@@Schtauffen04 I can't unhear that Dalek growl anymore. Holy shit. The "Good Dalek" was right. I knew I was a little biased against Capaldi at first, and it slowly changed by the time we got to Ashildr and his reasoning for picking that face. And this scene was a masterstroke. This made me fully accept this was a worthy regeneration. This was peak deconstruction and reconstruction of the Doctor. Showing that despite all the shortcomings The Doctor can make, all the difficult choices and rageful split second actions that change him for better or worse, beneath all of it is a man who swore to save rather than slaughter. And he fights because he knows if he can get other people to see how he sees everything, so much more can be saved. Like Capaldi also said in another speech, "What I do, I do because it's right!" A man so impassioned to preserve and protect life even if it comes at cost to him but still keeps pushing because he knows where he stands and knows what he must do. Moffat struck a goldmine in having Capaldi flesh out our favorite Time Lord even further beyond what came before.

Reminds me of this quote from M.A.S.H. Hawkeye: War isn’t Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse. Father Mulcahy: How do you figure that, Hawkeye? Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell? Father Mulcahy: Sinners, I believe. Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them - little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

And the best part is she makes the same choice every single time the Doctor tries to give that speech. If you remember, he says that she always said that same thing the last "fifteen times." He wiped her mind every single time because he knows she is truly good and though she may get pushed into feeling the need to defend humanity on a drastic scale, she would never have actually pushed the button. He keeps wiping her mind, even at the end, because he knows he doesn't have to worry about her or her intentions. The speech wasn't for Kate, it was for Zygella. It's possible he keeps her mind wiped because he doesn't want her to see him like he was in that room, that or he wanted to keep the idea of the failsafe between the two sides intact. Either way, he trusts her and knows he can continue to do so regardless of whether or not she has all of the details of what happened.

I love the way his voice changes too. It's more noticeable when he's mocking them "Bonnie sweetheart" sounds like a 11 thing and "fingers on buzzers" definitely sounded like something 10 would do. But throughout the entire speech there are points where his voice fills with something more than emotion. It's knowledge and experience from 400 years spent believing he burned his planet. In that moment you feel all the post time war doctors. The War Doctor and his willingness to go through with it, 9 and how he was so brash until he met Rose and felt excitement again, 10 and his regret over it all, 11 and how he tried to move on and be silly all culminating in 12. The Doctor who has accepted it all into him and is capable of being the doctor and the warrior. Thankfully he has companions to pull him back when he goes to far.

If you are constantly downtrodden and then those who do so tell you life just isn't fair, when everytime you sit down and do talk ... you just get dismissed and ignored ... These are the situations where the speech of the doctor falls short. This is where I would actually go to a lecture of Jesus. If you get hit, brace the other cheek. But if they hit you again, hit back. Because otherwise you will just be hit until they are satisifed or you are dead. And just like Ghandi as a person and his pacifism had really dark nuances many don't know, just being the forgiving one, the one on the moral pedestal, might just earn you only suffering and all the boons to those who don't adher to your standards.

The french revolted against their king and what followed was literally namend the reign of blood. The Russians revolted against the Czars and it led to gulags and the ruination of russian agriculture. It's easy from our perspective to take the moral high road. And going through that situation 15 times in a row, until that speech (I doubt, he had to go through those emotions every 15 takes through), we only see the last 16th take, where the Doctor adds that speech, all other takes failed, I guess. Why else would he had to reset their memories 15 times? At least Kate's. Someone must have pressed a button, either Kate or Bonnie and nothing happened, because both boxes are empty, they then came to some stand off, or agreement, but it wasn't enough for the Doctor, because that's not, what he wanted, he wanted to stop the war by having THEM see the reason, having THEM realize the values at stake and stuff. He wanted them to make the decision of their own free will, not from situation (realizing the boxes are empty), so he reset them 15 times until what we see here with the speech and everything and Kate stands down on her own, seeing the reason + Zygella (Bonnie) as well eventually. And realizing the boxes are empty without seeing it (by pressing buttons), discovering the Doctor's "bluff". I love that.

