@@SonitoShoriit’s not blood benders, it’s a specific line of blood benders…also the point of the show is to show how the priors generations ability limits always gets outperformed by later generations. For instance lighting bending only being available to the royal family but that’s a seperate discussion. Of course at one point there’s going to be a mutation that puts someone leagues above others. It makes that specifically lineage broken…not blood benders as a whole. Much like how lava bending is stupidly broken. Things evolve and change.

Earthbending is shown done pretty well by the benders on the lion turtles. It's not like they're the first ones to learn it properly in ATLA, it seems like they're the first to actually DO IT, and that no one has done it before, In Wan's time they seem pretty good at bending, probably as good as ATLA's bending, so how would Badgermoles actually change that?

I'd like to add that, in the movie, the water bender chief even SAYS "we need to turn off all flames to weaken the firebenders", but when the fire nation invades, there are still fires everywhere! On another note, they didn't establish a rule for metalbending requiring physical touch: you said yourself that there is a scene where it is done from a distance, plus no other bending stile requires physical touch. I'm also not a fan of the platinum thing, especially because there is no reason for it to be specifically platinum: they say it's "too purified to bend", so even random iron could work the same purpose if refined enough, but they had to go with platinum for cool factor, I guess

Honestly I thought it was a flawed and poorly written show, most characters are have as much character growth as rocks with no overall character development that shows any major differences between the start and end of the series. It deconstructed many of the main elements of the avatar while also ruining what was left especially the avatar wan episodes which had concepts which were just idiotic. A few major things that pissed me off was Amons blood bending without a full moon and how that somehow translated to taking away someone’s bending, the stupid laser beam kaiju battle at the end of season 2 and zaheers “motive” which was not clear at all. Characters were set as plot devices without any actual meaning and even the overall progression of the avatar world didn’t make that much sense. Legend of Korra is praised for being mature and dark when it only looks dark. For example Korras “ptsd” which she got over because she got over it. PTSD is not smth u jst get over with. @@edgeribble i don't think it's flawed but i get where you're coming from. I kind of always found it strange that the bridge between the human and spirit realms was just a randomly selected person. Makes more sense to me that an all powerful spirit chooses a person to be its vessel. I also think your idea of balance would imply both spirits to be two halves of opposing forces that would come together to preserve balance, when they're more like two whole embodiments of two entirely different concepts. The existence of Raava IS the balance they're talking about.

One thing I’d take note of for the “physic bending” is that King Bumi was able to bend earth with just some head movements as well. So it stands to reason that if you’re that extremely gifted of a bender, it IS possible to bend without arms. Just extremely unlikely. As for metal bending, I assumed you could only use it with your physical body at first because Toph just discovered it, and was still in the process of mastering it by the end of the series. With Decades of practice from her and others experimenting with it, I think it’s safe to say metal bending being used from a distance makes sense after evolving the techniques. As for the rest of the arguments, agree 100%.

They HAVE made another good avatar, it just isn't animated or live action. You make a lot of good points but your gripes with LOK seem very nitpicky. For example, A lot of people dislike psychic blood bending but never have an issue with combustion man from ATLA, who is literally projecting explosions from his head. Gives off the impression that if metal bending were invented in LOK, it also would be a hated new concept. When you're quick to disregard anything that didn't happen in ATLA first as not making sense. It feels like you're more of ATLA fan than an avatar fan. It feels like a very biased review when people overlook ATLA's inconsistencies and plot conveniences and yet completely drag down LOK's
@Jlnkht
@Jlnkht 14 минут бұрын
I agree, adding that we did see some of the new things already in ATLA without realising it: Bumi was able to earth bend while restrained in a metal cage by simply moving his head. To me, that seems similar to the ‘psychic blood bending’ but without the need to give it a name. It feels logical to me that in a world with this many benders, some’s capabilities can be greater than others’.

