I don't get how people still like Clara as a character, she backstabbed the doctor SO many times and "almost took away what has been with him from the start" (tardis and the key throwing scene.) The whole fact that Eleven had to BEG her to stay and the whole fact that she basically rejected him because of his "old appearance" really says that she didnt like the doctor for who he is but for how he looks like and it's really heartbreaking because the doctor has so much love for Clara that he is ready to give her countless amount of chances.

@@aequiitas She didn’t really understand that they were the same person. She had an image of the doctor and that image was of 11, and then he suddenly did a complete u-turn on what she understood. She was in the wrong for attempting to throw the tardis keys away though, but i can’t help feel for her because she was in a time of grieving and the doctor is the only person she knows who could potentially reverse what happened.

I think that Moffat realized that after Matt Smith, people might hesitate to accept an older gruff doctor right away. And since in Doctor Who, the companion is in a sense representing us, Moffat decided to let Clara have her doubts "I'm sorry, I just don't know who you are anymore.." and the phone call from 11 was created to assure her, and by extension us, that the new incarnation is still the doctor. Think about this from the Doctor's perspective. You are very old now, but still look young. You have a young and pretty friend who adores you. But you know it's going to end soon. You try to comfort her, but you know it won't help enough. Then you change. You feel different, you have more anger, more maturity, but you are so scared. You are not dead, just living as a new person. Your friend does not accept you. She doesn't realise that at heart you are the same man. Then she gets a phone call from you, back when you were the man she trusted. She still doesn't see that you are there in front of her, that the man on the phone is you. This is an amazing way of disguising a way of getting fans to give the new doctor a chance. Hiding it as Clara is the one having trouble excepting the Doctor's new regeneration. Encouraging not only the characters but the audience to go along with the fact that it can't be a certain Doctor forever. A similar little trick of getting the Doctor to encourage the companion that he's still the same person is in the Eleventh Hour with Amy and the apple.
@robbiereilly8 жыл бұрын
Indeed. It's very clever. I don't think I've ever seen this technique used before. We go through it all with Clara, we associate with her and her misgivings about the new Doctor, and therefore we can also better accept him (and Peter) as the new Doctor just as she does. Also, as a bonus, it bonds us closer to her character as well. Very clever, indeed.

I've got to disagree with the people who say this is unnecessary. Not only did a large portion of the fanbase start with Matt Smith's run, but this was easily one of the largest changes from Doctor to Doctor. Capaldi's Doctor was even intentionally written (at least during Series 8) to contrast with Matt Smith's Doctor, and the Doctors from the RTD era. The lack of a catchphrase, Capaldi's old age, the lack of overt romance. Everything changed. So, that's why they included this scene. So that fans could adjust to the change better. So they could tell the fans that despite everything that's changed, the Doctor is still the Doctor.

+Magatsu Orpheus I've only begun to catch up with the new series beginning with TENNANT I had almost given up on the series beforehand and enjoyed 10 and 11 'S run [still haven't seen all of them yet] but I get the general feel of it and have found a new enthusiasm for this series I believe they went as youthful and trendy as they could with SMITH I grew up with the series [[from behind the couch to being in front of the couch!!] and SMITH is younger than I am! so they probably felt a different personality development was necessary to keep fans guessing!! CHEERS!!
@CinemaBiohazard9 жыл бұрын
+Magatsu Orpheus Plus it kinda puts a dent in the whole 'each Doctor is a completely different person.' Which simply isn't true: the Doctor gets a little scrambled for a bit after each regeneration, but it's the same Doctor each time, even if he looks completely different. But this was a nice touch to show that despite the change in many aspects of the show, it still is the same show, and just because he's not her 'boyfriend' doesn't mean that he mourned her death any the less. See? This scene works on a variety of levels!

I gotta be honest. I wasn’t the most thrilled with Peter Capaldi at first. It was tough losing Matt Smith. But this scene right flipped everything upside down. It was such a perfect scene. Clara is us. Now Peter is one of my favorites.
@alecbormia45232 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree. Peter took most of his first season to grow on me and for me to see him properly as not just the doctor but the same doctor as Smith. But when it was announced he would leave after season 10 I was very sad and wished (and still wish) he would stay a little bit longer, at least for one more season. In retrospect I wouldn't want him to stay if Moffat still left but if they both could have stayed one more season I would have loved it.

