I think the “there’s always a twist at the end” song is referencing the actress who keeps appearing (WBY, TCORR, Space babies, and The Devil’s Chord) and the actress’ name is legit Susan Twist.

The main reference is that the dance in the dance routine was very popular in the sixties and was called “The Twist”. It was popularised in such songs as Let’s Twist Again.

It occurred to me after posting that, that there is also the Beatles' song Twist And Shout but I suppose they didn't want to pay for the rights.

We can thank Disney for the 4th wall breaking moments and the random musical number, both of which weren't a thing for Dr Who, as far as I can remember anyway. I look back on clips of the Eccleston through Capaldi, and yes there were goofy moments at times, but there were also a lot of serious moments and fun moments also, which to me is what makes the show good. This current stuff is just dumb.

I don’t think that’s true, Disney has probably had an influence, but I believe there has been a massive amount of meta commentary, and that is clearly part of the show that will be explained in the coming episodes

I agrees with your analysis. I also think it’s one of those things where Dr who thrives and is more creative when the budget is low and now that they have tons of funds the creativity isn’t the same. The idea of the Maestro is a good one however to me execution was lacking. I honestly think the show is lacking a good director to properly control things and I think that’s the case with the previous series. To me there has been so much over acting and under acting in episodes it’s what removes me from seeing anyone as their characters and instead just see X actor. Even David’s 14 I didn’t see him as The Doctor I just saw David trying to act. Maybe as the series goes on it will get better but the past series says otherwise. I will still watch as I don’t agree with criticism on things you haven’t seen.

A completely fair assesment. I was super let down with the 60th anniversary specials, they could of & should of been so much better than they were. I completely agree that having a smaller budget definitely requires you to be more inventive & creative with the show. This is literally why I love classic Who, because even though it's limited by it's budget the quality is showcased in the performances of the actor's & how incredibly well written the stories are.

The Devils Chord struck more of a.. ahem.. chord with me than Space Babies (which seemed to drag somewhat and was let down by the obvious snot monster reveal 🙄🙄) up until the slightly jumbled music battle - I didn't quite get the gist of how this was a way to vanquish Maestro - it seemed to be going for a music battle ala Doctor Strange 2 but didn't quite have the impact for me - however because I enjoyed the villainous performance of Jinkx I overlooked it. The downer on it for me was the all singing all dancing final scenes. Just felt a bit oddly tacked on for no reason. I'm no fan of musicals and more so this idea of adding musical theatre elements into drama shows. That said, I think it may have worked if it was integrated as the solution to defeating Maestro - i.e. the Doctor inspires humans to re-kindle the music in them and they have a big number that means Maestro is banished back to their piano / realm. Liked your review though, very fair and nicely told. 👍👍

I thought space Babies was fine, just mediocre & kinda bland. Now as for the Devil's chord Yeah, there could of been a much better & more thought out reason for the dance number at the end that made sense. Like you said with everyone needing to make music to defeat the maestro I can completely see the doctor trying to get everyone to join together, but like you said it just feels so tacked on. Like let's put this in the script cause why not, Uhhh! 😵 Thanks for watching by the way 😊💙💙👍👍

In the film 'Yellow Submarine', the Blue Meanies invade Pepperland where they destroy all music. The Beatles come to the rescue and defeat them by playing the music the Meanies hate and fear. Sound familiar Doctor Who viewers? Except Yellow Submarine wasn't shite.

Very fair review, though i liked it a bit more than you did. I am also not a fan of the musical stuff, and i hope it's not done too much. They should have just saved it for a Buffy musical type episode where it happens out of their control, which could have been quite funny if there were some classic villains involved. Now i just want to see some Daleks forced to sing, and they hate it so much they just shoot each other to end it 😂 Either way, you get a like and subscribe out of me, keep up the good work 👏

I thought space Babies was fine just mediocre. I think it's probably more enjoyable if your completely new to the show, then I would say it's an alright start. The Devil's Chord has a pretty good villain but falls flat for me because of the constant breaking of the fourth wall & the random tacked on dance number at the end.

Jinkx as the maestro is great but for me the fourth wall breaks always take me out of the episode, I also think there's a few more fun moments in space Babies, even though space Babies is bland & forgettable. I don't know there both not great. 😄

My two main issues with this episode are the fact the Maestro isnt fully explained, and the solution to banishing him kinda came out of nowhere. What they should've done is have the beatles say "since the 20s the most renowned and famous musicians have been turning up dead, and theres a rumour of the devil coming after those who try and show too much creativity and so music that shifts from the norm too much is now seen as evil and disgusting." Then at the end have the people in the EMI studios see the Maestro and know it's been defeated by the Beatles which is why they sing and dance at the end in a celebration and that inspires the Beatles to be revolutionary in their music and push the boundaries. I think this way the eoisode doesnt really change too much but it feels a LOT more sensical. The way id fix the banishing him idea is simply adding a few lines in that conversation that show the maestro giving more hints as to what banishes him.

Should have been some clues for the notes. The notes were literally just pulled out of nowhere. It was so stupid. Should have had every time he shows up it plays the notes that summoned him in the air. Then to get rid of him you play them backwards. There has always been a little bit of bullshit in the doctor coming up with solutions, but it's usually grounded in SOME reality, not just him pulling it out of his ass.

Both episodes are lite on plot & are incredibly silly but have fun moments. Space Babies is mediocre & filled with too much exposition dumps at the start. the devil's chord has a good villain but falls flat for me because cause of all the constant 4th wall breaking moments & a randomly tacked on dance number at the end that doesn't make any sense.
