An episode with two of my favourite actors - David Tennant & David Morrissey. As a Canadian, the first time I saw David Morrissey was as "the Governor" in the Walking Dead, doing a light Georgia accent. I had no idea he was an English actor from Liverpool. He would have made a great Doctor. Apparently he was told he couldn't tell anyone that he wasn't going to be the next doctor. His kids kept asking "Are we going to have to move to Cardiff? (where Doctor Who is filmed)".

The Next Doctor you may recognize as The Governor on the early seasons of The Walking Dead. There are 4 more episodes, the reason was the show took 2009 off mostly. Next one is from April 2009 - Planet of the Dead. 🤣 "Think of the Childrenses!" Reminded me of Black Dynamite. I dig the Doctor Evil mouth pinky things at the end too. Jolly Good Show Sirs!! This ep is kinda mid for me too. The next one gets some hate from some, but I love it, and then the next 3 IMO are OUTstanding!! JS, the send off is w/style!

Dervla Kirwan, Irish Actress, Miss Hartigan. Done a lot of UK TV and is a good actress. Has done a lot of Stage plays and some films too. Also looked into her own history (TV programme Who Do You Think You Are) - Her Great Grandmother was sister to Michael Collins, the Irish nationalist leader. You could say her whole family had been against the British Victorian values, so any wonder she teamed up with the Cybermen 😉

David Morrissey and David Tennant also co-starred together in the series _Blackpoole,_ a musical detective show. Maybe you'll check it out sometime -- only four episodes, I think. I enjoy this episode a lot. The stakes are actually pretty high, because if this plan succeeded, it would changed the modern-day world (as we've seen demonstrated a couple of times). But, obviously, we know everything generally works out in _Doctor Who_ (outside of characters dying whom we might want to live sometimes). Coming into it and not knowing who the next Doctor is, you might think this is going to be it. The concept of meeting like this and having it be the case is certainly an interesting one.

The British Empire abolished slavery empire wide in 1834. Slavery wasn't allowed in Great Britain at least from the 1500s
@grabtharshammer3 ай бұрын
Actually the slave TRADE was abolished in Britain in the 19th Century, and slavery itself across the Empire as you said. However Slavery was not made illegal in Britain until the early 2000's, because it had never been recognised as a state of being in Law. So technically Slavery was allowed, just not recognised as a thing.
@RegianOne3 ай бұрын
@@grabtharshammer the 1807 slave trade act made the slave trade illegal in the British Empire. This act also allowed the Royal Navy to police the Atlantic Ocean, giving them thr authority to intercept all ships leaving from Africa. Many of those ships would be American. The Royal Navy would board those ships and confiscate the slaves (considered as property) and what ever else they wanted. The Americans also complained that American were pressed into Royal Navy service. These actions by the British Empire would lead to the Americans taking an action that would lead to the War of 1812. Because the British Empire was busy fighting Napoleon President James Madison thought that it was a good idea to invade Canada to annex it. Possibly forgetting that the Canadian Regiments were part of the same British Empire Army. Because the US was bogged down in Canada and the rest of the British Empire Army defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, they were dispatched to America. And when they arrived there were no soldiers to defend. So they burnt down Washington DC including the White House. Slavery in the British Empire wasn't abolished in 1834. Some nations in the West Indies still celebrate this anniversary as emancipation day. The majority of the people on the American ships were freed and taken to the West Indies. The problem was the local governors wanted to keep slavery in place. So further action was taken in London to Abolish slavery in 1834. Three decades before the US did.

Slavery was abolished by the Norman's in England after the Domesday Book revealed 10% of the population was enslaved. It was made punishable by a hefty fine/tax to the King. It was likely done solely as a way to raise some quick funds. In 1102 the Council of London reformed some laws regulating the Church and one change was to ban Slavery and you could be tried and punished in a Church court (not a Royal Court). The combination of being banned by the Church and heavily fined/taxed by the King effectively killed the Slave trade off, even though it wasn't technically illegal. It was the lack of an effective slave trade in England for 600 years that caused public opinion to be so heavily against the slave trade, causing the UK to set up the West Africa Squadron to stop slave ships, a court to declare that slaves a free as soon as they set foot on English soil and for us to attempt to heavily push anti-slave trade policy such as the embargo of Brazil.

