I can’t lie capaldi’s era was the last time I felt truly special about doctor who. I started watching it back during smith’s era caught up from eccselton to the end of smith and finally had my first full run through experience with Capaldi and when he left I was like that’s it. I respect whitikater but she could’ve never lived up to capaldi. Not only that everything was different with whitikater’s era and it was just a massive hole in my love for doctor who. When I heard RTD was coming back I was excited along with the return of Tennant. Come the 60th specials I was severely disappointed bc they didn’t feel like specials and it’s just not the old feeling of wonder I was hoping for. The following series only worsened this for because it just wasn’t the doctor who I wanted. So YeS 100% doctor who hasn’t been the same since Twice Upon A Time

I think you're completely right in the sense that this series' low points are quite low, but when it's good, it's amazing and borderline the best of new who. I'd disagree personally about it being B tier though. I'd say this series is where Capaldi truly shines as one of the best doctors out there

Bill got a raw deal, because Nardol stole all the really fun parts of being a companion He was the one who got to make jokes, and he was the one who built up a history with the Doctor, and was there to call the Doctor out if he took something too far. With him doing all that, Bill got pushed mostly into the boring parts of being a companion: someone who can say "what is it Doctor?" whenever he needs someone to prompt an explanation for thev sake of the audience

@@pikehead1 i don't think it's about acting chops but about understanding the character. whittaker is an okay actor and gatwa is good in the few moments he gets to do anything but capaldi was able to elevate the material he got because he has a deep understanding of the show and the doctor. he was literally a doctor who fan his entire life. i would agree that they were miscast too but i'm not sure that's 100% a matter of acting chops but more about the understanding they have of doctor who. whittaker literally never cared about the role too she straight up said she never watched any doctor who so she was going 100% off of the empty scripts. also, genuinely both whittaker and gatwa didn't get any good material. neither of them really got anything characterization wise. even boom which is easily the best episode from series 14 doesn't really have much characterization for the doctor. 13 literally has nothing that explores or develops her character at all. the most 13 gets is that she's sad about her planet being destroyed and the most 15 gets is that he was adopted. capaldi had duds too but his doctor got to be a full character. if he switched places with whittaker it probably would have been better than what we got but it still wouldn't have been the modern classic we have today

It might not be the best overall, but Series 10 did the most important thing - finally sold me that 12th is the best Doc. Heaven Sent was nice and all but S9 was too busy to feel it through; S10 gives space to breathe and truly appreciate the stoic nature of 12th and his dramatic monologues. I personally loved it as Capaldis final with him having an adventure with the first doctor considering he was going to be the last male doctor with Jodie taking over.. even though i know quite a few complained about the portrayal of the first doctor feeling disrespectful towards Hartnell with jokes about him acting "old fashioned" but personally I just think of the first doctor as like a young child that will sometimes say inappropriate things lol and the cameo of Clara was a nice touch so overall I loved it as a final + regeneration story.

David Tennant and Matt Smith were excellent choices to play versions of the Doctor as an ancient, damaged being, cosplaying as far younger than they are under the weight of the horrendous trauma they had just experienced during the Time War. Refusing to acknowledge what had happened and what they had done, in place of a veneer of being silly and fun, and occasionally letting the mask slip to reveal someone very dark and broken deep down. Peter Capaldi is the character finally acting their age and, at last, coming somewhat to terms with all of that. He plays the character incredibly, but more importantly, he was the right actor to portray the character at this point in their development. He manages to blend elements of every previous Doctor into his performance, to maintain cohesion and continuity, whilst still making his own portrayal unlike any other. THE BEST to ever do it.

I remember when the Capaldi era aired, and I thought it was amazing, and I couldn't believe that so many fans tuned out during those 3 amazing years. It's so great to see the shift in perspective that's happened since then and how many people have come to around to the greatness that was on display. Shame that it took the complete drivel of the Chibnall era to make people realize how good Capaldi's run was but at least it's getting more of the credit that it's due.

That was a good review of Series 10, and I will say it is the weakest series out of the Moffat era. I will say the Moffat era is my favorite era out of Doctor Who because it tried something new and fresh and saying goodbye to an era that has been with me from the 7th Grade all the way to my life as a grown up is really hard. Peter Capaldi was a really great Doctor and to be honest it really did feel the end of Doctor Who as a whole.

