This is a better episode for the old school fans because the return of Sarah Jane and K9 was done so beautifully and means so much to them. Elisabeth Sladen’s return was so popular that she became the lead of the second spinoff after Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures. Torchwood is aimed at adults and SJA aimed at children, while Doctor Who is supposed to be aimed at both adults and children alike. Was really pleased to see this up! In response to the question about Doctor Who movies: there have been three. Back in the 60's, the first two Dalek stories from the show were recreated from scratch as theatrical movies (with Peter Cushing taking over William Hartnell's role as the 1st Doctor). Then, in the 90's, there was a TV movie that introduced the 8th Doctor (Paul McGann). It was a failed reboot for the show but it's still good (reaction worthy).

Hemdian yeah and the 50th anniversary special that I can’t wait for him to react to when he finishes series 7
@JakkFrost15 жыл бұрын
You've got it sort of right, sort of wrong. The Peter Cushing movies were more of a reboot or reimagining. They're not canon, and Cushing's role was a fully human man actually _named_ Dr. Who, who invented his own TARDIS and fights a version of the Daleks in his own alternate reality. I've actually had a theory for years now, since the end of season 4, that could loop Cushing's movies back into canon. David Tennant's metacrisis Doctor, the one who is human and can age and die, could be the very same man who "grows up" to be the Dr. Who from the Cushing movies. That way we could get Tennant back... and maybe even Rose!
@legoworld2463 жыл бұрын
@@JakkFrost1 Yeah, I can see that. Metacrisis then makes his own TARDIS and goes back to the 60s, because he liked that time period. And then he names his granddaughters Susan, and Barbara after his first companions, and because he's in the 60s, the Wilfred of that reality, who is called Tom Campbell is younger. I like that AU concept.

As people have already commented, you're watching the REVIVAL of the series, it began in 1963 and was cancelled in 1989. Had a TV movie that changed the 7th Doctor to 8th but didn't bring enough traction for a revivial until 2005. Trust me, the 2005 series is a much better jumping on point for fans today. If you were to watch the original series, it would take you even longer to catch up because the 1st ever story alone lasted 4 episodes, every episode was split into 4 or more parts. Just watch a video or an article that goes in detail about the original series. Trust me, they're going to reference a lot of the old series later on.

The TV movie might have managed to bring about a new series, but it suffered from very bad timing. Love the reaction! This episode was a real love letter to us classic fans & beautifully wrapped up Sarah Jane's story from the earlier era. She is without doubt the greatest of the Doctor's companions (& one of the longest) & played so well by the wonderful late lamented Elisabeth Sladen (we miss you Lis! 💜). The Doctor's joy at meeting her is at least partly Doctor Who fan David Tennant fanboying over one of his childhood favourites. In addition we get K-9 voiced by the tremendous John Leeson (another classic companion and very much beloved by the public & fans). Ironically K-9 & Sarah Jane never actually travelled together - they were united in an attempted spinoff in the early 1980s called K-9 & Company. P.S. Best wishes to your Dad.

When I was a kid watching Doctor Who in the '70s, Sarah Jane Smith was MY DW companion. Probably had a bit of acrush on her, to be honest, as lots of kids today would bave had acrush on Rose. It was a real joy to see her return in this episode, probably my favourite of this season. Incidentally, the final scene where she turns and walks slowly from the fading Tardis is almost a recreation of her final scene when she left DW back in 1976 (even down to the appearance of adog she talks to, though back then it was a Labrador in the street, not K9).

Oh, boy, yes!! It's impossible to explain what seeing Sarah Jane (and K9) means to soppy old Whovians like me, even though we knew it was coming. She was in eighteen stories in the 70s, five with the 3rd Doctor, 13 with the 4th, in some of the best-loved classic Who ever. I don't mind admitting my eyes were streaming for a lot of this episode, and not from hay fever! K9 never appeared in those stories (he turned up about halfway through Tom Baker's run) but later the Doctor sent her K9 Mark 3 to look after her. Tom Baker, off-screen, really didn't like 'the tin dog'.

There have been Doctor Who movies...sort of. In the 1960s, there were two movies starring Peter Cushing as a human scientist named Dr. Who (so...not really the same character). In the 1990s, there was a TV movie that was intended as a pilot for a revival series starring Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor, which wasn't picked up, and there have been limited theatrical showings of one or two special episodes since the revival (I know they did that for the 50th anniversary, not sure if it was done again). Sarah Jane was one of the most popular and long standing companions of the Doctor, traveling with the 3rd and 4th incarnations. After that, she was in a pilot for a spinoff with K-9, which wasn't picked up, but then they tried again after this and the show ran until she died. Anthony Stewart Head, who played the headmaster, played Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a very influential show that Russell T. Davies cited as one of the major inspirations for how to approach the new Doctor Who series.
@ErisRising6 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend checking out some of her classic Who work on KZbin (you can also find complete episodes on DailyMotion). Sarah Jane was the companion of the 3rd and 4th Doctors, and David Tennant is considered the 10th, so that was the reason behind the "I've generated a half-dozen times since then." from the first part of the episode. Also, she did end up getting a spinoff based on this episode, called "The Sarah Jane Adventures" Where "Torchwood" could be considered "Doctor Who After Dark", her series took the opposite tack, being more family-friendly, and, as you say, wholesome.