Power creep is kind of a big problem. I don’t really have a problem with psychic bending though, because it feels like the show just naturally getting bigger and expanding people’s movesets. A lot of Legend Of Korra criticizers say that psychic bloodbending was a bad idea but past season 1, like… no one psychic bloodbends again. Rare new powers are perfectly fine when they keep it small and contained, and don’t let everyone use it or else they’ll be too overpowered and you’ll write yourself into a hole.
@two_squared
@two_squared Күн бұрын
Hey wait, the characters in LOK have lots of different arcs, especially with Korra. Korra learns how to calm down and deal with things with more tact instead of head on especially when dealing with her PTSD. Bolin gets a new skillset and has to deal with doing the right thing which he believes he’s doing by being a part of Kuvira’s group, Asami’s father literally dies and she has to grapple with handling her company, the 3 airbending siblings learn to appreciate each other more, (along with Kya, Bumi and Tenzin.) You can’t describe LOK characters in one word either. They all have multiple personality traits and things they have to deal with. By reducing their personalities to one word you’re leaving out the things they have to deal with. Mako’s slick, but he’s also broody and loves his brother. Korra’s a hothead, but she’s also a go-getter and is really eager to be an avatar. Bolin’s a goofball, but he believes in doing the right thing and is also a hopeless romantic.
@two_squared
@two_squared Күн бұрын
Honestly I could argue that LOK’s group is slightly less forced together. Korra LOVES bending and part of her arc in season 1 is learning to be free, which is why she persues freedom by going to the pro-bending tournament despite not being allowed to. It feels like 3 teens meeting because they enjoy each other, the objective isn’t really at the forefront. Asami also does kinda feel forced, which I can understand but she’s there for a reason too, the pro-bending team needs to be sponsored. (Also it’s because in early versions of the script she was gonna be an equalist spy) The Fire Ferrets are poor. Do you see where they live? No understudy, they were lucky to have Hasook in the first place, which is why when one waterbender left and another one appeared they jumped at the chance no matter how unprepared she was, because pro-bending was their chance to get rich. “Pure chance” the original Team Avatar literally got sucked into a swamp with no explanation as to where that tornado came from. If they didn’t, they never would have seen Toph. This is also really really contrived. The people who say Bolin is a less funny Sokka are so dumb, it’s like they didn’t even watch ATLA. Sokka is smart, witty, a punching bag and brave. All of these things Bolin isn’t. You’re actively insulting ATLA by comparing these 2.
@two_squared

Being interested in something is completely subjective. Most of the callbacks are there for furthering the current present plot. Aang is there to warn Korra. Toph is there to help Korra out of her misery. Iroh literally takes Korra out of the dark and into the light. Zuko helps track down the red lotus. Katara and Sokka barely do anything yet they’re interesting? They left Sokka’s wherabouts a mystery on purpose, intentionally leaving stuff out because this is about the present. Not the past.
@two_squared
@two_squared Күн бұрын
With the psychic bloodbending thing, a lot of the fights in Avatar require you to think creatively or out of the box. In LOK, Korra doesn’t defeat Amon by punching him harder, he’s ultimately defeated by Korra exposing him for who he truly is, depiecing his political facade. Similar things happen with Ming Hua and P’li. They’re outsmarted by tricky maneuvers as a natural extension of the bending. With metalbending: No one said the rule outright. Physical contact being “correct” is a matter of personal preference. You said it yourself, Toph bends the metal without touching it, but she only does it once. A natural progression would be in 70 years of bending experimentation it would probably get way easier for metal to be bent. Or what if they specifically make metal that has more earth in it and is more bendable?

26:00 sooooooo in all fairness the original series had a fire bender that used "psychic" fire bending to create explosions. I think the writers of Korra expanded on that to create "psychic" benders for other elements. At least they restricted it like the original show. "Psychic" fire bending was only creating explosions and in Korra "psychic" water bending only used blood bending. Still thought it was kind of lame since we had already seen blood bending and with explosion guy we had never seen fire bending be used that way before. Making blood bending be able to be done as a "psychic" implies that all bending could be trained to ignore the requirements of movement, which is dumb.

Heres my thought on Yakone bloodbending any time. They should have shown that he possessed a shard of the RED MOON. Remember when in Avatar Season 1 finale, the death of the fish caused the Moon to Turn red? Let's say that the death of the moon caused red moonstones to fall down, and some were found by watertribespeople, and treated as sacred artefacts. Yakone came to possess one, and naturally, having an actual piece of the moon would allow you the full moon powers at any time, and would heighten a waterbenders powers to enable bloodbending. That red moonstone can become the gem within Amon's Mask forehead, explaining his unusually strong bloodbending powers. Hence, his belief isn't just that bending should be eliminated - but he would have a religion fahsioend after what Zhao did in S1 - that the death of an ancient spirit yielded powerful artefects that can be used to redistribute power among mortals. He believes that destroying the avatar will allow him to steal her power to posses or redistrubite as he wishes, just as the death of the moon-fish yeileded moonstones.

