I think with her first episode Donna spends a lot of time being in "me" mode (I mean, it WAS her wedding day, some of that is to be expected) so that last scene in this episode is touching because it shows us who Donna cares about most, outside of herself. The way I heard it David Tennant and Catherine Tate had a lot of fun working together on “Runaway Bride.” Tennant subsequently made an appearance on one of Tate’s comedy specials and they had even more fun doing that - clips are worth a look, actually, if they’re still on KZbin. So for the next year Tennant kept saying to anyone who would listen on the “Who” production how awesome it would be if Catherine Tate came back, but she had her own stuff going on so no way would she be interested, they thought. At the same time Catherine was telling everyone who would listen how much fun she had on “Who” with Tennant, but surely they wouldn’t be interested in having her back, yadda yadda. Someone finally got sick of hearing one or the other going on like this so out of frustration they made a call, found out the other would be delighted to reteam so the “Who” show runner built the fourth season around Donna Noble, and everyone lived happily ever after. 😊 Penny Carter, the reporter who was tied to the chair, is a remnant of the companion that was originally being planned as the season four companion if Catherine Tate hadn’t come back. The show runner has said he liked Penny Carter but he wasn’t sure how to make her different enough from Rose and Martha to be most effective, but he had no such problems with Catherine Tate.

I LOVE DONNA! She's the best companion of all time in my opinion, including Classic Who. Catherine Tate is a famous comedian (as well as a Shakespeare-trained actor) in the UK, and everybody was hyped when she became the companion! I don’t think you recognised him, but Donna’s granddad, Wilf, was the same old man the Doctor met when he beamed down to Earth in the Christmas episode you’ve just watched, Voyage of the Damned. Played by the same actor, Bernard Cribbins. The reason why he was drafted in as Donna’s granddad is because the actor who played her dad in the Christmas episode she was in, The Runaway Bride, died from cancer between the making of that story and this one. Donna’s mother is played by the same actress who played her in The Runaway Bridge. You guys are gonna love Wilf as the season progresses. The character, Penny Carter, the journalist who was tied up for most of this story, was originally going to be the name of the new companion. It was only when Russell T Davies had the idea of asking Catherine Tate if she would like to come aboard the TARDIS as a companion (to which she agreed to do), that the Penny Carter character was dropped. Catherine Tate’s performance as Donna is gonna blow you away this season. She is funny, smart but also dramatically she will get you in the feels a lot! The bees are dying out, planets disappearing, The Shadow Proclamation - what does it all mean? Buckle up boys for the best (at that time) season of Doctor Who there is!

Season 4 is just pure joy, can't wait to see how you react. I think everyone agreed that Donna started as "too much" in what was supposed to be a one-off appearance (Catherine Tate had an incredibly popular sketch show at the time and was incredibly busy). The biggest contrast to losing Rose you can imagine. You can see in this episode how the events of The Runaway Bride has changed Donna, but there's still a lot of the brash powerhouse underneath. You'll also get to see that Tate is not just an excellent comic actor, but an enormously skilful dramatic actor too.

So, I absolutely agree that Donna in her first appearance can be very annoying, but I also think her initial reaction to all the alien stuff going on around her is so very, typically, human. So what she was in outer space? So what she's been kidnapped by robot Santa and rescued by a Martian in a flying blue box? Don't they know she's supposed to be getting married?? Just that self-centered, self-focused perspective is so annoyingly human. Like Rekkai said during the Season 2 episodes, Rose represents the ideal, who we'd like to be in the face of the unknown. Donna's the reality, the way most of us would probably act but we don't like to admit it. I think this episode does a really good job showing who Donna is and a bit of why she is the way she is, especially the scene with her mum. The way Donna sits there, zoning her out, it's clear that her mum always talks to her and about her in a critical way, and Donna, who is loud and assertive, chatty and social, she shuts down around her mum. But then we see her with her grandfather, Wilf, and we see that he supports and encourages her, so she still finds room to dream and think positive. I think this episode deftly illustrates those two opposing forces in Donna's life and how they shape her. I also think the episode shows why it was good for Donna to turn down the Doctor's initial invitation, as she used that year to grow and mature. She's now showing up when the Doctor needs her, when she is ready for him. It's good to see the Doctor with a friend, and good that he learned from Martha and is clear on what he's looking for in a companion - friendship without expectation for more. Also just wanted to mention (although I'm sure it's been said by now) but Donna's grandda was in the previous Christmas episode, the only man on the street in London, working at his shop in solidarity with the Queen. It's a small coincidence that the Doctor should meet him right before reconnecting with Donna. I love how happy he is for Donna, cheering her on in her adventures. That he was the first trip Donna asked for really speaks to their bond.

Trying to be civil, *but you cut out the muted Doctor vs Donna dialog* ! The funniest part of the episode😢

Catherine Tate is a comedian and had her own very successful sketch. Who gives her a chance to show the range of her acting ability, as you will see in due course. I didn't immediately warm to Donna as I wasn't a huge fan of Catherine's comedy but she became one of my favourites.