I've always loved Capaldi's run. During Smith's era I was the type to wear a fez and bowie to school, and thought he would always be my favorite. By "Listen" Capaldi claimed that title and won't let it go, only getting better with his tenure. I did 'enjoy' the Whittaker era in the sense that it was Doctor Who being released (a comedic take, I do have some things I like about her run) and I loved and look forward to Gatwa's first and upcoming seasons, but in this moment to me nothing will compare to series 8 9 and 10 as a whole.

It was a satisfying conclusion to his run, Capaldi always delivered even during episodes I can't stand. But to me, series 9 is always going to be the best simply cause besides the Sandman episode. The episodes ranges from very good to the best episode Doctor Who is ever going to have and no other episode will ever be able to top it. Series 10 just has too many episodes in which I can easily skip large chunks. Though there is no denying that the last 3 went out on top which I'm thankful for, it would have been sad if the skippable episodes was among the last. The Doctor is always going to continue to be a thing in some form even if the show manages to get cancelled again. If someone wants an endpoint I would say this is a good place to end it. But if they want a bit more resolution and have a happy ending. You only need to watch 12 episodes from 13th's run to get the main gist. Ending it with the 60th anniversary specials seeing as you could say that is how "our doctors" story concluded.

@@DrWhoFanJ What can I say, certain episodes don't speak to me. That being said for maybe 90% of the first 10 series. I can find individual scenes or stretch of 10 minutes in the episode that is fantastic. And there are certain two parters. Where I will think its great. But not feel inclined to rewatch much of the first part. Like the flesh episode, part 1 is good and needed. Though upon a rewatch I'll fast forward most of it cause its so much mystery that I already know the answer too. Not that its the case all the time, but for some two parters once I have the answers I more enjoy the character focused moments than watching the mystery. Then you have the sandman or empress of mars episodes. Where I couldn't care less. have a huge amount of respect for Mark Gatiss. He's done two episodes which I quite enjoy and even in other episodes I think are bad will have great moments in them. But for some reason I've realized upon rewatches that most his episodes are the ones I find to be among the weakest. I wish I knew why, because if he manages to have great moments in them. And he's proven that he can make good episodes with Victory and Sherwood. But his lows are very low.

I love Capaldi & this season too. Funny you should mention that Missy/Master should have been rested after this season or the next Master should have been a previous incarnation. In my head cannon I see the Master reincarnations in order being John Saxon, then the Spy Master, then Missy. Otherwise Missy's redemption arc is wasted & makes no sense. Also, at the end of his incarnation John Saxon Master is spitefully homicidal , when we meet Spy Master he's just as spiteful against the Doctor but over time wants to Be the Doctor by the end (stopping to demolish Gallifrey, again), then when we enter the time of the Missy incarnation, the undercurrent of everything she does is that she wants her friend back, initially trying to corrupt him to join her & later in the vault, wanting to earn his trust. I disagree about Bill, I thought the character was very strong & held her own while sharing the narrative with both Nardol & Missy

It’s funny, I remember thinking during my rewatch that this series (and The Doctor Falls in particular) just felt like the end of the show, and you crystallised why in this video. It’s not really so much to do with the Chibnall era, either, or specifically me not being a fan of it (although I’m not). More that the Davies and Moffat eras just seemed to dovetail nicely. There were differences, sure, and the two certainly write differently, but there were similar themes and characters, and that all culminated in this series. Nothing that has come after this has felt like it’s the same show, not even Davies Mark II. The character remains, some other characters and villains return, it’s like the furniture’s the same, but you’ve moved house. I felt very meh towards Series 10 when looking back at it initially because of the huge gulf in quality you cover, but I had managed to skew negative in my view of it. I forgot great episodes like Oxygen and Extremis (I had judged the Monks trilogy by the way it ended), and the two part finale. It doesn’t match up to the two previous Capaldi seasons, but it’s a worthy ending for this era of the show nonetheless.

For me series 10 was/is fab... Bill was great and yes, LGBT folks sometimes talk about their sexuality... cause it's often 'an issue' in society ... heterosexual folks don't drop it into conversation cause they don't need to..

Someone correct me if I’m wrong: has it ever been said in the show that Saxon regenerates into Missy? My personal head canon since Series 10 has been that Missy is the end of the character and Master’s like Sacha Dhawan come between Saxon and Missy. I imagine Big Finish might have done something but has it been said in the show?
@ishathakor
@ishathakor Ай бұрын
i think it's ambiguous enough that you can see it either way but dhawan was intended to be post-missy

Yes, it has been confirmed that John Simm regenerates into Missy. The confirmation is in _The Doctor Falls._ And Sacha Dhawan is explicitly post-Missy.