I can't agree more I've been thinking the same way for a while now. To add on to what you said I think that every addition to the avatar universe will become it's starwarsification. ( i.e. originally the creators had an idea and now with every addition it strays farther from it leading to a very divided fanbase) Is their direction a bad thing? the best way ive heard it is that because the legend of Korra strays so much from the original it isn't canon and can't be canon. But that doesn't mean it doesn't make an interesting standalone story. I also think people are going to be upset about the new additions even when they engoy the legend of Korra as a pathological story. I think someone does need to stand up to the avatar studio and make an official sequal to avatar one that follows the rules of the original and one that also adds to the world of avatar. Because one thing Korra did do well is add a lot of world building even if it didn't follow the narrative.( Will this happen no! if someone tries to make an animated show with the name avatar on it they'll get sued out their brains and even in a world that they don't it won't work because it most likely won't be taken seriously)

I liked the video! It explains the many faults with avatar sequels / adaptations. It didn't really answer the title question 'WHY cant they make another good avatar'? It just explains how they failed in each sequel or adaptations. The answer to WHY they cant do a good one again, is probably to do with the fact that (and this was asserted by E;R) that Bryke weren't the key contributors in the writing room, that it was actually AAron Ehaz, who didn't return at much if at all for the planning of Korra.

However, I think the reason they did that and then showed Iroh producing his own fire was that the plan would be to show fire benders had lost the ability and only those who learned firebending from dragons (the original source) could produce their own fire. After Aang and Zuko visit the dragons it implies that got better bending but you never really get a feel for it after the episode. Good vid. I can agree with most of the points you made. I can also stress the point about back story being better off left as a mystery. Ever hear of a film called Highlander? After the main character finds out he is an immortal, he asks his mentor, "How does this happen?" a very normal question to ask. The answer he gets is pure speculation on his mentor's part, amounting to "Who knows?" Its a mystery, we dont need to solve to enjoy the film. In fact, not knowing is better than any specific answer might be. It is much better than the lame ass answer we are given in a sequel. Which brings me back to the actual point, a sequel is a dangerous thing because not only can it suck or fall short of the original, it can introduce things that screw up the entire story. ( yea Korra, you had some good parts, but . . . )

Since the Airbenders are based on Tibetan monks, there is a belief in their religion where they can use Astral Projection and since Avatar is based on East Asian cultures, than they likely used their beliefs as to why Airbenders can use Astral Projection. Similarly, the Waterbenders seem to resemble the Hawaiians in their spiritual fundamentalism which also means that the writers also took their spiritual beliefs quite literally.

The short answer is they wrote the original with a larger team of writers and didnt bring them all back for korra... then in korra the people they picked tried to stuff in topics and bending while simultaneously copying and moving away from the first to the point of betraying the core themes established by the first. The live action show does this again but applies ot to the first series itself again changing the tone and characters to make the show fit into a mold that it never belonged in at the expense of what worked for it. 5:23 - 'The whole point of sokkas sexism was to show that it was wrong'. No it wasn't. This is a very narrow and modern view, and this is what led to bad writing desicision as we see in the live action version. Sokka learned that some women can be capable of fighting. But him being 'sexist' served a much deeper purpose. It showed us that cultures in this world recognise sex differences, - which is realistic. Sokkas foundation is his father, and the need and wish to become like his father, and act as a protector of the tribe. This challenges him to act like a warrior from a childhood age, and not to let himself feel weak. He was the ONLY MALE in the watertribe for like 6 years, apart from babies and the elderly. He took on his sex-role and that defined his early development. That is juicy juicy character material and worldbuilding. His assertions that girls cant and don't fight arent merely 'sexism' that has to be scolded. It shows his culture and his personal experience, and also shows he trying to overcompensate and take on all the weight of combat - even though he's not properly trained. Trying to be strong despite your vulnerability is why sokka is likable, and its also an exploration of his masculinity. His mother was killed because she was believed to be a waterbender - OF COURSE Sokka would wish females (especially katara) to be out of combats way! His 'sexism' here relates to his guilt over his mother dying. Later Sokka comments that he struggled to remember his mother, and thinks of Katara instead, showing that for a long time Sokka has recognised Kataras capability as a motherly figure. So him seeing his Mother in Katara, of course makes him dead set on protecting her by keeping her out of combat. He later meets Suki, who is the same age (almost) as katara, so of course Sokka asserts that girls shouldn't be in combat, and he tried to overcompensate by suggesting he is more capable. Let's get over superficial oppression-theory lenses and look at the multipurpose nature of this writing decision. Also we later see, via Hama, that because women fought in the South, they were killed or captured, leading to so few adults - few women - actually surviving to continue the tribe and keep its number up. The show directly demonstrates that too much allowances of female warriors causes societal maintenance problems.