The show runners are not squeezing out as many episodes as they can make David Tennant do, the main show runner Russel T Davies just loves Tennant so much he can't bare to put him down. Remember, he wrote Tennant a part where he's a 2nd Doctor who ages like a real human and can't regenerate. Tennant can be in his 70's now and still come back to be the Doctor in this show if they want to go back to that parallel world in 20 years from now, he's got a future acting part for life as the Doctor no matter how many other regeneration there are in our world.

yeah so at this point it was well-known to even a mainstream audience that tennant was on his way out, and davies sure loves to troll people who think they know what's going to happen. 😆 this and the next episode (an easter special) are good light fun, but the one after *that*, episode 16 by this count, the 2009 autumn special, gosh i frickin adore that one. just thinking about it right now, i'm getting chills from how much it hit me. absolutely one of the best episodes of doctor who, new series or old-at least, for my personal tastes. the show would hit that sort of peak for me again until the peter capaldi era (series 8-10). a cool thing about just watching the show straight through on a compressed schedule, as you two are doing, is how you can't really help just responding to the material on its own terms rather than spend months or years building up expectations. so i'm super curious how you'll receive the capaldi stuff. irl, the show had just been back for a long while when capaldi hit, and it had reached a critical mass of cultural saturation. the people who first got into it nine years earlier, many of them kids back in 2005, had outgrown it and didn't find it "cool" anymore. also, 2014-2017, tv viewing patterns were rapidly changing and and the bbc is a slow-moving ship at the best of times. so a *ton* of people skipped once matt smith left and projected all these weird ideas on the capaldi era without even watching it. if you get someone who used to be into doctor who but drifted away at some point, it's almost certainly gonna be around series 8. but thing is, this is precisely when the show gets a *massive* shot in the arm, creatively. those three series (well, two-and-a-half-the new writing team takes over midway through series 8) are, for me and many others who stuck through it, the absolute pinnacle of the show. ... there's also an ongoing joke in certain circles that anyone who made it through the capaldi era is trans now. which, anecdotally... uhm, well yeah. but one's individual milage may vary. 😆

The thing is though if Jackson Lake was supposedly a future version of the Doctor when he made the comment to Rosita that "This is hardly work for a woman" while the Doctor's personality does change with each regeneration and went completely a wrong turn he should be forward thinking with his attitude when it comes to misogyny but with the Classic Doctors they were more upper class and more in charge with authority than the modern Doctors and yes there was a slight bit of sexism with his female companions but Doctors, companions and times evolve just like James Bond but he does care for his companions.

@Persewna43 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'm with Rekkai on this episode, it's fine just not amazing. In a ranking of Christmas Specials it's definitely toward the bottom, in an all episode ranking I'd put it in the middle. The story is kind of bland and the scale feels small, but there are some great character performances, esp the villain, as well as the early mystery surrounding the "Next" Doctor. I do like how that mystery resolves, although once it does the rest of the episode loses a lot of tension. Like, there's never doubt that the Doctor will stop the Cybermen, and the way he does has barely any impact, compared to previous ways the Doctor stopped the Cybermen. I think the reason it feels like the threat is smaller is because it is. If we look at the Cybermen's last appearance, they had taken over the entire globe in a matter of minutes. In this episode, everything they've done has been contained to this one small town. We also don't see any characters get "upgraded", which takes away from the personal stakes for the Doctor and the audience. This is actually the first of the 5 specials, so only 4 left to go. The next one is meh, but the one after that is phenomenal, I would say on a similar level as the second half of season 4. Looking forward to seeing you react to them sometime soon!
