In regards to the bi-regeneration, here's my take: Fourteen needed to stop, he was wearing himself out and reaching breaking point. That's why he subconsciously reverted to a familiar face; he was so broken after the events of series 12 and Flux, suffering such a massive identity crisis, carrying so much trauma from past lives, he literally "regressed" to protect himself. He has to heal and fully overcome his traumas, and being on Earth surrounded by the Nobles is him taking the step to beginning this. One day, however, Fourteen will regenerate into Fifteen and it's at this point that we return to the moment of the bi-regeneration as Fifteen is displaced through the timeline, emerging on top of UNIT HQ alongside Fourteen. This is where we begin Fifteen's life, a Doctor now fully recovered, revitalised and ready to start anew. He tells Fourteen he needs to stop as he knows must happen (it's in effect a bootstrap paradox) and, as we see, carries on in his own TARDIS for further adventures.

RTD inherited a sad doctor who just lost half the universe to the Flux. I don't think he wanted to drudge through that recovery. This regeneration concept clearly shows Ncuti is the later incarnation. He is stable, empathic, loving and will lead to a roller coster of positive stories a regular regeneration could not have done. Great writing.

i totally get where youre coming from about the bigeneration. Personally, i really liked it, because like ncuti said, the doctor has been running from trauma to trauma for hundreds of years without so much as a minute to say "what the hell?". He lost so many companions, adric, rose, Jenny, amy, rory, Clara, Bill. He even left his own grandaughter, susan, behind. And hes just been bottling it all up, never even bringing up his previous companions because that would mean feeling the pain, and he cant deal with the pain and save the universe at the same time. With the bigeneration, tenent gets to actually slow down and heal from all that trauma in a safe and loving environment with the support of a family before continuing his adventures, and Ncuti kept all the love and fond memories of his previous adventures, but left all the trauma in the past (or at least in tenent lol) and gets to move forward with a fresh start. Something that's always bugged me, as a psychologist, is that in fiction non human beings always have human like psychology. and that due to several reasons, namely its hard to picture a different kind of psychology when we've never encountered one before and if its too different from human then its gonna be offputting to the audience. but this is a very interesting way to show how the doctor is both similar and different to humanity in his psychology, and im very interested to see what they might do with it in the future. of course, this could all just be my interpretation. also, i just realized this is the second time Donna has seen the doctor split and create a second doctor

I heard that due to the Toymaker and his use of that beam, Doctor 15 got pulled earlier into the timeline. So when Doctor 14 eventually goes we will only have Doc15. It's all behind the scene stuff, which we may never see. It's sort of mentioned in the exchange of dialogue, when Doct15 says it's time for Doc14 to rest and heal a bit, Doc14 asks why, cause Doc15 looks fine. Then Doc15 says something like "we are doing rehab out of order, I am fine cause you fixed yourself". That is how I have understood it, if it makes any bit of sense.
@david.l8698
@david.l8698 8 ай бұрын
So does Bi-regeneration mean that 14 eventually does regenerate properly into 15 as a "healed man" making him the Ncuti we see here then at some point Ncuti will be dragged out of his time to this moment where 14 bi-generates or is 14s growth from this point shaping 15 in real time as thats his "past" happening and syncing the Timelines more and more, day by day?
@aquasky77
@aquasky77 8 ай бұрын
@@david.l8698 I am not sure how this will happen, I don't think we will ever see it. It's like the last second of Clara's life, we know she eventually went to the ravan moment and died cause the world has not ended but we never saw it. In my head when Doctor 14 time will come, Doctor 15 will be there and all the regeneration energy will go into Doctor 15. However from the dialog it's certain that Doctor 15 is definitely the healed version from Doctor 14. It's just that he arrived before Doctor 14 began the healing process.

I steer clear of major spoilers or previews, so I entered the regeneration of the Doctor without much knowledge of what was going to unfold. Nevertheless, there were whispers that the Doctor would undergo a transformation in the concluding special episode. 🤔 The encounter was deeply moving for me, and I caught myself uttering, "Dont go Doctor," with tears welling up in my eyes, 😭 reminiscent of the sentiments shared by many during his earlier departure. Can anyone else relate to this sentiment?