@Croftice1 Жыл бұрын
@@curruptedJimbo That's a good interpretation, although not sure, that's what the writers intended. "Because it's not a game, Kate! This is a scale model of war. Every war ever fought, right in front of you!" That line tells it all. He's not pointing towards the boxes, but towards them representing the "easy solution to end a war". Everyone can push a button and refuse to take responsibility (or put their sign to it proudly - looking at you, Zygella XD). The boxes being empty is another thing. The Doctor wouldn't risk it all to arm them really with the imbecille's gas and a remote device to blow up the Black Archive, would he? The emptiness representing empty promisses seems kinda outta way, since a war is never empty, there's too much sorrow, pain, suffering, all the stuff, that's left behind, after the job is done. There's nothing in the box to begin with, and if there's nothing in the box, and the ceasefire did not stand, the zygons would surely have killed everyone in that room. So, if this scenario has happened 15 times prior, then that means it has worked EVERY SINGLE TIME. But, there are always a few zygons out there who don't want to think. Those few zygons begin a revolution, and there is some fighting, and some people die. But the Doctor's plan always manages to completely quell the revolution before it becomes a full-scale war. and not just any war. he fought on the front lines of the biggest, most destructive war in creation. a war that stretched across time and space itself. war scars people, both civies and soliders. and the doctor, across 4 regenerations, has had to live with those scars, both from the things he's seen and the things he's done. and then he had to end it himself, because there was no winning for anyone else. he had to commit genocide twice over to end the war and save creation. and even though he saved Gallifrey, those scars remain.

This is my favourite speech of all time. Not of fiction, or television. Of straight up all time. Unlike the recent 13th, you can hear and feel all 12 Doctors riding on Capaldi's back. From 1st to War, and 9th to 11th. And also his own little touch. This build up. These immense centuries that he's lived through. The number of wars he's seen. The number of battles he's fought. The number of people he's lost. The amount he knows. He's been to the beginning of the universe and back again. He's seen everything twice. And at this moment, he's trying to let children learn. He's trying to teach them. Guide them away from futile conflict. The conflict that he is familiar with. The conflict he KNOWS. Better than anyone else. And better yet, he knows himself. And he doesn't want anyone to go through what he has gone through. Capaldi was literally born for the Doctor.

If we could see God in Heaven the same way that we see the fictional Doctor, we would have a perfect understanding of how He sees us. All of the centuries He has watched us be our own worst enemy; destroying that which is good; embracing that which is harmful, and weeping for us all the while. If you can understand God, our Creator the way you understand The Doctor, a magnificently crafted fictional character, then you would have accomplished something that some people refuse to ever receive: to confess that God in Heaven is loving, kind, compassionate, just, and absolutely real. Peace.🙏🏾

@@tycol322 The way "John Smith" behaved facing his impending "death" upon becoming the Doctor again was what really, solidly sold me on David Tennant's acting strength. How he can so easily move into being a frightened, fearful man and then that one brief second where he talks like the Doctor and then gasps in horror at the way he speaks. Then just utterly breaks down in fear and terror as he knows he has to "die" and let the Doctor come out again. That man has some range. Honestly a show can be complete shit and if it has Tennant in it it's worth watching for him alone.

One of the issues I had, as a fan of the first 26 seasons, is that the newer seasons forgot about how interesting the Doctor could be outside of traveling in time and knowing all this knowledge. Season 9, however, works on so many levels because it gets to the heart of the Doctor. This scene is possibly one of the best scenes in the whole of the show's history because it shows the Doctor's pain, anguish, and in the face of it all, the ability to continue. Like 'Heaven Sent,' it reveals that no matter what happens to him, the Doctor's strength is his incredible reslience. And notice that while most shows would end this with an action scene, all we have is a few powerful performances, and it works brilliantly. This is Doctor Who at its finest.

