The music of the show is so good, eventually it has become something even the Doctor refers to. In the Devil's Cord he says "I thought that was non diegetic" and also how Ruby's theme is in incorporated in the show. It implies that the Doctor hears the music of the show as well. I like to think that's how he remembers his companions by their music.

@@crumblesilkskin Actually the first misdirection is in the beginning that this Clara is one of the echos (out of of the many Claras that are out there)... because OG Clara had perished in Face The Raven, and Doctor was supposed to be on Gallifery. Then as the episodes proceeds, we learn that Clara was saved (rather literally taken 'out of time') by the Doctor but she probably died at some point again, and this in fact is still another Clara. Then we slowly learn that OG Clara probably lost her memories and landed here, and then the final twist being that it was the Doctor who lost his memories of Clara and this INFACT is our Clara.

Moffat’s problem was that he went too big too soon during Matt Smith’s era. I think even he admitted it somewhere in an interview. Davies was a lot better at balancing human stories with sci-fi, in my opinion (with a welcome dash of camp). Having said that, Moffat’s ideas are absolutely stellar when fully realised (Blink and Heaven Sent are some of the best examples in some ways).

I love this episode, one of my favourite finales. It's full of heart. This is the first time I've really watched this scene from Clara's point of view. The longer she's talking to him she realises he really doesn't remember her. After all the places they've been together & all the things they done together, and the Doctor doesn't even know who she is. That would have destroyed Clara inside. Also the fact that he mentioned he remembered he was there with Amy & Rory at one point at 3:57 you can see that hurt her, knowing he remembered them but not her.

It completes the tragedy that started in "Face the Raven". Watching Jenna's reactions as Peter delivers his lines of loss, and finally turning away to keep it together. Every sad song is about something that ended, and maybe shouldn't have. But the Impossible Girl leaves him a final message, to carry on, to run, you clever boy, and be a Doctor. And the broken Doctor does in a scene where nothing is said, just Peter's acting and Murray Gold's music. And the memories do, eventually, return.

Screw the haters, this episode rules. The final scene in the diner is one of the most bittersweet and effective goodbyes in the entire show for me. Rose’s was just sad. Donna’s was sad. Amy and Rory’s was sad. Bill’s and Nardole’s has a sort of similar vibe, but was more emphasized by the regeneration than anything else. This one is sad, with a little bit of optimism. “You said memories become stories when they’re forgotten. Maybe some of them become songs.” I’m going to CRY, that’s such a good and well-executed line. If the story of this episode was a standalone film or a novel or something, it may just be my favorite one. As an episode of Doctor Who, it has its flaws, especially given the context of Clara’s death and whatnot. But despite that, the episode HITS.

@@NotAHero98 I understand that but like mason said I think it's perfectly fine because it didn't matter to the doctor either. You'd think the doctor would be overjoyed that Gallifrey was still alive considering how excited he was at the potential of it being alive in the 50th but in that exact moment none of that mattered to him. The only thing that mattered, the only thing that he could focus on, was that Clara was dead and that's why the stakes were that they were too. This scene completely broke me. I’ve had relatives go through dementia and Alzheimer’s. They would completely forget the faces of their loved ones, not recognize them standing right in front of them and talking. They would remember bits and pieces of events past but not ever recognize the faces. It’s my worst fear of aging, personally. It’s its own kind of death; a living death, forgetting the face of your loved ones and no longer recognize them while they are standing just two feet away from you. Not being able to receive love while being surrounded by it. It’s horrible. Anyway, this scene reminded me of that. The Doctor, as if with dementia, telling a beautiful story of longing for a beautiful loved one to a presumed perfect stranger, but who is actually standing right in front of him the entire time, and he can’t just reach out and touch her. I know there are worst forms of torture, but this is pretty up there.

I've been trying to figure out why the Doctor frowns when Clara says he likes cliffhangers (at 1:56). Anybody got a clue?

I'm pretty sure that there is a litteral cliffhanger in classic doctor who... Where the doctor, the seventh i believe, is desperately hanging from a cliff. I'm not sure but maybe that doctor who is the show that invented the term cliffhanger... It would be pretty cool.

Manon Segur No I just searched it up, it originated about a century earlier with a similar fictional situation in the novel A pair of blue eyes

Manon Segur No problem, it would've been cool though if Doctor who was the one which started it

@@manonsegur7547 doctor who did create cliffhanger, it was soap opera, where an actual character hung from a cliff, but it wasnt renewed for another season before he was saved.

It's sad to think that Clara's first "final" line of "Run you clever boy, and remember me" the Doctor did just that, but in the end his memory of Clara Oswald was wiped. I know Moffat rectified this, but it's still sad.

I really wish these two got an ending like River or Donna. They were so close and even if they don't show it just the knowledge of these two living out their livers together for as long as possible would mean a lot. I mean he was willing to do anything to protect her and that's what made them dangerous but if they just went on safe adventures and she learned from her death to not do anything without the doctor then they would have been fine. And they still could have moved on to Bill after. The 70 years he was guarding Missy at the school he could have been with Clara. He wasn't doing anything dangerous then and Bill and Clara could have met before she passed away. It would also have been interesting if Bill and Clara had developed a relationship before she died because it would have brought 12 and Bill closer together. It would have also been easier to accept Bill as the new companion if Clara and the doctor lived a good life and Bill knew Clara.