Think of it like the Watcher at the end of Tom Baker's run, another shard of the Doctor that is needed to repair the regeneration cycle, but rather than us seeing the merging we're seeing the split moment, 14 keeps the Trauma to deal with in their own time leaving 15 with a healed mind. Same sort of thing as the Valeyard, the Watcher, The Metacrisis, all showing that regeneration can create new/offshoot entities.

The way I read it: 14 can go to therapy and work on his mental baggage, while 15 is now 'carefree' and has chance to collect his very own trauma in season 1. It gives writers and new viewers of the show a chance to get to know the new doctor.

Honestly, this episode made me deeply, fully happy. If anyone deserves a happy ending... and time to find peace of mind... it's 10/14. David is a legacy we are lucky to have, forever if possible. I see this as a closed loop. 14 was supposed to regenerate into 15 at a much later time, but the Toymaker caused it to happen before its time. So 15 was pulled from the future to fix the premature loss of 14 before he had a chance to heal. One day in the future, 14 wiil then regenerate into 15. And that is 15's past. Love Ncuti's energy. He got to share the spotlight... which never happens in a regeneration episode. So that was a cool bonus. He & David were a joy to watch together. Just what the Doctor, both of them, needed. Really no need to overthink it though. The whole thing was beautiful!

So for me the idea of Bi-Regeneration is sort of a cross between forced regeneration and what happened with the Doctor’s Hand in Series 4. Basically it’s taking the next incarnation from the future and instead of the current incarnation changing into them it expels the next incarnation into its own separate entity, allowing for both to exist. Ncuti’s Doctor is still the Doctor. All the same history and memories of everything but without the baggage and damage that the Doctor has basically had over the last 60 years. He’s the same man, but as his Doctor says, the only reason HIS Doctor is okay and feels much better is because David’s Doctor takes that time out to actually enjoy life and be with those he loves, to allow him to actually move on from that painful history. Which to me suggests David and Ncuti’s Doctor ARE in fact linked together but I imagine it’s a mental type connection. Where the work David’s Doctor does to heal himself by living with the Nobles is actively helping Ncuti’s Doctor to carry on with a brand new lease of life

I like the idea that fans have been talking about that Davids seperate doctor will later become the curator.

i interpreted it as 14 does eventually regenerate normally into 15, since 15 said they are having rehab out of sync. The reason 15 was so happy and over the sadness of 15 was because 14 took that time to rest, then eventually ends up regenerating into 15 at the bi-regeneration, in some timey wimey way

Personally, the way Bi-Generation was done, I liked it. I like the idea of the 14th Doctor being in his own skin, recovering from the years and years of trauma, regardless of if somehow the 15th Doctor is still in his future and that's why he was so easily able to brush off the trauma of what's happening, or if it is what it is. Also, (me always hoping for the Valeyard), it would bring a way to have the Valeyard be introduced somehow (Bi-generation) without THE DOCTOR being the one who becomes pure evil, rather, all of his evil and anger causes him to split into the Valeyard and The Doctor (Yes I know I'm huffing copium but let me wish xD ). I understand some people's hesitancy, but the show's mythos is always changing, and as long as there's some things confirmed in Ncuti's run (specifically that he is truely the 15th incarnation) it will be fine. RTD has already said in the commentary track, there's going to be absolute proof that the TARDIS that Ncuti took is THE TARDIS we know and love.

My theory is at some point after he has mentally healed after staying with the Nobles the 14th Doctor will regenerate but when he does it will be the exact same time that his past self was shot by The Toy Maker; so my theory is a Bi-Regeneration is when one Time Lord or Time Lady is in two different places in time and they regenerate in those two places at the exact same moment. The younger Toymaker 14th Doctor doesn't know what Bi-Regeneration is but the 14th Doctor who witnessed it in his past, regenerates after living with the Nobles and healing himself and regenerates splitting out of his past body as a fully mentally healed 15th Doctor knows exactly what a Bi-Regeneration is because he lived it. The only major flaw in my theory is what happens to the 2nd Tardis, that the real flaw in my theory, but is someone more clever than I wants to build on my theory to explain away the 2nd tardis, I am all for it. But that's my humble head canon theory on Bi-Regeneration that it is when One Time Lord/Time Lady in two separate moments in time regenerate at the exact same time.