I never finished his first episode and never got to this scene, and I can safely say that I'm sorry that I did. This scene is really incredible, because it gives the people like me the power to accept Capaldi as the Doctor

Same. I had to power through to really see Capaldi. I didn’t give him the credit he deserved. I started this series with Matt Smith. I think the young, pretty face helped me love the doctors silliness more, and I felt like the silliness got lost behind of the old man. But I was wrong. He is The Doctor. As much as any of the rest of them. And he deserves to be seen.

@Succulent Cranberry Yeah, as much as it pains me to say it, I gave Jodie a chance. I've watched through her first series and the New Years day special. It wasn't even the sjw propaganda for me, moreso that the series felt hollow and lacked all the wonder and magic that it once had. Even the music was just lifeless without Murray Gold. Capaldi's series had some bad stories too, but at least he made up for with his portrayal of the Doctor. And with Jodie, I jumped ship before the absolute dumpster fire that is the Timeless Child. Now even rewatching older scenes like this is just bittersweet...
@foreveradancer969 жыл бұрын
This scene is actually so important though, because when 10 turned into 11 a lot of people really hated Matt's Doctor. David'd last scene was all 'I don't want to go...' and then he was gone and never came back and the fans were angry because they didn't want him to go either. With this telephone scene, it's equally Matt assuring the fans, as it is the Doctor assuring Clara that: "hey,.this guy's new, he's scared, but he's just as much the Doctor as I was, and you should give him a chance, accept him." I immediately loved Capaldi after this scene (I was still pouty over the loss of 11 throughout the episode) and I wish that Matt could have gotten a similar sort of validation when he started because he didn't deserve all the hate he received.

@TranscendentLion9 жыл бұрын
Painting The Roses Red I agree with this so much. Ten's exit seemed like it was written to alienate Matt Smith's Doctor, as if he was some kind of impostor. But this scene was the perfect antidote to that, showing that Capaldi is as much the Doctor as anyone before him, all the way back to Hartnell.
@foreveradancer969 жыл бұрын
TranscendentLion Exactly! The worst part for Matt was that we didn't even have a familiar companion ease us with the sudden change, it was just "We're taking away everybody you loved! Have this young guy with no eyebrows and an eight year old! Don't worry, it's definitely the same show. You just don't know anybody on it anymore!" This time, we had Clara, so that helped hugely, and then we also had Matt's Doctor nudging us towards Capaldi, so of course it's going to be a lot easier this time around.

Sometimes I think this show is cruel. This scene killed me and left me sobbing in a way it was close to absurd. BUT, this was VERY necessary. The Eleventh Doctor is my favorite to this day, he's the one that got me interested in the show in the first place, so seeing him go was the hardest thing I went through as a whovian. I don't think I would've accepted Capaldi that fast if MY Doctor himself hadn't asked me to do so. Because this scene, this is MATT telling us "Peter is scared, please give him a chance". So I did. And thank God, because he's an AMAZING and unique Doctor!! :D

I think the producers knew there might be some hesitation to fully accept Peter as the new Doctor. With every regeneration, there is always that period of time for the audience to adapt to the new character, the new actor. But, in this case, since Peter is so much older than Matt, I believe it was necessary not only for Clara to be nudged into 'seeing him' as the Doctor, but also simultaneously for us to be nudged, too. It was very clever of them to do it this way, for us to go through the experience with Clara. Very clever indeed.

As for the impersonation: I remember Smith doing some impersonations of previous incarnations, possibly because the Doctor was just reminescenting of what he was doing back then. I remember he did a very Hartnell-esque chuckle in one scene of The Snowmen (he was even somewhat similarly dressed). That made me smile back when I first watched it. :-)

The whole “regeneration” bit from the series has always been so relatable to me. New body, new personality, new morals, thoughts, opinions, but still the experiences and basic soul of every other body he’s been. And then the people around you having to get to know you and relearn things about you. It really feels like living a human life, experiences change us and in a way, we “regenerate” and grow from those experiences. And the people around us have to learn and cope with that, it’s like we can relate to both Clara and the Doctor here. And it makes the scene hit 6x as hard.