A quick bit of DW history. Sarah Jane ‘took over’ from Jo Grant (Katy Manning) in Jon Pertwee’s (DW3) last season. She left DW in the story The Hand of Fear. Shortly after, Tom Baker (DW4) acquired K9 in the story The Invisible Enemy. K9 left (officially) in the story Warriors Gate. K9 (Baker called it the ‘insufferable pun’) and SJ never traveled in the Tardis together, so how did they meet?. The BBC tried a spin off show in 1981 called ‘K9 & company’ which failed to get beyond the pilot. In the story, a crate containing K9 was found by SJ at her Aunt Lavina’s house, presumably delivered by the Doctor. K9 was inside and she’d obviously kept him until School Reunion. There is a story in the SJA where she eventually meets her predecessor Jo, along with Matt Smith (DW11). Enjoy watching DW in season order. I can’t wait for you react to Blink (season 3) which many regard as the show’s best episode so far. It has the scariest DW monsters to date, the weirdest conversation leading to a famous line about the nature of time. Oh, and remember not to blink!!.

I’m actually glad you brought that up, about there being a Doctor Who movie. There actually technically is a ‘movie’ of sorts. The original ‘Classic Series’ of Doctor Who ran from 1963 to 1989 when it was cancelled because of low ratings. Around 1995-6, over in America, FOX got hold of the Doctor Who rights and wanted to do their own American produced Doctor Who show, so they made a TV movie in 1996 starring the Eighth Doctor, to act as a potential pilot for this new show. Doctor Who was nowhere near as popular in the States as it is now, so it bombed like hell over there, but us Brits loved it of course, so FOX gave the rights back to the BBC, which eventually lead to the show’s eventual proper revival in 2005, starring Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor.
@oldwebshooter6 жыл бұрын
I'd say it was more that lower ratings, the BBC didn't want to do it nor really Sci Fi in general at the end half of the '80s because TNG was so much more grand a project that they couldn't compete until digital gave them much more for the same or not much more money.

Doctor Who movies...kinda. Back in the 60s they did a couple of Doctor Who movies - "Doctor Who and the Daleks" and "Daleks Invasion Earth 2150" (Daleks were the most popular monsters *then* too) - but oddly they used Peter Cushing to play the Doctor, rather than any of the TV Doctors, the films were basically just rewrites of a couple of popular Who TV stories, and even the inside of the TARDIS was just...weird. Even as all inclusive as Doctor Who is, they're not considered part of continuity/canon. Then in 1996, Fox did a made for TV movie staring the (now known as) "Eighth Doctor" (and a little bit of the Seventh) that was basically intended as a way to reboot Who (which had been off the air since 1989) and start an American series. It didn't pull in enough ratings however, so the reboot had to wait until 2005 and Russell T Davies's version (starting with the Ninth Doctor). However, in spite of only being in the one film, unlike the Cushing Doctor, Paul McGann's "Eighth Doctor" *is* considered canon and has had quite a few novels and audio plays.

The Doctor Who series you're watching is a direct continuation of the original run of Doctor Who, you're not watching a reboot or remake. Just because of the gap of 16 years they thought it best at the time to just call it series one when really it's series twenty seven. You should do classic Doctor Who, but it probably is easier to start with the new series to be able to get in and then adjust to a much older tv programme. When you do you really watch it in a different light, its a lot slower and more serious more often (even if sometimes effects might be amusing in retrospect). But it will over time become more like the show you know as the Doctor Whos go by. Yes there was two cinema films made in the '60s which were adaptations of the first two Dalek stories. Although they changed it up a bit.

The 8th doctor has a movie it came out in the 90’s

I don't like how Rose is rude to Sarah Jane without even knowing who she is, but I do get the part where there are all these past assistants/companions that the Doctor never told her about.

The 50th Anniversary of the show was shown in theaters. Had to buy tickets and everything, but there has not been an actual Dr Who movie.

Michael Bradley Yes, there has been a Doctor Who movie, in 1996, featuring Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor.

There actually was a short lived Sara Jane Adventures series that spun off from this episode. But it ended after season 3 I think because the actress who played Sara Jane died. :(

series 2 may be my least favourite run of episodes but this was fab rewatching this story.... as others have said Sarah Jane smith was the companion of the 3rd and 4th incarnation of the Doctor....and K9 also was utilised.....Sarah Jane woud go on to have her own spin off show for 5 years after season 2 of Doctor Who well worth a watch :) though aimed at a younger audience it dealt with mature themes. fun fact Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Anthony Head played mr Finch here he played Giles in Buffy so i geekd out when he was in this as i only got into Doctor Who in 2005 to fill that huge Buffy/Angel void when it ended ,3... School Reunion and the next eisode are my highlights of season 2 ;_0

This is my opinion but, even what are considered the best episodes aren't even that good.
@azizuladnan29576 жыл бұрын
@@lukerose384 Everyone has their own opinions. I can't change your mind. This is why I don't like ranking which is the best episodes, and which is the worst. As well as ranking who's the best/worst Doctor, or even best/worst companion. I just watch it either it's bad or good XD.

Yes to the Doctor Who movie. It's not strictly considered canon as it was produced in the USA and isn't exactly in keeping with the themes or story 100%. I believe it's called 'artistic license'. It's worth a watch as you get to see the 8th Doctor in action, but beware a 1990's heavy trippy experience. I personally enjoy the movie, so I'd say watch it, maybe even react to it. But don't take the 'facts' stated within the film to be meaningful to Classic Who (Doctors 1-7) or New Who (9 onward). It's mostly a device to entice the American audience into a failed 90's reboot.

There were also a couple of movies in the 60s starring Peter Cushing as the Doctor. They're fun but considerably less canon than the 90s one.
