2:21 Yes, Holmes did return to write "Caves of Androzani", an absence of 6 years after "Kroll". John Nathan-Turner wasn't keen on using established writers, but thankfully made an exception for "Caves".

All the tropes of classic Doctor Who are here - a corporation looking to exploit resources which disturbs an otherwise peaceful monster, in turn worshipped by the local savages who are controlled by a zealous high priest. The only thing missing is the myopic scientist over-invested in his work. I can’t get over Neil McCarthy’s face - he’s the actor who plays the head company man Thawn. He also played Calibos in the 1981 Clash of the Titan and was in the movie Zulu! I feel for the actors and crew having to film on location in a marsh, and Wikipedia tells me the green dye used on the ‘swampies’ (what a name) wouldn’t come off for some time after production ended. All in all not a terrible episode, but pretty par for the course.

I watched this today and I had heard all the bad reviews and I thought this was a decent story but not great by any means and easily the weakest of the season. Tom Baker is great as the Doctor. Romana is good here. Thawn is a great ruthless villain how he only cares about his experiment and is prepared to kill anyone who gets in his way. The Swampies aren’t very good, just people dyed green, very lazy in my opinion. Ranquin is a decent villain but again isn’t the most intimidating and he looks silly. Kroll is a rubbish monster, just ripping of the Krynoid. Rhom Dutt is a good character but he didn’t need to die and his death was so rushed. Also Ranquins death is terrible as well. The pacing drags quite a bit but there were some entertaining scenes and I like the location. Overall not a great story.

Great review Ollie :). I have to say that The Power Of Kroll is a piece of utter s**t. A terrible script, bad characters (apart from The Doctor and Romana), awful monster and a dull execution. The location filming is great and Phillip Madoc does one last good performance as a guest character in the show and because of the location, K9 couldn't go there so it's great they gave John Leeson another character to play in this story to make up for it. But other then that and Tom Baker as The Doctor and Mary Tamm as Romana, this is an awful story. Apparently Kroll is as big as he is because he swallowed the fifth segment of The Key To Time, but it's still bad and a massive disappointment coming off the heels of the last four stories (especially The Androids Of Tara for me). Overall it is apsaloutly awful. 3/10. Glad you liked it a little bit more but yeah I totally agree with you (more or less). Also nice sketch.
