Classic Doctors would occasionally meet up with each other like this. Usually one or more would recognise each other immediately (depending on the chronology). For classic fans this was an excellent trick as we would have recognised this trope and expected it to play out as before.

Which makes sense since Jackson only got a snapshot of the doctor’s life and all 3 of those people may have blended into 1.

And we're into the specials! Starting with a solid, fun episode and the return of the cybermen! Jackson Lake's character arc is great, albeit really quite sad, but it's nice that he gets to reunite with his son in the end, and go on with life having had a taste of the Doctor's world! I love that this time the Doctor finally gets all of the thanks and appreciation that he never once asks for every time he saves the day! He could probably use a bit of cheer after last episode.
@JoeThornhill4 ай бұрын
It's actually not all that solid, I'm afraid (which actually fits with most Christmas specials, lol). This is all just paraphrasing a video by 'orowen', but it's still true. At least with the Cyberman storyline. Never mind the fact that it abruptly interrupts the great and somber reveal of Jacksons story, near the end. It's another example of a writer not really understanding them. Instead of forcing all the people to be converted into Cybermen, the king ends up just killing a bunch of them by destroying London. They don't even convert the children, once they've got the king working. Because that's all the Cybermen are. Not aliens, warriors or monsters. They're just us. Wanting to take away all our pain by making us into them.
@gazzamanazza4pm4 ай бұрын
@@JoeThornhill Meh, I still have a good time with it. I wouldn't call it bad even if it's hardly a masterpiece like some episodes of this show. I should say though, regarding the Cybermen going on a destructive rampage once the King awakens - they were under Hartigan's control at that point, so they weren't following the standard cyberman operating procedures of taking people for upgrade. I guess Hartigan wanted to crush some of London instead. Why she wanted that is anyone's guess, but it does explain a thing or two to consider it that way.
@JoeThornhill4 ай бұрын
@@gazzamanazza4pm Yeah, I'm not really critical either, just end up learning a few things from the odd video essay (or reaction) or someone who actually has a degree in media literacy and therefore knows what they're talking about in their videos. I also kind of forgot about Hartigan's overall influence on the Cyber king. Hell, the ending reminded me that she wasn't the real Hartigan anyway. Who know how, when and why, but she hasn't been thinking straight for years. We don't even know the real Hartigan. But then, that's the B plot that doesn't really matter, though. It IS more about The Doctor and Jackson.

Compared to the ABSOLUTE FESTERING MANURE that RTD is writing these days, this episode, honestly, seems like a masterpiece. I have no problems with it at all. Sure, it takes a lot of liberties with science, but everything is explained. Things don't happen "for no reason" (unlike in the new series). The episode has a great concept that hooks you in, great performances, and the whole personal story is really compelling and emotional. It's a wonderful Christmas episode. RTD was GREAT back then. He revived the series so well and all these episodes were so good. It's just incredible to think this is the same man who now seems like a lunatic writing highly offensive gibberish that destroys the show and makes no sense at all.
@gazzamanazza4pm4 ай бұрын
@@Scripture-Man Can't really say I agree with you there. This era (as in 2005-2010) is my favourite of the show and the one I think is the best, but I still enjoyed the most recent season overall, at least more than I did Chibnall's time as showrunner. I don't agree with every writing choice RTD makes these days, but by and large the show feels fun to me again, and it feels more in keeping with the lore than some of the plot twists Chibnall wrote. I don't want to deep-dive into any of that here though since I don't want to risk spoiling anything for Jules as she reads the comments. Ultimately though, Doctor Who canon has always been a pretty loose thing, and I kind of like the way RTD has structured things now, where it's almost like everything and nothing is canon all at once, so just believe what you want. But hey, you do you, I've no right to tell you what to like. As long as you're not treading on anyone else's toes or complaining about the show having progressive politics (which it always has, since 1963), you're free to hate on the writing all you like. That said, I prefer to try and stay on the positive side, even if I'm not a fan of something. No reason to rain on others' parades as it were.

For many folks, Tennant was the favorite! This is why even all these years later, he is still popular! At the beginning of this episode, I thought this was going to be an interesting take on crossover Doctor episodes. In the past, there have been episodes called The Three Doctors, or The Five Doctors, etc., where previous Doctors (or stand-ins for those whose actors have passed already...) take part in a story arc. I thought this was going to be one where the guest Doctor was one we have not yet seen, but was already "planned" as the next Doctor. I did, however, think that Jackson was too much like Tennant's version to be a new Doctor! So when they both said "Allons y" (French for "Let's go!" Literally: Let's go there!" for those of you who don't speak French) I thought that this was some sort of copycat! Also, I am with you on how the episode was just a romp until the end, when we are reminded of the Doctor's lonely existence. It was a fun episode and a wonderful reaction! Thanks!

