I honestly love Deep Breath, it's one of my favorite episodes of NuWho to rewatch. There are some hilarious moments in it with Strax, Clara and the Doctor and the scene during the climax where the Doctor takes Clara's hand and she's about to pass out is so well done. And Capaldi staring into the camera after the half faced man falls at the very end still gives me chills.

into the dalek is actually one of all time favorite capaldi episodes, for several reasons. While what it does with the daleks isn't particularly interesting or new, what i really love is it's exploration of capaldi character. The way he acts so coldly when people have to die-- there's this one scene where one of the soldiers going in with him is targeted by the dalek antibodies and the doctor doesn't even TRY to save him because he knows it's such a lost cause. The way he interacts with the daleks shows a harshness that we haven't really seen in the doctor in a long time, and i feel it's a strong departure from the flashy loverboy appeal of tennant and smith that shows him as an older, more traumatized man who's really seen some shit. All in all, i thought it was a really really good second episode, as it built on his character established in deep breath in a way many second episodes just totally fail to do.

I know Series 8 tends to get a bad-rep, but I've always found it to be a highly underrated series that came at the right time for me when it first aired. I was dealing with two family bereavements that year and I definitely needed something to get me excited and optimistic again, and this series accomplished that for me. Plus, after having been disappointed by both Series 6 and 7, this revitilised the show for me and restored faith in it again. I thought it was a good strong start to the Capaldi Era with some excellent stories and a great dynamic between 12 and Clara. 12 promised we were going "into darkness", and we sure did. I loved the deep, complex angle Moffat took with the Doctor/companion dynamic, and the introduction to Michelle Gomez's Master was brilliantly handled. On the negative side, I thought Danny and his relationship with Clara weren't as fleshed out as it could've been, despite having a strong send-off, and I do think the three episodes in The Caretaker, Kill the Moon and In the Forest of the Night were the roughest patch, not just of this series, but of the whole Capaldi Era. Despite those issues, Series 8 was a solid start that would only get even better with Series 9, which is still my personal favourite series of Modern Who. My ranking of Series 8 would probably go like this: 1. Mummy on the Orient Express 2. Listen 3. Flatline 4. Dark Water/Death in Heaven 5. Last Christmas 6. Deep Breath 7. Robot of Sherwood 8. Into the Dalek 9. Time Heist 10. The Caretaker 11. Kill the Moon 12. In the Forest of the Night

My thoughts on series 8 have honestly been all over the place ever since it aired, but for the last year or two I think I've finally been pretty comfortable with the idea that it's actually a really solid series as a whole that has a couple distinctly bad episodes, and a couple distinctly great ones. I think part of my appreciation comes from hindsight, and the fact that I've actually grown to like Clara as a character compared to my unwarranted dislike of her at the time. Considering the two series before it, S6 was quite an inconsistent bunch of good and bad episodes and ideas, which was fun but frustrating, and got overcomplicated in what it was trying to do - on the other hand, you have S7, which is consistent, but consistently bad. There's great moments and ideas at play, and I'd consider a few episodes to be good and enjoyable, but on the whole it was a let-down and one of my least favourites. Coming after that, S8 is so refreshing, and manages to drop most of the baggage of 11's era even despite keeping his companion. My ranking: 1 - Mummy on the Orient Express 2 - Flatline 3 - Robot of Sherwood 4 - Time Heist 5 - Dark Water/Death in Heaven 6 - Listen 7 - The Caretaker 8 - Deep Breath 9 - Into the Dalek 10 - Kill the Moon 11 - In the Forest of the Night

Doctor Who is so fascinating because pretty much no fan has a similar list, myself, I found Mummy on the Orient Express and the two part finale to be my most hated doctor who episodes...until series 11 and 12 blew that out of the water haha but nevertheless, its just so cool to see all the different opinions. It was nice to hear someone share my opinion on Robot of Sherwood though, that was quite refreshing.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who's fond of Death in Heaven. It's definitely my second favourite finale of the Moffat era. I also really don't get Listen. I think S8 isn't a bad season, it's overall pretty solid with some highlights. For me, it's the Jamie Matheson episodes that really stand out, Into the Dalek is probably the best Dalek story of the Moffat era (pretty much by default though really), and up until S8 I don't think I'd really enjoyed any finale in the Moffat era. It's overall, pretty good. I like it more than S9, probably not as much as 10...I also like the Caretaker.

