“Thomas Thomas” was a joke. There used to be a GPS unit called ‘Tom Tom.’ The kid was giving directions like a GPS and his hame was ‘Tom Tom.’ I guess that joke didn’t age very well.

This is a fun episode. The Paternoster Gang, the Victorian setting, the steampunk rocket. Towns built by industrialists for their employees were a real thing in the 19th century. Dame Diana Rigg played a great villain. In the 60s she was an action heroine in the Avengers and a Bond girl.

The character of Jenny is good and the outfit she fights in is a nod to the character of Emma Peel in The TV Avengers who was played by Diana Rigg.

I love how you loved this one! This ep gets a bad rep sometimes, but I think it's fun too. "The wrong hands" line is a keeper for me too! Vastra, Jenny & Strax are often called "The Paternoster Gang" I think after the street they reside on. Hey, Happy Holidays to you both and all the people you love!

Dame Diana Rigg (sadly no longer with us) and her real life daughter Rachel Stirling (Ada) pull the same stunt of playing mother and daughter in ‘Detectorists’. Accents: Dame Diana, born in Yorkshire doesn’t have to fake a northern accent, and neither does Jenna Coleman. Rachel Stirling and Matt Smith are faking. Interestingly, Jenny and Vastra are also ‘acting’ their non northern accents being Welsh and Scots respectively in real life. Mark Gatiss who wrote this episode is also a Yorkshireman, and I’d swear ‘Sweetville’ is based on Saltaire, between Leeds and Bradford in Yorkshire which he’d be familiar with - a Google search for images will illustrate this. It even has a canal running through the centre of it! I’m also a Yorkshireman, and yes, I have been to the top of Buckden Pike!

If you decide to explore classic TV there is of course "The Avengers" (1961-1969), actress Diana Rigg starred as Emma Peel with Patrick McNee as John Steed. For those of us in the 1980's and 1990's watching Doctor Who for the first time, it was a gateway to seeing other TV shows.
@ag48717 күн бұрын
Just to make it clear. The Avengers has nothing to do with Marvel. Indeed its existence forced Marvel to rename their movie to Avengers Assemble in the UK to avoid any confusion. The Avengers was groundbreaking in having female characters who kicked arse rather than standing around screaming which was the norm at the time. It didn't hurt either that young Diana Rigg looked great in a black catsuit.

To clarify (Clara-fy?), the "gobby Australian," the Doctor was referring to was companion to the Fourth and Fifth Doctors (mainly Fifth) named Tegan Jovanka, played by Janet Fielding. She joined in Four's last story Logopolis, and won spoil when she left, but it was nearly the end of Five's run. She was a flight attendant, hence the reference to getting her to Heathrow Airport, where she hoped to be dropped of in time for her to get to her job. I'm speaking for myself here, but I think Strax is the best character to have come out of the Moffat era. Pure gold every time we see him, and I really wish someone at the BBC had the balls to commission a Patternoster Gang spin off when they were at their most popular, though I think people would still go for it today.

@gestaltdude9 күн бұрын
@@ianpark1805 I've never really got into the Big Finish series. I'm sure they're worthy additions, but I think I was turned off somewhat by the missing adventure series of book produced in the 90's.I think it was their questionable place in cannon that turned me off, though I understand some of that has been brought into the series, eg in Night of the Doctor when we had Eight listing the companions from those stories. End of the day I've a mindset that doesn't allow for shades of grey, which is why I've also never bothered with any books or fan produced work based on Star Trek.

Possibly youre thinking of Thomas Cooke, who are now a chain of travel agents, but the original Thomas Cooke produced compiled lists of train timetables (across Europe) as an aid to travellers. Having Dame Diana Rigg in this one is quite apropos as the plot is the kind of thing you'd get in The Avengers (albeit set in modern times). As well the film vetsion of Moonraker, and Doctor Who did it before with the Rattigan Academy, preserving the "best" people and starting again.

(Dame) Diana Rigg, British national treasure since the 1960's She was a Jenny before Jenny was, back then in a series called The Avengers (Spies & Stuff) she wore the Tight Leather and kicked Arse with her Oriental fighting styles, one of the original female action heroes. she was also a Bond Girl. Movies, TV and Theatre, a long and industrious career. Topped by playing a villain in Dr Who. - By the way you missed the joke about the young boy giving Strax directions, Thomas Thomas?? or Tom Tom, Turn left, you have arrived at your destination. Not a book, one of the very first SatNavs - BY THE WAY: The reason I put Dame in brackets, is because it is the equivalent of being knighted for a male, same as being Sir somebody, it is not hereditary and the Title ceases when you die