The transitions from Doctor to Doctor are what have made the revival era who so engaging. Eccleston is moments from the Time War as he arrives, still convinced he killed them all. Over one series he learns to accept people in his life again and even falls for Rose. They sacrifice themselves to save each other and the universe but Eccleston dies and changes. Tennant its still broken from the Time War, but actively wants to be happier but has no idea how to do it, and carries that misery with him over his whole time there long with his feelings for Rose. He loses her, and loses himself in adventures with Martha Jones who falls for him at the worst time but has the strength to leave once she realizes he'll never feel the same way. Once again she leaves and after meeting her once Donna Noble is a breath of fresh air. He lets her in as a friend and her departure becomes the hardest pill to swallow because she wanted to travel forever and can't even remember him without burning up. Lonely god is an apt description of him and eventually when he dies he tries to make peace with his fate (despite not wanting to go) and becomes Matt Smith Smith tries to leave the memories of the Time war behind him and loses himself in adventures with Amy and Rory as their bizarre imaginary friend of sorts. River Song comes along and complicates his life more only to eventually lose all of them over time, which forces him to retreat once again until the mystery of Clara rears its head and he can't turn away. Of course by the time the mystery is solved he has to come face to face with the Time War once again, and with Tennant and the War Doctor sets everything as right as possible. He makes a last stand on Trenzalore and get's a new regeneration cycle. He saves the day once again at the expense of regenerating into Peter Capaldi. Capaldi is more troubled and introspective at first, trying to decide what kind of man he is and runs into the Master as Missy. Through his time he confronts his anger, regret, and feels like a time Lord that has tried to learn from his experiences from the Time War as opposed to running from it. This scene is a perfect example of a man who internalized his pain and tries to use it to help people that are lost, like he was for so long. You see the whole of the Doctor's personality through Capaldi's run: aloof, bitter, impish, childlike, regretful, and is accepting of who he is. Even when he finally leaves, he comes to accept his own time as the Doctor and lets himself go. Whether you enjoyed all of the revival or not, you have to respect the effort to string these elements in such a way that it's still the story of one person's struggle through pain and always looking for redemption. Sadly I never feel this continuity in current Who, but that's me. Here you see the whole of revival Who's pain on display in a powerful and effective scene.

What I love about this scene is how the Doctor does everything he can to stop war from happening. The boxes, the memory wipe, the speech, all because he has lived it. He has lived with the guilt of being the man who caused the genocide of his people, and even before he decided that, the things he did as the War Doctor has him always believing that what he did will end soon: Until he did it for too long. Before he realised it, every day of 'The end justified the means' became years of it and when he finally looked in the mirror, he was an old man. No longer the young incarnation that he saw reflected in his eyes when he first entered the fray. And when he stared through that reflection's eyes, he could see every single atrocity that the monster commited, every single life that it took for a better tomorrow, for the continuation of his people. And he declared there and then: No More After he 'wiped' out his race. He lived with the guilt for more than four hundred years. Always looking back at what he thought was the right thing at that time, always thinking in the back of his mind that there had to have been a better idea but never coming up with any solutions. The guilt and the pain has torn him apart many times and vowed to never allow such a thing to happen again and never let someone hold such pain. And so, in the face of war, he would rather be the pacifist than the warmonger if it meant no one else will die meaningless.

Got to agree with Julie up there; she's not being disappointed at seeing something in the Doctor she didn't know about; she witnessed what the Time War did to him first-hand. She's just sad because he's having to dredge up all those horrible memories to give such a heartfelt speech, and she knows it tears him apart to not only recall the war, but his own part in it.

The Doctor doesn't win battles with force, or weapons. He's mostly a logician who wins or accomplishes his victories with logic. He doesn't have a superpower or a weapon, he has logic and intelligence, and he can win many battles with words. He's a great logician and usually is able to influence people just with logic, almost like a magician...

Watching this speech before taking a speech class or unit and after one is a completely new experience. You can see how he’s reaching down to speak genuinely and freely. Exploiting ethos, logos, and pathos in a way the professional speeches I had to analyze for the class didn’t. The writer of the speech: Brilliant for composing such a work that can really dig into your feelings and make you really think. The speaker: Just as brilliant. Execution of the speech is just as, if not more, important as the writing. Sending out raw emotions, staying in character, the hand motions and movements to emphasize points. Brilliant and beautiful. I can’t say much more. To comprehend what’s happening is one thing. To explain it fully and it’s effects is another. I feel as I feel as if someone watching this as their introduction to Doctor Who (Given some Zygon background info on their goals, of course) could gleam so much about the Doctor’s past and what kind of show this is as a whole. Intense action, but what’s truly up front is the mind games, speeches, and quiet moments where you’re on the edge of your seat where no music is present. That’s all I can say about this. Everything else you have to understand on your own.

this scene encompasses everything about the doctor: he is tired of war but will fight to death to save people. his wraith is endless but his mercy is without end. he sees that war is stupidly pointless and pointlessly stupid. he is the ultimate solider and the ultimate pacifist. for me, this is not only peter capaldi's best performance as the doctor but the best scene in all of DW.

The raw emotion that you sense from Capaldi’s speech. The movements and gestures he makes, and the way he switches between The Mad Doctor and The Timelord that we know is constantly suffering internally... I have not seen anyone who has managed to give this much tension and gravity to a scene. It weighs even more when you realize the boxes are empty. Because now, you’ve started to think like he has. Seen things through the Doctor’s perspective. It was beautifully done.