I recently re-watched this season for the first time and generally found myself enjoying almost every episode a lot more this time around. Even Kill The Moon was fun on a re-watch - I think the first half of it has the makings of a really good episode, it just doesn't follow through. But it does speak to Capaldi's skills that he manages to sell the 'the moon is an egg' speech so well despite how dumb it is.

Series 8 did feel like a return to form, and like Moffat was going back to the Russel T. Davies style of season vs. what he was cooking up. But like it, it was still very inconsistent, and I personally don't feel its good episodes are as great as the great episodes from past seasons. I normally don't bother ranking them, but my list varies, so here we go: 1. Listen: I felt how you did the first time I saw it, but upon re-watch, part of what I like is that you could read it both ways. Maybe there is a monster we never see, maybe there's nothing. I liked it 2. Flatline: This felt like a remake of "Fear Her", one of the worst DW episodes and it does it so much better. The monsters are creative and scary, Clara has to work on her own with the Doctor sidelined (but still present), and it leads to a great finale. The only thing holding it back for me are the weak side characters. 3. Kill The Moon: Yup. I went there. Yes, that ending is prepostrous, but I liked the idea of the Doctor just leaving humanity to itself to make its own choice. And I also really like how Clara told him off for at the end. The only problem is that she immediately gets back with him the next episode, and that hurts it for me. They should have had an episode where it was just her or just him before reuiniting. 4. Mummy on The Orient Express: I like it fine too, for all the reasons you said. Honestly, what I don't like is how it followed Kill The Moon and undercut the harshness of that ending. Like, yeah it's not completely ignored, but it practically is... 5. Dark Water/Death in Heaven: I want to like this more than I do because it feels way grander than some of the overbloated finales Moffat's done before even though it does less. Killing off Danny (twice if you think about it) was genuinely surprising and I still feel bad about it. Missy's reveal is great, and upon rewatch, it's great watching her basically troll everyone all the time. But I don't feel all the elements come together. The cybermen don't actually do much, and especially in the 2nd part, not much actually happens. Still fun and exciting finale though. 6. Robot of Sherwood: This one's just fun. I agree it's a bit underrated; again it reminds me of the Russel T. Davies history episodes. The only thing holding it back for me is that the actual sci-fi element is super forgetful. 7. Time Heist: I want to like this one more than I do cause I love heists. But for me, it misses that part where the crew actually gets to plan the heist. In this case, the "architect" plans everything for them and they just march forward hoping to stumble into the next objective, which isn't as fun. 8. Into the Dalek: I agree that it is ultimately pretty derivative of other stories they've done. But it's solid enough. 9. Deep Breath: I actually really don't care for this one. It doesn't showcase what Capaldi has to offer as a Doctor that well, and it's weird bringing up the Vastra crew for the intro when this is their last episode. This one also borrows elements from "Girl in the Fireplace" but doesn't do anything interesting with them. 10. The Caretaker: I don't hate this one, to be honest there's elements from other episodes that bug me more higher up on this list. Unlike those, I just can't think of anything I like. I do like how they develop Danny and Clara's relationship, but it needed a stronger episode to build around that. 11. The Forest of the Night: This one annoys me because it's a terrific premise. What if a forest grew overnight? What would change? What would the world be like? How did this happen? Who would do this? Ultimately though, it leads nowhere interesting. It's all too vague how this happened and who's behind it (and not in an interesting way like "Listen"), and we only stick with our small group of people. I like the idea that it was all done shield the earth from a flare, but ultimately, it means the characters didn't have to do anything. They could have just sat by and camped in these woods all day, and the same result would have happened.

