn't really mentioned. Why did regenerate? I could be reading too much into this.

I always liked the mystery shrouding the doctor's reason for leaving Gallafrey. It was kind of answered. Bill asks the doctor what he was running towards and not from. we know now the answer to the second part. But the first part...please tell me he wasn't running away because of the child born from 2 powerful races prophecy!

I wouldn't worry too much about The Doctor being ejected from the Tardis. (see The Doctors Wife) Do you imagine the Tardis would leave the one she stole in harms way? The sexist comments were really a reference to the fact that things-and times change. We, the viewers, all knew that at the end of the episode the Doctor was regenerating into a female--so the joke was on him. That was the point, but I agree it could have handled better. But now Doctor Who is in a fresh pair of hands and Chris is no mean writer. Shame we have to wait until the Autumn---but what an Autumn it will be! A new direction, an entirely new dynamic and less of the 'self reference' which was becoming stale--even for fans like me--and I was there in 1963. Jodie will become everyone's favorite Doctor--but what is really interesting will be the change in the 'personal pronoun' (from Him to Her) That must have given the writers something to explore.? My hope is that they return the opening theme tune to something more powerful--It became a little dull after the Tennant era. It was the power of the theme tune that was a part of its magic. But we'll see. Enjoyed your reaction. Will look forward to seeing your next.

When did casual sexism very much in keeping with the 1960s become _misogyny_ ? Misogyny in common usage (apparently until recently it seems) means "hatred of women". Sure the first Doctor's actual occasional sexism is exaggerated for laughs but he isn't presented as a woman hater in any way, shape or form.
@aliceplaysreactions646 жыл бұрын
you make some good points. maybe i shouldnt have used the word misogyny and left it at sexist (which was exaggerrated a little too much imho) Im just not sure of the point they were trying to make. oh well, It was still a thoroughly enjoyable episode.

Oh, it's not just you for sure. Seems to be a trend over the last few years, we're too keen to view _any_ transgression as the absolute worst IMO (particularly online). Sorry if it came across a bit ranty though, in general I find your reactions pretty balanced and perceptive and FWIW, I don't entirely disagree that Moffat maybe laid it on a bit too thick though for me it's a minor quibble in an otherwise good episode.

I actually think the misogynistic part was spot on. This was the tone of the first series, i think (before my time). Like Moffet said when he rewatched the old episodes preparing for this one: "No, don't send Polly after tea!". So it was there. Maybe it shouldn't be, given the character, but it was because of the times. So I really like that the episode adresses this and sort of redeems the character of it by having Bill scold him for it. And there is a nice arc to it: The misogynistic old man confronted by a more modern version of him self who apologizes before finally turning into a woman himself. A bit of spring cleaning, if you will. There is no doubt that gender will be a central theme of the next season, and this helps us arrive there. Oh, brilliant, I say... By the way, as a non native english speaker, those two words make me a bit nervous. Because I could not for the life of me understand what she said. It sounded french :D That's actually why I am on youtube now, to find out. I hope I don't have to watch the next series with subtitles :D

...as a 'non-native' English speaker... let me first say your English is AMAZING. As for her first words.... She said "Oh Brilliant"... just remember how difficult Capaldi's first few episodes were to understand and find hope. (not for me... I live about 20 KM from Capaldi's home ...and Sylvester McCoys.... and only 5 km from David Tennant.... maybe the Doctor likes being Scottish ;-) ) But still... relax your brain, and it'll all make sense. She's from northern England and has a heavy accent,,, but it'll be softened for the shows to come.
@vincenthunter16156 жыл бұрын
celt67 you will get used to the West Yorkshire accent as most people do. I live in South Yorkshire which is close but people speak very differently. However when I visited family very close to were Whittaker was originally from (about 3-4km) i had a bit of trouble with the accent at times but eventually it became second nature.

"I actually think the misogynistic part was spot on. This was the tone of the first series, i think (before my time)." So... you just said the misogyny was "spot on" only to say you aren't sure because it was before your time. That seems to sum up nearly everyone who believes this to be accurate. Doctor Who wasn't perfect in the 60s, I'll admit that. The outdated norms slipped into the show, and once in a while the First Doctor displayed this to and extent, but he was so much better than this. Those who watch his stories will know he never expected women to clean the TARDIS, and he would find the "made of glass" joke offensive. Again, it was the 1960s so it wasn't perfect and neither was he. But this was downright nasty in comparison.
@Accolonian6 жыл бұрын
"Spot on" as in a good choice for the tone of the episode, given the female arc I mentioned. It's true that I am not old enough for the original series (I joined up in 2005), but I am referring to the statements Stephen Moffett gave in a interview about how he saw the tone in the old show when he was researching for this episode. I don't think it was nasty. Exaggerated perhaps, but very tongue in cheek. And I also think that it made the character more well rounded, since there was plenty of other redeeming qualities. If not for this, the frist doctor would have been to innocent, I think. This way, he has a progression of his character, because of his interaction with Bill. But all in all, just a bit of fun, I don't think it was that important.
@vincenthunter16156 жыл бұрын
Danni Feveile Börm I also think that the arc in this story somewhat redeemed the first doctor’s slightly sexist qualities. By having the scolding from bill it did retract my attention from those small points in the original series.