+Takeru Minamoto In my mind, I have heard the screams of all the entities still alive at the time the Sun becomes a Red Giant and destroys all life left on this Earth. In my mind, I have heard the screams of all the entities sill alive at the time when the galaxy gets pulled into our galactic center's black hole. In my mind, I have heard the silence of when the entire universe ends in a "big freeze" and no conscious entities are left to scream. It's quite a contrast and quite depressing at times. I surely do hope it's all just in my mind. Life itself appears to just be an illusion from our human perspective as far as eternity is concerned. One day we all die from something, a death that appears will last into an actual eternity. We will forget everything we ever knew and experienced, even the imaginations within our very own mind, and then one day in future eternity will be forgotten. (Or so it currently appears). But then again, since I do not know what I do not know, I will be the first to admit that I could be wrong. Maybe I will have an actual eternal conscious existence into future eternity somehow, someway, somewhere, in some state of existence, but "probably not". But it is possible by various methods that my mind could imagine. "The Suckiness of Life" Life sucks and then we die and/or life does not suck and then we still die. Then we either have a life after this life, which will probably suck and/or not suck, or we won't, and all suckiness for us will end for eternity. But, while we exist (however long that may be for), if life sucks, try to make it better and then it might not suck so bad. Every conscious entity has basic choices, (even A.I.'s): Help, Neutral, Hurt, and to whom to Help, Neutral, Hurt. Choices, with all the consequences and ramifications, seen and unseen, of all of our choices, plus whatever nature can do to/for us. Then we apparently still die one day from something. But then what in actual reality for the rest of eternity? Currently it appears nothing at all for us. It just currently appears it will all end in an eternal silence for us either way. But, then again, maybe I am wrong.

When the revolution is over, 9 times out of 10, the real people in power during the revolution, execute the revolutionaries. Because they know how to topple systems, how to wage guerrilla war. They know, literally, all the tricks to bring down their "brave new world". And therefore they represent a threat, The last threat to go. So I love the deep, easily missed but obviously understood, meaning in that question.

"They only way anyone can live in peace is if they are prepared to forgive. So why dont you break the cycle? ...You dont know... how many hearts will be broken, how many lives shattered... until everybody does what they were always going to have to do from the beginning. Sit. Down. And. Talk. ...And do you know what you do with all that pain? Shall I tell you where to put it? You hold it tight... till it burns your hand. And you say this: no one else will ever have to live like this. No one else will ever have to feel this pain. Not on my watch." These words are what I need to remember. Not for war, not for politics. But for family and for all those who come from unloving homes. I came from a cycle of abuse passed down from mother to daughter. I refuse to continue the cycle of resentment and bitterness. I might have endured a lot of pain but if I can help, just by being someone willing to hear a fellow abused child's story and tell them it's not all in their head... if i can minimise the pain then I will have done my job. I can't save them from being hurt, but I can save them from having to wait 22 years to realise what is happening to them. Not on my watch.

I agree. Just up to the part before Bonnie realizes that the boxes are empty. Unfortunately we live in a world run by unenlightened, narrow-minded, self-interested bigots all willing to go to war for things like money, respect, and hate over things that happened yesterday all the way back to millenia ago. Who is going to break the cycle? Wouldn't that make them look weak? (sarcasm)

The real problem with getting all the world leaders to sit down and watch this video is that the Doctors argument relies on people being rational. Rational people are more likely to make rational decisions. All it takes is one person who irrationally believes that they are right and their cause is true because it came from a higher power or total annihilation would be preferable to accepting a compromise and we get one of those buttons pushed. How do you argue with someone who knows exactly the world they want to get out of that choice and that world is following one voice, listening to one sermon, wiping out all opposing views and just stagnating. Because if the world is static, it is predictable. To some people, predictable feels safe. If no one is thinking new thoughts, the old thoughts won't get challenged. If there are no new thoughts, the status quo remains. Those in power, stay in power and those with no power stay that way.

Better yet, lock Capaldi, Trump, and Kim Jong Un in a room and just recreate this scenario

Wow. This is amazing, head and shoulders with any monologue from past doctors. Move over Mr. Tenant, and thank you Mr. Baker for laying the ground work for such moments.

thank you! Tom Baker is my doctor, and no one will EVER compare, but he couldnt do this, hes not old enough! But he did give us the doctors personality, the rage and compassion the doctor needed to do this!

If nothing else about this scene, 8:48 is the greatest showing of just how old the Doctor is, how much he's experienced previously - a man utterly exhausted from the life he's had to live and the atrocities he's survived.
