This episode has so many layers I want to write an essay about it. I love the twisted irony of the ending- Lindy couldn’t even WALK a few hours prior, but they’re all so confident that they’ll conquer the world. They haven’t been taught any useful survival skills, or even basic living skills. They’ve only been taught that they’re superior.

Just like so many real life colonisers throughout history, who ignored native people's knowledge of how to live in harmony with the land and instead sought to conquer it by force, because they believed in their own superiority.

I'm ashamed to admit that on first watch I didn't pick up on the lack of diversity with the characters, even though there were hints throughout with Lindy's reaction to the Doctor contrasting with her reaction to Ruby. I didn't feel the full bite until I saw Unleashed where they spelled it out for me. Once the penny dropped, I just wanted to give Ncuti a hug.

@@kc0itf man, there was no speech to say how wrong racism is or the doctor breaking his character, it was just characters being racist, the public getting angry, and the doctor ignoring it because he wanted to save them even though they were like that, because That's what he does, without trying to change them or impose any ideology on the public. There were soooo many overt and subtle signs of racism and prejudice scattered throughout the episode: 1. Lindy was revolted and blocked the Doctor when he first appeared on her feed. 2. Lindy didnt block Ruby. She was more receptive to Ruby when she appeared on her feed. Lindy spoke to Ruby and believed her over the Doctor. 3. When the Doctor appeared for the second time on her feed, Lindy asked him if the monsters "have something to do with you" (she didnt ask Ruby this, just the Doctor) 4. Lindy told her groupcall to listen to the Doctor and that "i know this is wrong and after this is all over he will be so disciplined, i cant wait, and he doesn't look as stupid as he looks" (of course due to the color of his skin) 5. No person of color lived in Finetime 6. Lindy was shocked to learn that Ruby and the Doctor were in the same room together in such close proximity 7. Lindy told the Doctor "Didnt I block you? I knew it. I just thought you looked the same, but you're the same person I blocked. I was so right to hate you." (Implying all black people look the same) 8. When they met, Lindy told Ruby and the Doctor "Gosh, you two, this is strange." (meaning a white and black person working together) 9. And a few more microagressions towards the Doctor before they met in the final scene AND in the final scene where the racism got blatant.

And in a small detail, at the end, she won't even look at the Doctor unless she's speaking directly to him, she specifically turns to only face Ruby.

Exactly. I think that was another point it was trying to make. White people would not see it as we are privileged to never have to endure it ourselves, out of sight out of mind. That is how we still are part of the problem, even when our hearts are good and we aren’t remotely racist, our daily ignorance is a big problem. The doctor is the last to realise what is happening because he has lived for so many lives as a white person.

Watching this again, I noticed something else... I THINK they were implying that the Doctor and Ruby in studying this world and these people, they knew that the society was ugly and racist and decided to try and save them anyway... some of the glances they make to each other... the fact that they set it up to look like they were in different rooms because they knew that him being in the same room with her would cause upset... etc... they just thought we can save them anyway.... because the doctor doesn't want to choose to let anyone die... but in the end even knowing that the doctor who shocked at how deep and how self-destructive their attitude ended up being.

73 yards is meant to show the value of Ruby as a companion, how this woman is causing her to be isolated from loved ones and those who tired to help her...but she keeps going, she has a moment of acceptance, then uses the same thing that had caused her so much pain to literally save the world

I literally couldn’t bear the supporting characters from the outset and I was struggling with this ep til the last 15 mins or so. I was actually relieved they went their own way but disappointed we didn’t see them get munched. Ricky was just about likeable til you consider it likely he’d have the same attitude if he’d survived to the end. Ncuti finally had a scene where I thought “yea he’s got it”, a good Doctor moment, but kudos to Millie too she really nailed “disgusted resignation” as she went back to the TARDIS. If the story’s lesson was a nip at the Ncuti haters I’m not sure it was strong enough, if it was a comment on racism it wasn’t subtle enough, if it was both I think it’s just given the trolls more sustenance.

It's a morality story about people who live in their own bubble and will not give it up or let anything or anyone in even if it means certain death for them. A lot of people are like that today. The real world was as fictitious as the happy people screens.

A few reasons why it feels rushed, one is the 8 episode seasons, that in my opinion is stupidly the norm for streaming services, but the other reason is the reason why we have seen so many Doctor-Light episodes, and that is, they didn't have as much time with Schuti as they would have liked, his previous show was still wrapping up so he was coming do Doctor Who, when time allowed him.. Personally, I think they should have put it off a bit longer, let him finish with that other commitment then have him fully commit to being the Doctor. but, meh....

I just thought of something, is something trying to actually turn the Doctor against humanity? First we had abandoning babies, then we had blind faith, now this, and that look of pure disappointment, its like something is pulling them along to see the worst of the worst of humanity.

@dupersuper1938 Where one could argue with that though is, with the Tochlophane, that could be the Masters manipulation. But these things, these are just humans. You gotta admit, that final look, and the way that music just sounded ominous, it really seemed like maybe his hope for humanity was waning, even just a little bit. I'm not saying I think they would succeed and make the Doctor like, abandon humanity completely but, that idea maybe of the Doctor making humanity fend for itself then have his companion kind of pull him out of that total darkness, could be interesting.

A warning to people, stop living your life through your phones. Do you remember the 12th Doctor's story "Thin Ice". He punched a racist in the face when he disrespected Bill. I'm reminded of the story "Voyage of the Damned" when that bastard Brixton survived and all the good people died.

Again, some of the weirdest stuff EVER seen in an episode of Doctor Who. A real nasty taste in the mouth at the end, with Lindy and the others rejecting the Doctor, for reasons that definitely imply racism, and prejudice in general. It's all well and good, but is it entertaining?? This is what I'm wondering... This era, it's like we're being bombarded by frustration, and no 'relief'? I dunno how else to phrase it. The heart(s) was much more present in Russell's first era.

Just a quick comment about 73 yards. Last week's episode was the best episode in 15 years. If we get more of that I'll continue watching, if we don't my viewing may go elsewhere. This episide was a massive let down for me, especially after the brilliant 73 yards. I'm setting the benchmark for every episode moving forward to 73 yards. I can't get over how last week's episode resonated with me....just a brilliant episide.

Just a thought after hearing other opinions about this episode. What if the character's objection to the Doctor is less race but age. Ruby is blonde yes, but also clearly within the Finetime age demographic. When describing Finetime Lindy said there were no 'stinky old folks' (over 27) there. She keeps acting like a teenaged brat and resents being 'treated like a child'. Maybe the idea is that it is primarily young people who are living in the bubble. Maybe racism is a projection from our own world and not that of the world that was built in this episode. It would explain the Doctor's frustration and his walking away at the end. Ultimately he couldn't fight immaturity. Like I said, just a thought...

No, it was racism. Purely from a meta level, we include people of colour even in historical episodes where people would argue with it (lol we had Newton gate not too long ago) and in this setting, where people of colour would have been entirely uncontroversial, everyone looked like they could have joined the Hitler youth. That's not even talking about all the clear hints earlier in the episode and the blatant racism at the end. Trying to explain it away as something else seems insane to me.