Whilst i see this series aa a bonus year ....Series 11 was a needed change ....by 2017 whilst i loved moff era capaldis was jarring year to year as friends of mine tapped out from seeing it....the whittaker chibnall era i felt i could clean slate go all in ....Series 11 made me appreciate series 10 a lot more but too it was a refreshing new take and i dare aay Whittakers debut year needs to be re-evalued she literally has 9 bangers in a row TWWFTE- ITYA is the best run of episodes since Smiths era imo... And i loved that Chibnall went full on Hartnell meeta modern era vibe ....so nostalgic 2017-19 was transgressive and nedded for the show anf all our lives too

I'll stick up for this one. It seemed like Capaldi's Doctor was finally being written in a fully rounded way and the new home base as a lecturer setup and companion worked well. Most of the stories are disposable though. Smile and Oxygen are harmless if not heather igniting but things really shine with the trilogy starting with Extremis and the Mondasian two part ender. The former suffered for the unnecessary "wuv will save the day" conclusion, but if you mentally clip out a few minutes you can just pretend the Doctor risked his brain and fixed it (Bill had already proved her worth so it wouldn't diminish her). This is a tedious tendency in the modern era - for the sake of one more final "oh no it hasn't worked" we have to get wuvvy from nowhere. The latter can keep its "wuv" salvation of Bill because even though it came cold out of almost nowhere the character deserved it. The only real problem here is that it should have ended in a regen as intended, but Chibnall didn't have an idea in his head for a Christmas episode so Moffat had to give it just one more final hard squeeze out. Twice wasn't half bad actually - suitably lightweight, yet poignant, a bit of a circling back and the Brig's predecessor, but some totally unneeded modern supercilious poking at a few remarks by One, which were hardly defining. And it proved that Chibnall's "no more to be done with Xmas" attitude was a demonstration of the dullness of his imagination. He didn't do anything interesting with New Year either... PS Regarding Xmas stories my fingers and laptop can't command the attention of the new era old boys' club but I'll give some thoughts anyway. A Xmas episode doesn't have to be deeply themed, merely set at that time and reflect the spirit of the season (which Who generally does anyway). But I'd pitch 1) A mythical/historical story about Wenceslas turning out to be not as good as expected, involving a sinister alien clockwork duplicate of him and the solution based around the grand clock in Prague; 2) a whip around some favourite situations, friends and foes whimsically scifi themed around the 12 days; as a trap/puzzle set by ?. With the resolution being a time travel trick based on the little known fact that the 12 days actually begin on Christmas day. PPS I suppose it might be interesting to point out that what is known in the West as the Carol of the Bells (used as a Ruby theme) was originally a non-religious Ukrainian festive song about a little bird heralding prosperity and peace after a year of diligent toil. While the show seems happy to wade into culture "wars" it wisely doesn't specifically comment on actual current conflicts. But I doubt that tune was chosen at random (Gold would know the derivation even if Davies doesn't). The original vocal version is very beautiful and worth a place on your Christmas playlist.

Honestly, I'm tired of rating doctor who. "Who was the worst Doctor?" "Who was the worst companion?" "Who was the worst show runner?" "What was the worst episode?" "What was the worst series?" "What was the worst line?" Guys... If you don't like this show, then just say that. Don't claim to be a fan and then openly dislike most of the show.

Harsh to say Bill is the most forgettable companion....I mean Martha was pretty awful!! As a character and as an actor.....example, the awful acting of the strained face and putting the hand out to her mother when she has the austahagan key and gets teleported. I need to rewatch this series again. Around this time I dipped out of Doctor who. After Day of the Doctor I was disappointed by it. And season 7 being split in half annoyed me, as it broke from tradition, I also didn’t really like Clara all that much. I watched s8 as it came out and liked many elements of it. But grew tiered of Clara being another mystery box. And the hybrid story I have come to really appreciate now but if Clara wasn’t the impossible girl before it I would have liked it much more. Her ensign too annoyed me. Peter as the Doctor has surpassed Matt now I’m older but at the time I didn’t like his grumpy coldness, again as I grew up with 8,9,10. I was in my mid teens and was all angsty liking GoT more. I began to rewatch s8 and 9 and liked them much more. I haven’t watched s10 since it came out. Jesus that was years ago scary. I think I blamed Peter when actually it was Moffat all along I didn’t like. Peter is actually the best part of this era, I defo prefer his interactions with Clara more than 9. Edit I have since watched classic who and really like that 10 feels like a classic who Doctor.