Considering that he told Mr. Clever (the Cyber-Controller) that "who knows what we'll get" if he were to regenerate, it's pretty apparent that he only took the option of directly controlling his regeneration the one time, during The War. So while, al la Karn, he COULD do it, he probably simply 'let go', as per his norm.

Well here's the thing. Even if we only take official tv anniversary specials into account, 1 has seen his next two and his 5th faces, 2 has seen his next, 5th & 6th, 3 has seen his 5th, 5 has seen his 10th, the War Doctor has seen his 10 & 11th, & 10 has seen his next face. They forget of course but it's there in the deep recesses of their minds. The Doctor's faces are preordained. And then there's Big Finish which is official where numerous crossovers involving 4-8 have happened. And the comics where last year 10-12 & right now 9-12 have met/are meeting. Oh and for the 50th, every incarnation from the original cycle met. And of course how much of The Day of the Doctor do they all remember? They were all there, communicating & saving the day. So theoretically every incarnation has met every incarnation. It's all preordained. All his faces already happened. So knowing he got old & grey? Not news. Not a factor. It already happened. 11 met 12 many times. As will 12 meet 13 & so on

Ovbs me and clearly you are big fans but for the people that jumped on the band wagon without knowing why Matt made the cameo was just baffling. You sir have a nice day 🤦🏽♂️

Mia Karlsson What kills me is how each New Who Doctor has, during a brief moment right before they regenerated, broken character and spoken AS themselves to the audience. Chris: "You were fantastic. And do you know what? So was I." David: "I don't want to go". Contrary to popular belief, this was actually David voicing the fact that he didn't want to leave the show (but had decided it was time) Matt: "I swear I won't forget any of this, not one line. I will always remember when the Doctor was me". Breaks my heart every time.

Everytime I see 12's "You don't see me" scene. I see the image of 11 trying to shine through, you don't really think about it but when he changes. He really does feel like he's trapped in a different body

This is unusual but heartwarming for Doctor Who. Many post regeneration stories kind of move forward, but Matt Smith's post Doctor experience was shocking and needed.

I don't know why so many people hate this scene, it's such a wonderful moment and reassures the audience that Capaldi isn't the 'Twelfth Doctor', he is 'THE Doctor'. (The definite article you might say!!

