I was around about 6 the first time I watched this. The water monsters scared the hell out of me. I was legit terrified. But then the Doctor went mental with his little time lord victorious rampage. And I didn't watch Tennant for ages. I couldn't bring myself to do it.

I can't say that I loved it, but it definitely was a new perspective on The Doctor and Time Lords in general. It made me see how good The Doctor really is, because he only went off the deep end for about 30 minutes before he realized how terrible he could become.

The way Davies ended that episode was brilliant; the Doctor was still sort of doing the right thing morally, but at the same time the way he kept talking about the laws of time being his and whether or not people died was his privilege to decide was just the right amount of creepy. So cleverly done; when the rescue is in progress it's as though the Doctor is just saving the day as normal, but then afterwards you realise that the consequences of it were really messed. Still waiting for Moffat to do anything close to that on his own.

Those TARDIS noises just made it even better. The Tardis never took the Doctor where he wanted to go, but to where he needed to be. The TARDIS brought him to Rose, Sarah Jane, Martha and all the other companions. It proves how much the TARDIS doesn't want The doctor to be alone, and we are not talking about a machine here.

I *love* how the Doctor becomes full of himself after the rescue, because you can tell deep down his conscience is screaming that he's made a horrible mistake and he's so scared he tries to cover it up with his ego. David Tennant was a great Doctor...he portrayed the character of him excellently. David's Doctor wore his heart on his sleeve and that is the exact kind of person I imagine the Doctor to be-the pain and the loneliness always showing through, even in his happiest moments, because he knows that the happy times will eventually end. In addition, he did a wonderful job of showing the dark side of the Doctor-his performance towards the end of this episode was powerful and sad all at once, and it actually made you fear the Doctor. ...Put simply, I believe that the Tenth Doctor was the most human of them.

I think Ten was a great character because we truly cared about him and how he felt. When you don't care about a character enough, the writers/actors are not doing their work right, IMO. It was about time we had a more realistic and relatable Doctor. Besides, Ten also had his moments when he could be really alien and Timelordy ("Family of Blood, Satan Pit). But overall, he was a Doctor who loved and lost so much. His story was mesmerising and truly compelling to me and many others. Job well done.

I was scared of Tennant at the end of this episode, there was no one who could stop him from what he was doing, he defied the laws of time by changing a fixed point in time, and for the first time, openly admitted that he had the ultimate power and control over time itself. Agreed, and this is why this music makes me feel so sad; you can feel through it the Doctor's utter pain, isolation and desperation. For the first time in the Entire Ten run, we got to see the true extent of his power, and it didn't even scratch the surface of how powerful he was. In The Last of the Time Lords/The Sound of Drums, he seems almost powerless because the Master had him in a birdcage. But this proved how much self control he had over his power. If the Doctor ever goes to the dark side, he'll make the Master look like a perfect saint...

Tennant (especially in The Waters of Mars) is a perfect example of how a Dark Doctor should be. We only got a glimpse of this in season 4 but I was hoping that we would see more in season 8, considering we were told that Capaldi would be a dark doctor. And all we ended up getting was annoying, cheesy, meaningless dialogue, witty comebacks and a crappy storyline. Really disappointed with season 8.

***** I think Moffat needs to leave the show and stop being the showrunner. Fair enough his high point was season 6/50th anniversary but the only way Doctor Who has managed to survive 50 years is the Doctors clever ability to change face/actor, prompting the show to reinvent itself over and over again and bring in several eras of new originality letting others make their mark on the show. I think Moffat should've left when Capaldi came in, just like Russel T Davis left when Tennant left so i think Moffats sort of overstaying his welcome and should let others bring in their own style and tone and story for Capaldi's Doctor so the Twelfth is really more defined.

When the doctor stated that he was now in control and time bends to his will, I was frightened. Just in general, to me that is way too much power for someone, even a Time Lord. I seriously would've been disappointed in the doctor if he had continued on that path. It's a huge responsibility and he's my hero because he handles it so well, despite what he goes through. So I honestly thank Captain Brooke for showing the doctor he had way too much power, and realize that it's a responsibility.

Are you bloody kidding!? Madness is a wonderful trait for villains to have. It makes a perfect foil. Making the Master an insane, twisted psychopath makes him unpredictable and... freaky. But more than that, he's likable. Like it or not, he is. That's what makes Darth Vader and Voldemort so iconic; the fact that you love to hate them. You semi-root for them. You revel in the villainry, enjoying it, but still like it when they are defeated.

I actually like how the TARDIS engine is hinted in there just before the 2 minute mark; I think it adds to the song a bit. Makes it a bit more eerily beautiful imo.

@PhoenixWormwood137 I agree. Also, remember The Doctor is "supposed" to have something of a dark edge to him. Way back in The Trial Of A Time Lord, The Valeyard is supposed to be the manifestation of everything dark and/or possibly evil about The Doctor who comes somewhere between The Doctor's 12th incarnation and his 13th and final incarnation somehow. I don't know what Steven Moffat got planned for the franchise but it's gonna be big. Personally I want him to bring The Master or The Rani back.

This is very true. also, matt Smith's portrayal of the the doctor is similar in a different way. all the years he has lived has finally caught up with him and he's realised it. Now, he just wants to travel the universe with a friend, but if his friends get into trouble, he will do whatever it takes to save him/her.

I wasn't a huge Smith fan to begin with either, but this latest season is so amazing. I loved A Town Called Mercy and The Angels Take Manhattan. They were beautiful. But yes, I do miss Tennant, and sorely hope he comes back for the 50th anniversary special.

the more you think about it, the more you realize this episode is VERY similar to the movie Interstellar. the soundtrack, being on another planet to colonize it, dealing with time and changing the future, etc.

@woolwichlad The Valeyard is stated to be the Doctor at some point between his 12th and 13th regenerations, so presuming he is still canon, we won't see him for a while.

It is a person saying that he is God, and having the power to carry out his will and project it across the timeline. It is the difference between a guardian and a commander. Mind you its also a bit of where the Doctor is in his timestream Like 9 had came "direct" from the Time War, 10 resume his relation with Rose that 9 started and like he said in "Journey's End" that Rose helped him become a better man I think that 11 starts to be more over confidant in his reputation from 10's "Forest of the Dead" which bites him lateron

@igoteggigotchicken11 At the end of the Waters of Mars, The Tenth Doctor breaks the laws of time and changes a fixed point in time (or tries to). He basically decided that he could do whatever he wanted since he had, alone, won the Time War. It was also this event that made him realize he had to die

I didn't even remember this was in Waters of Mars; only that it accompanied the Doctor's goodbye scenes near End of Time. Very fitting. And whoa at the choir at 2:00.