But seriously... how many Batman films, shows, etc, have there been? ...and only like 6 of them are considered universally great. I'm just saying, there has been a lot of really good ATLA content since the original series ended, including the recent live-action, LoK, and many comics. Sure, there have been abominations, like the 2010 film... but back to Batman as an example... ever seen the 1997 Batman and Robin? ...yeah... I rest my case. I've watched a dozen reactions to season 1 of the original series... and most are a solid meh... it's not until season 2 that people get hooked, and not until season 3 that people proclaim it's epic... only to go back and re-watch season 1, and be so impressed with the world-building they overlook everything that made them go "meh" the first time. Personally, I'm just glad it's not more mcu, Spiderman, Superman, or Batman.

10:10 - You know, I actually like the idea of most firebenders not being able to create their own fire. None of the other benders are self-generating. It would create a nice weakness for most firebenders and that would be reflected culturally - firebender groups would carry around lanterns, and braziers, and there would probably be a special position within every battalion called the 'Fire Bearer'. When I think about it - if all firebenders can create their own flames easily, then why would the Fire nation even bother to manufacture lanterns and candles at all? Only non-benders would need such things, which would culturally mean that it would be looked down on to need lanterns and candles, as it shows you are inferior.

Honestly I agree with most of your takes in this video, but personally I think that the choice of seeing more and more characters capable of sub-bending in Korra was deliberate and it makes sense with the established worldbuilding. If you think about it, in the many years that have passed between Aang and Korra, the entire world has undergone literally an entire Industrial revolution. This means more education more easily accessible to everyone. In ATLA we see that the Northern Water Tribe is very strict in choosing who to teach, and Fire Nation only discloses some of the techniques to nobles and members of the royal family. Even the Earth nation is mostly poor because of the war. So while in ATLA these sub-bendings are only accessible to prodigies like Toph or Katara, it makes sense that in a world like Korra's where kids are taught to bend from childhood the average level is generally higher and this allows more people to sub-bend. With this being said, the way these sub-bendings are trated is completely another thing, and the use of metal bending does feel a little bit simplified and overused, especially in the first season.

We dont know that the average person cant in the last airbender but its probably a taboo? Which, makes sense if you just did add suuch a thing that the royal family did ban it to anyone else. Which honestly something Zuko showed the veterans to go work in republic city would suffiive. Why shouldnt metalbending not have envolved for that police, and artistic practices. Toph started it, not being the be all end all.Hell Tenzin did do that badass air scoozter mode. Oh and how is it udoing, the liontrutles, are from avatar, and the liontrutles giving a basic ability tha thinned out and yeah they learned from the spirits.

The thumbnail comparing TLoK to two failed live actions is a bit drastic. Korra was great on its own merits.

Korra's amazing 😭 I guess I'm biased bc I watched that b4 the original Avatar series when I was younger, but I really dont get the hate, especially here with the 2010 movie and Netflix remake as being "worse". Thumbnail is crazy

Really nice video🙏 but the insecure part at the end is doing more harm than good...Why give us reasons to doubt the quality of your product, when you made a perfectly interesting video? I would even love to listen to you elaborate for longer! Just keep doing what you're doing and have fun with it:)

Bro @26:00 you make a point i kinda disagree with. Remember in the original series Bumi could psychically bend the earth to free himself from his metal cage on the day of black sun? I think its fair for some water benders to be able to achieve that too with good practice.