I'm one of those who would rank Robot of Sherwood towards the bottom. I wasn't drawn in. Also it was altered following some horrendous terrorist incident in RL at the time. I saw a work print of the original version, in which there was in fact a robot (not saying who). I found it had a much better ending; perhaps I would have placed it one notch up from where I'd put the broadcast one. Some differences. Certainly the worst and best we're in sync :) Still regardless, always interesting to see another perspective & always worth a thumbs up.

Whilst it's cool that I only hate the bottom two episodes (usually a lot more in most seasons), it's a shame that there's not a single story I _love._ Just a lot of "That's fine" or, at best, "That's good." The fact that Listen made it to number one is very strange since I'm highly critical of that episode, but kinda says it all for this series. Probably the only story with ambition. Love how consistent Series 8 is, I just wish there were one or two truly great stories. Every other series has at least one! (Except for Series 7. Which is fittingly my least favourite.)

While I think series 9 was a better series overall, I adored Series 8. At the time, I didn't get BBC America, so I'd buy a season pass on Amazon, and the new episodes would post at 3 am on Sunday morning, which I would wake up to watch as soon as possible. There was only one episode I flat out disliked. Onto the rankings! 11) In the Forest of the Night - Just a boring, dull episode. I think the biggest knock against it is that the problem solved itself, without any action from The Doctor, Clara or Danny. 10) The Caretaker - Not fantastic, but also not bad. The monster was goofy, but the gag of the Doctor thinking the guy who looked kinda like Matt Smith was Clara's boyfriend was amusing. 9) Into the Dalek - A fun episode, though it did tread on well worn ground. Nothing glaringly wrong with it, just not super original. 8) Robot of Sherwood - This episode was a hoot and a half. The fact that it's this low is not a knock against it, but a testament to how much I enjoyed the rest of series 8. Lots of good humor, and building up The Doctor as a myth was a nice thematic touch. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention that Clara's costume was adorable. 7) Deep Breath - Outside the underuse of the T-Rex, there's not much to complain about this episode. It may not have been on the level of The Eleventh Hour in terms of a new Doctor's first story, but it was stronger than The Christmas Invasion or The Woman Who Fell to Earth. 6) Dark Water & Death in Heaven - Just a fantastic finale. Loved the nod to Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart at the end. One of the stronger Cybermen stories since the revival. After the Cybermen kind of devolved into jokes during the 10th & 11th Doctor runs, it was good to see them menacing again. (And they only got better in The World Enough & Time and The Doctor Falls. 5) Time Heist - Just fantastic fun from beginning to end. Love the supporting characters and The Teller was such a great monster. 4) Flatline - One thing that I loved about the 12th Doctor and Clara's relationship was that Clara began to emulate The Doctor and began showing a lot of confidence and hubris. This got her in trouble later, but this seems to be the first steps of that. The 2D monsters were creative, and the shrinking Tardis bit led to some really fun interactions. 3) Listen - The scene where Clara and little Danny are under the bed is just fantastic, chilling, and creepy. Capaldi is in top form in this episode, and while it could be said that Clara has had too much of an impact on The Doctor between The Name of the Doctor and this episode, I thought her talking with the young Doctor was really sweet. 2) Mummy on the Orient Express - The sense of melancholy between Clara and The Doctor at the beginning of the episode was played beautifully between Capaldi and Coleman, and I agree with all the points made in the video. Just a fantastic episode of Doctor Who. 1) Kill the Moon - I make no apologies for how much I love this episode. From the Doctor's yo-yo, to the fact that The Doctor stepped back to let humanity decide what to do with the moon, to the self-righteous indignation Clara felt towards The Doctor, this episode really resonated with me. I feel it's one of Jenna-Louise Coleman's strongest performances, and the ending didn't bother me at all. Doctor Who, much like Star Wars, always seemed to lean more into the Science-Fantasy realm than the hard Science-Fiction of Star Trek, so the Dragon laying an egg at the end didn't bother me one bit.

A lot of this season has a weird issue in that they start of really strong and then fall apart. A few examples: Listen has a fantastic intro and the bit with young Danny is my favourite Clara scene. Then they abandon that and jump into the future? Flat line is cool until the monsters are explained Time Heist is really interesting until the twist becomes obvious with The Doctor walking around going "Hmmmm I wOndEr wHo the ArchItEct Is?" And so on, most episodes are so close to being amazing DW.