The way RTD has talked about it, the BR affected all The Doctor's lives, so in the Tales of the TARDIS and Time Crash and The Curator, that is something similar so each can get a break. I don't mind it. And I take it as evetually when 14 properly recovers/rehabilitates from coming to terms with all that's happened in his lives, he will properly regen into 15 and at that moment, 15 will disappear from wherever he is and appear in that scene from this ep where he pops out. So, it really isn't as crazy as people seem to be taking it, it's 14 taking the long way around. The only thing that could be a bit much is the other T being made, but again, that could work itself out anyway. Plus, I trust RTD to connect the dots.

I’m very much of two minds on this, and Donna no longer being the DoctorDonna. On the one hand, I miss Ten and Donna so much and love seeing more of them together. But Donna’s story was SO good because it was the most tragic tragedy in the history of Doctor Who. They stole away that gut wrenching tragedy. I want David Tennant on my screen for every minute of every show, and Ten/Fourteen so badly needed this happiness…but…it’s kind of a cop out. An easy “everybody wins” “happily ever after” end that I associate with lazy writing. And children’s stories. Again, love he gets time to rest, but I think he should have regenerated fully. It was a satisfying and complete circle to have him regenerate once when he resisted, and now when he’s grown and is ready to accept it.

@BathersonMote

It's purely a guess on my part, but the whole bi-regeneration thing seems to have been used to keep Tennant as a Doctor, in the current timeline. I'm sure RTD knew it would be controversial and it wasn't a necessary part of the story. I think that, with the new Whoniverse, you may see an occasional special with Tennant's "retired" Doctor. It won't be some universe saving adventure, but something a bit lighter. There was no need to have him settle down, but still have access to his Tardis, unless there were plans to use it. Perhaps he will take Donna or Rose on trip to meet some historic figure and help them out on some small-scale adventure like they did with Agatha Christie. I could be completely wrong, but it doesn't seem like RTD would make such a huge change unless there was a plan that he felt would pay off in the long run.

I’m guessing that the same way the two Doctors split each other’s clothes, the 14th kept all of the emotional trauma though the 15th obviously remembers it all. My theory is that the studio will use this as an excuse to keep using David Tennant from time to time. After all, he’s basically the crowning star of Dr Who, right alongside Tom Baker. Star Trek kept bringing in Leonard Nimoy for cameos for the same reason. When the time is right, and Ncuti (or another future Doctor maybe) regenerates again, they may have the two Doctors merge back into one. He’ll remember all of the new adventures he had, and also remember all of the years he spent with Donna.

I don't know how I feel about it either. I had read the leaks so I was expecting it and I think the ending lost some of its emotion impact as a result. Maybe if I had gone in blind I would feel differently. I had at least prepared myself for the idea coming into play even though I didn't like it. I wasn't a fan of when Clara "died" but then didn't and went off on her own adventures and this somehow feels worse because it's the main character. The leak seemed to explain it better than the show did. I'll have to watch it again to see what details I missed but it felt like it left a lot of unanswered questions. The leak suggested that 15 got pulled in from a later time so 14 still technically regenerates into 15, whereas the episode made that less clear. I think the therapy in reverse comment alluded to it but it all seems so unclear. When 14 dies, what happens exactly? Plus it keeps the shadow of Tennant looming over whoever comes after. At least before it drew a line under his run and except for specials we wouldn't expect to see him again but are people now going to keep calling for his return every time the show goes in a direction they don't like?

I think it would have felt like a more solid concept if they had given more time for a story to develop that hinted at a need for two doctors, or that hinted something could wind up being different about the regeneration. Then audiences would figure it out for themselves, when it occurred, instead of having one of the doctors declare "It's bi-regeneration" which felt like impatient and lazy writing. 'No mystery here; just bi-regeneration. I'm not even surprised, really. I'm ready to hop off into a TARDIS by myself and not worry about the implications.' Having said that, I admit that am not ready to lose David Tennant. I'm still greatly attached to Tom Baker!! I'd have him back in two hearts' beat.

