Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee used to come to America to do Conventions together. When the demands of answering fan question were finished for the day, they would go off to play and I mean literally play. They start water pistol fights in a hotel lobby, have elevator races, if they were signing autographs for a passerby, they would often sign each others names on the wrong photographs. Have silly Doctor who like arguments with hotel staffers and try to drag passers by into their absurd arguments. IOW - Actors with a day off. :-b

The best part about the Doctor, is that he's kinda real. Like most classic Doctors are just playing themselves. Something about that kinda unlocks some for of childish glee in me. It's adorable, really.

"You young men and I go back to our time zones. But considering the way things have been going, well I shudder to think what you'll do without me." It breaks my heart knowing these were the last words William Hartnell has uttered on-screen in his career (The Three Doctors was his final role before passing away in 1975).

arcadian78 My favourites are Jon followed by Colin. Jon Pertwee is just awesomely cool whether he is considered (by Hartnell’s Doctor) a dandy or not. Colin also brought a no nonsense tougher edge to the character (probably in response to the awful costume he was forced to wear).

Hartnell's enthusiasm, professionalism and love for the show spawned a franchise that has given billions pleasure throughout the world and the ages. He has achieved immortality as his image and portrayal continues to be seen to this day..... not a bad achievement is it 😉

@@davekp6773 Agreed about Colin. I do think it was absolutely fitting that he was the incarnation to meet the Valeyard, something of a hard look into his future in a more metaphorical sense. Six was definitely the darkest up until that point, and I think being shown the absolute lowest level that the Doctor could reach was something of a wake-up moment for him as a character, diverting him away from that descent for a while at least. I do think he solidifies the notion that there are no bad Doctors, just ones not as popular as others. Interference from the higher-ups and such at the BBC just came at a really inopportune time to look at darker angles of the show.

@@DeanStrickson Hartnell was ill at the time of The Three Doctors, and he never recovered. Originally, his doctor had a larger role, but due to his declining health he was limited to just a few scenes, and he was sitting the whole time. Hartnell's scenes were the first to be filmed, and he exchanged dialog without either Troughton or Pertwee present. Hartnell's part was edited in later. This was the first acting job Hartnell had in three years due to his illness. After the filming, it was back to his bed where he would linger until his death. It's really a sad way to go -- slowly over about a five year period.

The 3rd Doctor is oddly fascinating to me. He's almost so completely different from "The Doctor" that we know from all the other past and future incarnations. So much more physically active and threatening. So somber and introspective. A subtle philosophical character-study of The Doctor's blossoming morality at this point in his life. Growing up from the stern, self-serious original person, to the whimsical, optimistic crusader, to finally this imposing force for objective universal justice. It's with Pertwee The Doctor becomes a father-figure to humanity and its struggle to climb out of the Cold War and into a better age of peace and mutual understanding. At least, to me.

I wonder how much that was due to the restrictions set by the BBC. Because of budgetary constraints they decided that restricting Pertwee to Earth was the best way to save money - so I think the writers decided to make him more like a secret agent. It also fit with Pertwee's personality.

William Hartnell was in horrible health when this was made. There were days when he couldn't function mentally. One of the producers got him on a good day, and he was eager to do the role in the special. Then, when they called back, his wife broke the news about his mental and physical health. They rewrote the script and had Hartnell record his part separately. He never got to meet with Troughton and Pertwee.

Juliet Fischer actually he did meet Troughton and Pertwee. They did a photoshoot to promote the episode. That's the only time they met in costume. Please dont try and make facts about the show by guessing or assuming. Find out before commenting. So many people make remarks about the show like they know its history and they dont. Watch interviews, behind the scenes, read interviews and the magazine. All the extra stuff on the DVDs. Listen to actors and crew at conventions and panels and on stage. Then through that you have a better understanding.

I'd like to see an episode in which the Doctor goes to 18th Century Scotland, finds trouble (naturally), and gets the help of the aged Jamie MacCrimmon. Jamie doesn't remember his time with the Doctor (thanks to the Time Lords) and wonders two things: why this weirdness isn't as upsetting to him as it is to the other Scots around him, and why this stranger with no name is grinning like a maniac and knows him so well. Because you know the Doctor will be absolutely thrilled to see him again.

Jamie still remembers his first adventure with the Doctor (The Time lords say so shortly after wiping his and Zoe's memories). Still could provide an excellent story since Jamie never found out about regeneration, and wouldn't believe that this new person is the same Doctor he "briefly" knew.

If Ian Chesterton & Barbara Wright had encountered the Doctor by chance during his exile on 20th Century Earth during his 3rd incarnation, would he pretend that he doesn‘t know them or tell them what he really is and why he got stranded on Earth after all they‘ve been through together?

At that point, it had been roughly 15 years between them getting back to London and Pertwee's exile. They probably would have had a family at that point, raising kids, and the like. I doubt he would want to try and make contact and drag them back into his dangerous life. Not to mention, they had no concept of regeneration. And, let's face it, Ian and Barbara love The Doctor, but not his lifestyle. They spent the entire time trying to get back home. The Doctor knew that, too. (Side Note: The Brigadier's part in Peter Davison's MAWDRYN UNDEAD was originally written for Ian, but the actor was unavailable so they had to rewrite the part.)

"Though, considering the way things have been going, well I... shudder to think what you will do without me." Christ, feels more like William Hartnell said that as himself than as the Doctor as he sadly passed away just years later. Then future appearances of the First Doctor involved other actors like Richard Hurndall and David Bradley filling in the role as well as John Guilor providing voice over work.

If Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart & Benton were in the TARDIS several more seconds after The Dooctor's 2 previous incarnations got sent back to their own time zones, they would've heard the TARDIS materialization noise that sounded a little quieter and would've seen a new dematerialization circuit appear on top of the TARDIS console and know that the Doctor has been forgiven and he can travel in the universe again.

They didn't heard that at all since they had more work about what just happened in their headquarters through UNIT. If someone wrote the following story to show him leaving, the Doctor and Brigaidier argue as usual since he now can leave Earth whenever he wants. So this allows Jo to come with him to Metebelis III (like they mention the following story Carnival of Monsters, which never explains how he leaves Earth to travel since they arrive to a boat in early 20th century their appearance and mentions about the planet he wanted to show her.

During the Jon Pertwee era there were 5 seasons: 1970 - 1974. The Three Doctors started the 4th season; 1972 - 1973 where there are several adventures in outer space. The final adventure on a alien planet was The Planet of the Spiders (1974)

Pertwee did four more stories that included the Brigadier: 'The Green Death'(Season 10 finale, Jo's last story); 'The Time Warrior'(Season 11 opener, which introduced Sarah, and the first Sontaran, with the Brigadier only in the first episode, and the rest of the story in the middle ages); 'Invasion of the Dinosaurs', and 'Planet of the Spiders'. The Fourth Doctor visited 'modern' Earth periodically as long as Sarah was with him; the more 'cosmic' stuff started after she left.

Anti-HyperLink Pertwee’s first two seasons had him fully trapped on Earth however partway through his second season he repaired his TARDIS to the point that he could go off world but he would be forced to return to Earth after each trip. Season 9 he had a few more space adventures mixed in with the normal UNIT adventures until his exile was fully lifted at the beginning of Season 10. He spent the rest of Season 10 in space until the series finale. Then we had more of a mix again in Season 11