This might be an unpopular opinion but I think you could cut the first 30 minutes of Deep Breath and it would be much better. It's a decent 45 minute story with 30 minutes of waffle at the start. I honestly don't think there's a single Doctor Who episode that needs to be longer than 45 minutes. Even Heaven Sent could have lost at least 5 minutes

Oh, yeah. Act 2 starts with the Doctor and Clara meeting in the restaurant. The following 25 minutes are pure gold, perfect opener stuff. Either cut down Act 1 to 15 minutes (easily enough done) or...cut down Act 2 and 3 to 15 minutes and add it to the beginning of Into the Dalek!! With a bit of tinkering, it's the perfect hour long opener!! Someone's already made that edit, you should check it out.

I'm wracking my my brain trying to think of an episode that would benefit from being longer. So far all I've got is The Girl In The Fireplace cos they could have used that time to get us more invested in the romance. Other than that, I don't know. I just think of shows like Bojack Horseman or RTD's 'Banana' that tell these complex, moving stories in half an hour. Or stuff like Game Of Thrones or the Marvel Netflix shows which have about half an hour of great content and pad it with half an hour of people mumbling in dark rooms.

He was the series producer at the time, and read all the scripts, and okayed it for production. If he didn't like it, he could have vetoed it and went with something else. So yeah, he kinda was responsible.

For the most part, I would still put In the Forest of the Night at the bottom. Kill the moon is actually pretty good up until the reveal of the moon as an egg 🙄 (of course at that point it all turns to crap), and while I didn't find much to like about The Caretaker, it's not terrible, but In the Forest of the Night is just dreadful and doesn't have any good parts. Other than that, I suppose I would rank Listen higher, but I do have to agree that the execution doesn't quite live up to the premise.

I'm one of those people who feel like Robots of Sherwood is ranked too high in this list, but I get you. The banter is fun. The episode as a whole just irks me. I don't like the notion that just because The Doctor is a "legend" that means other "legends" are real too. Maybe if Robin Hood hadn't been so spot on to the stories. It really pulled me out of it. Plus having the Doctor be so obsessive with proving himself right about Robin Hood just comes across too unlikeable to me. Like, I get not believing right away, but there comes a point where his denial is just too overblown. Again, fun banter, but the rest just irks me too much. Kind of like how Listen irks you. ;P I'd probably put this where Listen is on your list and shift the others all up one space, but that's just me. :P

I always think it would be better if she killed that thing in the moon.We would not have found out whether it was avoidable(hope it is the right word, I am not grow up with english). If she killed it, we do not know if it was right, we only know what is now buried in the moon: A Baby. If i watch this Series for the first Time, i really do not like it, because of some bad Episodes and the bad background story and Mr Pink and the relationship between Clara and 12, but today I think it have some great Episodes and Capaldi is the Best.

11. Kill the Moon (awful science, boring supporting characters, a badly handled moral argument, a major lack of consequences, Clara going ballistic at the end is the only good scene) 10. In the Forest of the Night (less offensively bad than KTM, mostly kind of boring) 9. The Caretaker (a couple of fun one-liners from the Doctor, but largely forgettable) 8. Into the Dalek (pretty fun, but very lacking in original ideas) 7. Robot of Sherwood (loads of fun, great guest cast, with a lovely final scene between the Doctor and Robin) 6. Time Heist (fun supporting cast, a creative monster, and an interesting spin on the heist format) 5. Deep Breath (first half is quite weak, second half is excellent, great development for Clara, and a strong introduction for the Twelfth Doctor) 4. Dark Water/Death in Heaven (great introduction for Missy, excellent performance from Capaldi, great direction and soundtrack, would be higher if I cared about Clara and Danny) 3. Listen (great atmosphere, fantastic performances, loads of interesting ideas, admittedly overrated but still great) 2. Flatline (wonderfully creepy and creative visuals, some great character development for Clara, and some great new monsters) 1. Mummy on the Orient Express (a building sense of tension, great guest characters, and strong character devleopment for the Doctor, it's a modern classic)

I actually hated Clara going crazy at the end of Kill the Moon. She’s been acting like she’s the Doctor practically since she met the Doctor. He finally gives her what she wants most, hands her complete control of the situation, and she can’t handle it. So she takes it out on him. WTF? Jenna is an AMAZING actor. And with any companion BUT Clara, it would have been a fascinating dynamic to explore. It’s a great scene that they executed well. It just made me look at Clara like she was an asshole.