That and he assumed that bending is only possible because they mentioned learning it from animal in the world when we see that there are people that can't do bending in the original series. What they meant that they learnt the bending martial arts and not the ability to bend. I just don't get how people ignore that fact. Because by the logic mentioned in the video it would mean everyone could learn to bend when the original series shows otherwise.

i get your point but the thing that makes blood bending cool is the creepy and unsettling hand movements and the fact that you need an amp to be able to do it, the fact that like 4 characters can do bluetooth blood bending without even moving an inch AND without a full moon is stupid, it would be significantly better if we got an explanation for how he stumbled upon that ability or SHOW us how powerful he was to be able to do that.

Reading the comments, I can see why Avatar lost its way. You don't design by committee. There's a difference between what you find acceptable / understandable and what constitutes strong design choices with sound verisimilitude. By the logic of some of these people, a Chevy and a Ferrari is the same because they are both cars that take you from point A to point B. It's precisely these kinds of fans that lead unsure storytellers and anxious production companies astray. People do not realize that when they do not question why every firebender and their grandmas can lightning bend, it quickly destroys airtight worldbuilding. The bending was not a mere means to an end, the original team avatar and their enemies were gearing up for a final battle, those talents were in the realm of geniuses and also those who were open minded enough to learn about the other benders. Toph was able to metalbend, BECAUSE she was blind. Her reliance on "earth" was so strong and along with having the most stubborn personality of all the characters in the story, it ALLOWED her to achieve a new height. It's not something you are supposed to be able to just teach anyone. A bunch of rando fire benders producing electricity for the city with lightning bending does not stop for a second to ask why that would even be necessary in a world where fire can be conjured out of the air. You can just use combustion as the main mode of energy use, not electricity. We only did that in OUR world because we found fire to be inefficient and dangerous.

I think a lot of your takes are pretty valid but saying LOK is worse than the live action movie is not something I will be taking up for discussion and any attempt to is say so is nostalgia for ATLA

They did do a good Avatar show with Korra, otherwise it wouldn't have had a huge loyal following even after over a whole decade lol. Just cos it wasnt good to u and majority of the ATLA fandom doesn't mean everybody hated it And don't get me wrong ATLA is definitely a timeless classic but i still prefer ATLOK to it Different strokes for different folks

People can like Korra all they wantz but you have to admit on narrative and character driven level it doesn't hold up to The Last Airbender.

good video :) had the same thoughts about LoK and never wanted to watch it a second time. In my head its not canon because most of the additions they thought of are just breaking the existing lore. AtlA is so special and unique in its direction and writing and espcially the dark spirit thing, the "if you are born a prodigy you can bend with your mind", Korra loosing the connections to all her past lives, the dissconection and drama of the lead characters and the unpleasant ent-glorification of our past heroes made it so unbearable to watch at times. Its not a bad show but it redcons to many things that made AtlA special. I wish we could have a sequel that followed the already established rules and storyline but I fear the next series will stray more and more from the original. But lets see ^^

NGL for anyone who has gripes with Korra, go watch the Captains review on why Korra isn't actually that bad. Did it have issues? Sure, mostly due to constantly being green lit for only one season and forced to pump that season out under threat of cancelation, and partly due to the weird season orders (S2 shouldve been the end of series based on villain alone); however it certainly better than people pretend it is.

I watched the movie before I got the chance to watch the show, and I personally don’t think anything could top or even live up to the original. The movie doesn’t work as a movie, let alone an adaptation. I forgot everything about the movie a few hours after I watched it, but Avatar has stuck with me until today. For Legend of Korra, it could definitely be better, but it’s ok-ish as a show. I stopped watching it after the Zaheer arc. I do feel like it fell flat outside of a few things.

Lol i'm sorry but I have to agree with all this. For me the M Night film is more something to laugh at so I find value in it that way but that's about it. I didn't even bother watching the netflix adaptation. As for LOK, I resent it because it had so much potential but the writing... the undoing of what was established before... the characters... the corny villain/theme of the season format... season 2 as a whole 💀 and I have zero interest in the whole twin avatars/ 7 havens show concept going around

@@gentwhoisoverit6992 lol yes, I was really excited about Korra and first watch through I kinda liked it but felt this weird uneasy feeling, I started to realize its issues the more I rewatched it. I’d give the seven havens a chance also, I was really worried after all these bad installments they’ve been making, but I wouldn’t write it off so soon, give it a season at least
