Doctor Who Series 14 Soundtrack: The Darkness of 15

Mind you, this is not the Doctor's darkness. It's the Doctor witnessing the darkness and not being able to bring light.

I'd have called this "Sometimes, Everybody Dies." I don't think it's a darkness more like a futility, a frustration. The Doctor has the light, right there, and they refuse, ironically turning right around into the darkness.

The way it fades out at 4:27 and comes back in mid-chord progression makes me think that Murray scored the whole scene all the way through and the editor decided the Doctor's rage moment would be more powerful unscored (it was BTW). This was a common occurrence with Murray as evidenced, for example, with all the extra material from the Heaven Sent soundtrack that appeared on the Series 9 soundtrack release. That means that an eventual Season One release may bridge these two bits of music, but that's only if Murray ever feels up to releasing soundtracks again.

Notice at the end of this, there's a slightly darker, more sombre version of 'The Long Song', what once was a theme of The Doctor giving his greatest speech now plays again in a moment where The Doctor realizes there's no speech under the sun that'll get Lindy and her friends to listen to him.

I don’t think that’s intended as a variation. It’s just that the cadence at the end sounds similar. The melody’s not nearly the same nor are the chords before the cadence.

@@PaulAndroid I could see it being true, while it's not an exact match to the Long Song it is very similar. Gold has been pulling from his previous themes he wrote for the show all season so it's not that far of a reach

@@timbeard4466 Look up the Rings of Akhaten Doctor speech, the chorus with the lyrics "wake up" sounds similar to the end when the racists are sailing away (starts at 4:30 in this video)

@@The0thDoctor Murray Gold had spoken about the Series 10 soundtrack release in April and November 2023 and he said: "it will come out. That’s an exclusive. The Series 10 album will see the light of day. By hook or by crook." We can expect the official releases to come out at some point, we'll just have to wait

I really dont get why people are calling this "the dark 15 theme" or anything even close to that, that plays in a scene where he shows HOW GOOD he is, how much he is the doctor, people being horrile and he is still trying to save them. He just gets angry because he CAN'T make this people change their minds to save them. for me, this isn't "the darkness of 15" but the more like a sad theme, a song for his defeat, somethign really sad not "dark". Maybe I'm associanting Darkness with evil or those "angry doctor threats people" moments.

i dont think 15 himself was being dark in the moment either, but the actual theme has a more dark twist to it imo, more so than sad

it's not his own darkness at all, i agree. it's more like the Doctor witnessing darkness and not being able to bring light.

This episode brought the magic of Doctor Who back for me. I know Boom was incredible, but seeing the Doctor faced with the fact that his new regeneration, due to humanity's ignorance and prejudice, will in fact be a huge problem for him. (Note that i use he/him because the Doctor's regenerations separately identify their genders.) Seeing the Doctor faced with a heart breaking moral dilemma with no clear conclusion, with Murray Gold's score swelling in the background.. thats Doctor Who.