I think Kill the Moon handles moral analogies the way sci-fi should - literally taking it out into space and stripping away our terrestrial biases. For example, in real life we often defend the subjugation of one people over another out of ethno-religious-national loyalty, but in sci-fi we always sympathise with the aliens being oppressed. In this case gender is one of the factors removed from the moral argument. The conclusions as such are well balanced - one pro choice (the humans vote pro-choice when men are in the pregnant role as much as women), the other pro life (right or wrong, the desire to protect new life at the expense of the self-determination of existing life, comes from a place of compassion and is relatable). Overall - the episode leaves one confused as to how you are supposed to feel about what happened - entirely appropriate for such a complex issue, and much better than being told what to think word for word. The doctor vanishing mid-way through and leaving us to grapple with the situation is a perfect metaphor for this. On an unrelated note - the way the moon behaves is mathematically possible if you accept a mathematical principle called the "Axiom of Choice" - in this context it is more amusing than incredulous. See the wikipedia article on the Banach-Tarski paradox.

It’s a fun episode! Doesn’t take itself seriously (something series 8 did a lot). Clara is adorable, and likable, and acting like a companion. She and the Doctor aren’t being total assholes to each other. Danny’s not much involved. What’s not to like?

I'm new to Who. Started with the 9th doctor and just finished series 8. Id say I fully agree with your ranking (Mummy was my high point as well). However these episodes as a whole were kinda off-putting to me. Am I the only one who thinks the writing was laughable a lot of the time? Although she was okay in the first episodes she was introduced......... I just really can't stand Clara anymore. The only thing that I can say about her character is that she's an opinionated, controlling, pretentious Mary Sue. Other than that she has no character traits. And what's worse is she's wildly inconsistent in her motives. Very unpredictable, but in a bad way. Again, detracting from any kind of foundational character or arc. Actually both her AND Danny, even though he was introduced as shy and insecure. They come off as majorly self righteous, a lot of the time speaking down to the Doctor as if he's done something wrong, when he's only ever saved the universe time and time again. So what he doesn't like Daleks? He shouldn't. Yet they all treat him (even random kids that pop in for an episode) like he's the bane of their existence, and they're all SO much wiser than him, when most, if not all the time, the problem being faced was caused by something beyond the Doctor's control. Sometimes even by the human characters themselves. Sigh. Am I missing something? The episodes are written like the audience is supposed to be empathizing with this annoyance towards the doctor, yet I'm just like.... Doctor please kick this wack-o off the Tardis. New companion please. Clara and Danny aside there's still other writing flaws in this series, but I feel like they were the most obvious to me. Capaldi is pretty great. Love how dry he portrays his emotions. Makes some great humorous moments. And I'll tell you what... even though I know Clara comes back, that ending to the final episode was SPOT ON. The unceremonious goodbye, with the Doctor's lackluster responses, ending in Clara walking off to a hard cut to credits. It was perfect to me lol. I just wish she didn't come back.... But oh well. Maybe she's written better in the 9th series? Guess I'll see. Anyway, rant over.

Rewatching serie 8 I have to admit that really is not really better than the infamous serie 11. In both there half of episodes that are forgettable or fine at least. BUT the thing that works better is the dynamics between characters. Even if I hate Clara, she works perfectly with Twelve, the two actors have a perfect chemestry. Jenna is at ease with her character and Capaldi is simply the best. I feel safe saying that maybe the biggest problem of Chibnall Era is not (only) really the writing but the chemestry between the actors and the fact that they feel not at ease with their characters. I mean, a bad writing can be saved with a good chemestry between characters (Examples especially in S1-S2-S3-S6-S8) but not the other way round.