Orlando Soto Leyton One of the MANY things that I hate about The End of Time Pt.1 and Pt.2. The way 10 left was abysmal, far too emotional to the point where you felt RTD was actually trying to convince us that The Doctor was actually going to DIE for good! Every other doctor before and after Ten accepted and even welcomed Regeneration, they didn't see it as the reaper coming to claim him! 1st Doctor: Acknowledged that his body was "wearing a bit thin" but never did he try to avoid it, he accepted the end with grace. 2nd Doctor: Now HE is the only one who had the right to be against his regeneration, because he was being FORCED to regenerate by the Timelords, he had no choice in the matter so naturally he was against it. 3rd Doctor: After returning from his encounter with the Spider Queen we see he's frail, dying. Probably unsure if he'd regenerate at all, but still even as he was laying there on the verge of death, he focused on consoling Sarah-Jane as she sat there crying. He didn't think about himself. 4th Doctor: After all of his adventures, all of his heroic acts. He knew at Logopolis that his end was coming, but he didn't moan or mope or cry, he got the job done saw his friends one last time and smiled, reassuring them that "the moment had been prepared for" before The Watcher merges with him causing the regeneration to start. 5th Doctor: Now this was one of the most heroic acts The Doctor ever did. In order to save Peri he gave her the antidote knowing full well that there was a chance he wouldn't regenerate. He potentially sacrificed himself for good in order to save someone he cared for. 6th Doctor: Well, anyone knows that we never saw what happened to The 6th Doctor before his demise. But the episode before that had him musing about Carrot Juice. He wasn't contemplating life and death or the flaws of regeneration, he was doing what he does best. Being The Doctor. 7th Doctor: Again, his Regeneration happened whilst he was "dead" but before hand, as he was being operated on, he had the right to intervene and be emotional due to his knowledge of human medical procedures damaging his regeneration process, thus reducing his chances of surviving. 8th Doctor: He had a big reason t have disdain for regeneration, due to everything that happened in the Time War along with what we see happen in The Night of The Doctor. Everything he has seen has driven him to the conclusion that The Doctor was no longer needed, they needed a Warrior. You could tell he didn't like it, but he knew that something had to be done and he/The War Doctor was the only person capable of doing so. War Doctor: After everything he had been through, The Time War itself raging through time space and equilibrium. The lives he had lost, the battles he fought, when it came to his regeneration he looked upon it similar to how he viewed it as the 1st Doctor "wearing a bit thin" he even joked about his potential appearance, viewing his regeneration as the end of his time as The Warrior and once again becoming The Doctor. 9th Doctor: Similar to the 5th Doctor, the 9th Doctor potentially sacrificed himself by absorbing the heart of the TARDIS from Rose into himself. Though he states that he can regenerate I've always felt that a small part of him wasn't so sure. Nevertheless, just before he changed he was joking about the process, then he reassured his companion that she was fantastic before stating that he himself was fantastic also. Going out with a smile. Looking forward to his next life. 10th: As I stated at the beginning of this very long comment (apologies) 10's departure was over emotional to the point where it felt like he was actually going to die. Not to mention the fact that he WASTED a regeneration simply because he "liked" being him (Vanity much?) Throughout the whole of The End of Time, all he did was cry and moan about his "death" that was surely coming for him. He didn't leave with his head held high, he left his time as The Doctor with a whimper, crying and nearly killing himself and destroying the TARDIS in the process. 11th Doctor: After roughly a thousand years or more of constant warfare on Trenzalore the Doctor knew this time that his life was over. No more Regenerations, no more chances. This was the end and he knew it. Even the , knowing he'd die he went and faced his foes with honor and bravery. Then when the Timelords granted him a new regeneration cycle, he gleefully accepted it as he regenerated. Then when the time came, he mused on his changing and ultimately saw it as a good thing. He looked on it as his chapter ending and the Doctor's continuing. Again, sorry for the immensely long comment, but just look at the example and see that 10's regeneration was handled so poorly that was almost another waste of a regeneration.

The Godly Brony Well when you compare his actions in the episode to all the others she has seen/met he doesn't act like the Doctors before him. I can see your point that Clara shouldn't need to be told that he is still the doctor but I shall counter that with the question: Why do people need to be told don't bring a hair dryer into the shower and turn it on?

The delivery of "You can't see me" took me from fine, feeling sort of distanced to the whole exchange, to instant harsh shudder-crying. Oh god, what a horrid idea it would be to live for as long as the Doctor does, and knowing that the person you need most in this moment doesn't treat you like the same person, even though you are.

The brilliance of DR Who is realizing that no show, no matter how amazing it is, you cannot have the same actor forever. Making recast as unavoidable like death itself. They took a “problem”, and made it an essential and wonderful part of the series. Accepting that things change, people come and go…and, it’s ok.

I love Capaldi’s doctor so much. Everything we’ve learned about the doctor up to his incarnation is really felt in his portrayal. This really felt like the doctor at their most raw. He will always hold a special place in my heart as my favorite doctor. When I was younger I hated him and Clara, but nearly a decade later on a rewatch showing the series to my grandpa I gained a new appreciation for the both of them and now they are my all time favorites. What a crazy 180°!

It's always a challenge for writers to make different Doctors feel like the same person. In that one moment, the one moment where the Doctor says, "you can't see me, can you?" i think that moment provides the best perspective on that. it really lays bare how intense regenerating is for him, and how he's still always the same person

11 was my true introduction to the show. Although by this point I had seen many regenerations in past viewings this was my first "live" one. How lucky was I to be reassured by my Doctor that things would be okay. Sweet moment for a fan.

I love when the Doctor has a companion who continues after a regeneration. The companion is our window into the show and the companion grieving over their Doctor helps me feel I can do the same. It also offers an intetesting dynamic because we get to see how the companion interacts with the Doctor before and after the regeneration.