I completely agree that Tennant should have regenerated directly into Ncuti. Maybe he could still have lived with Donna for a while, but then regenerated later, of natural causes/old age, then Ncuti appeared with the Doctor much recovered and revitalised. My favorite detail of the clothing at the end with the 2 Doctors is Ncuti got the shoes, and Tennant is shoeless for the entire game of ball. Perhaps the Doctor and Timelords are kind of like animals that can, without others to "mate" with, they can split to reproduce if they're the only ones of their species left? Idk. That might just be me grasping for straws. It kind of feels a bit like they did so that they can bring back one of the most popular Doctors in recent years in case people don't respond well to the new series. Like if it gets bad ratings, they can just bring in Tennant again.

I think the beautiful thing about regenerations in the past was that it allowed the Doctors to have closure on their life before changing into someone else. Matt Smith’s beautiful scene where he says “I’ll always remember when the Doctor…was me.” The bi-generation has much bigger implications according to RTD on the commentary: he said ALL Doctors have now bi-generated, if I understood right. It makes no sense to me. If you wanted Doctors to team up, time travel in the Tardis was always a way to achieve that. Possibly the only reason is that a Doctor can come back, they will look older (like Peter Davison) and the answer is bi-generation.

I enjoyed this episode but I can understand the fan frustration. Bringing back Tennant felt like a stunt to boost ratings for a show that has been foundering for the last few years, and the resolution felt like something that was meant to be fan-service... . . . . [SPOILERS] . . . . . . and as a way to continue to do stand-alone Tennant/Donna episodes separate from the main continuity--as I doubt neither would agree to a new multi-year contract that this stage in their careers. Having your cake and eating it too, kind of thing. Speaking for myself, I find the bi-regeneration thing less-than-satisfying because of the eating+having cake thing. It shows a lack of conviction and confidence in your new actor and writing.

I love Tennant. I really do. He was great as The Doctor. But this just feels like the new (old) showrunner not being able to let go of his favourite Doctor, which is extremely un-Doctor Who. We all love the current Doctor and are sad when they go, but we have to move on. Now it feels like the new Doctor is The Doctor with an asterix. He's half The Doctor, or a copy of The Doctor, which really sucks for the first black Doctor because you know that's a notion people who didn't ever want to see that will cling to. We ALREADY had a human clone of Tennant's Doctor off in an alternate universe, but that wasn't enough. RTD REALLY needs to let Tennant go. I also would've liked a far more clever way of defeating The Toymaker than...he missed a ball. Seriously??? Other than those two critical shortcomings, I did enjoy the special. The regular and recurring cast were great. NPH was great. It was weird that Tennant's Doctor seemed to imply that they only played one game before when Hartnell's Doctor acted like they'd met previously, but it had some great Doctor Who lines and the image of the Toymaker as an actual giant puppeteer (which Harris must've loved) was great.

With respect, I've survived Chibnall i can live with it. Nothing is as bad as what he did. The way he didn't treat Jodie Whittaker the way she deserved, with the lack of quality of writing for many of her stories and the timeless child shtick that actually ruined the canon. This is workable. I'd rather have a bit of fan service to popular doctors. That's what 60th anniversary specials are about.

None of 13's companions died or really suffered, which I think was the point of that scene, and it did mention the Flux. I kind of agree on the rest though. David Tennant should not have been brought back, let alone kept around with the bigeneration, but whatever. Definitely more excited for Ncuti now after having seen him here.

They were each wearing part of the outfit. Tennant had the undershirt, waistcoat and trousers. Gatwa had the shirt, tie, underwear and shoes.

Ugh, use your head, when they split, Ncuti took some of David Tennant’s clothes, thus why David Tennant lost his shoes, shirt and tie, and underwear, because Ncuti took the underwear, shoes and shirt and tie.

@@Chris-uu9me To be fair when you don't see it up close it does look like they are both wearing the same white shirt so I can understand the confusion.

Let's face it, the ONLY reason they did that was to have Ncuti to debut with no pants. Russell has lost the plot. 😂

@Chris-uu9me I don't like using my head when I watch T.V. I watch Doctor Who to relax. No need to be rude....I just asked.