I'll admit, I often overlook this episode, but when I rewatched it last year I was reminded that it's pretty good. You have to imagine what the atmosphere was like when this first aired: Most Doctors stick around for about three years, that was the average, so during Season 4 there was a lot of speculation about David Tennant leaving. The production team had fun messing with these expectations, first with the fake-out regeneration, then with this Christmas special. You can imagine that people went crazy when the title was revealed. David Morrisey plays a perfect "Doctor who never was". Just a few years after this he'd find new fame for playing the fan-favourite villain, 'The Governor' in The Walking Dead. The episode itself is pretty great, it's nice to see the long-awaited return of the Cybermen and the whole "other Doctor" mystery takes some twists and turns and the answers are all quite clever and satisfying. It's also nice that it's the first Christmas Special not to be set on or above present day London. Oh and of course, this episode marks a significant New Who milestone: New Who's first Doctor montage. There are several classic stories that included these kinds of montages, but this was a first for New Who. I'm a simple man, so I always get excited by Doctor montages. I'm glad you liked this one Jules, now I can't wait to see what you think of the show's first Easter Special next week.

I used to enjoy Tom until the darker side of his personality, at least when it came to the show. The reason they had to use archival footage in the Five Doctors is because the BBC refused to restructure the story to make it revolve around his character, with a similar issue nixing a planned special for the show's 30th anniversary, and I think the 40th as well. On top of that is his derision of other actors who have played the role, having been quoted as saying of them, "I avoid them, you know. Not with any malice. A degree of contempt, perhaps but mildly, mildly contemptuous."

Hello, Jules.💜 I have to confess, I thought, my god. she's actually taking a break!... but no. I filled the gap with a rewatch of Holy Grail - just another classic reaction. 😉 Merry Christmas! 🍫 I remember my reaction to the start of this... Rosita yelling for the Doctor, even after he says I'm right here. What! What! I didn't do the 3rd one though... Rosita - a Rose like name, and a Donna like temperament!🤣 I don't have much to add on here. I have enjoyed this, and the previous, Christmas specials. They are always very Doctor Who, but seem, as you say, to capture the spirit, before moving on. And I'm not sure it would really be a Christmas Special without a tear, or two.🥲 "... a New Industrial Revolution.." I have always been reminded of the Temple of Doom in this one - rounding up the children, driving them down, into the underground, and having them do backbreaking, hot, nasty labor, in support of true evil. But this is another Christmas, another wicked human, failing the world. Many great moments here, the camaraderie between the Doctors. The look on your face, a the sonic screwdriver bit - it makes a noise! 😂The display of previous Doctors, many call backs, and the recap of his life with companions... Your summation, at 26:29, was exactly right! A great statement on the feelings which Christmas specials evoke. They are great 🥰 Before I end... a fine edit on this one. I know, since they are longer, they have more info, and will be trickier to slice up, but you've done just fine here!🥰 Have a great day, Jules 💜🤗💜- Good luck in all you do! Have a peaceful evening. Game away... enjoy the original Industrial Revolution! Tomorrow is Independence Day here, and it will be a mess, so I might opt to do some food celebrating tonight, to beat the crush. Or... I might just do what the Doctor would do... travel around, look at some stuff, whistle a bit, and maybe game away myself. 😊 Have Fun!🎇

Tom 😸💜 I did a silly and scheduled it for 7am instead of 6am! So, I had a small, unintended break indeed! I think all of these upcoming episodes are 1 hour or more, which is LOVELY when you don't have to edit them 🤣 I've been editing like mad these past two weeks but I keep imagining how nice it would be with a cleared out editing pile, which keeps me going! A wonderful Christmas special (Christmas in July!) and I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Tom. I do hope you have a quiet but lovely day of celebrations, with lots of food and good times 💜 Maybe you could arrange some nuts in the shape of fireworks for your little balcony buddies? They need something, too 😜 Enjoy, Tom, and stay safe 💜 Thank you for your kindness and the good mood you always leave me in. Very much welcome 🥰

I like this story, it's a great mystery, and tugs at the heart string... My main gripe is the same with a lot of New Who - You just had a MASSIVE Cyber King killing people in the middle of London in the 1800's. Classic WHO tended to have alien invasions taking place mostly without us humans being any the wiser. I LOVED that fact. Yes, it was probably purely down to saving costs - for £20k per episode in the classic era, it's hard to shut down a city and get footage for a proper full on invasion.... But it meant that all of these stories were taking place on "my" planet - not just some fictional Earth...

I think it's a truism for all of us in our lives. All the people we meet, know, love, lose. They all break our hearts. We break their hearts. For a timelord this fact is magnified by many orders of magnitude over their lives. Just to think of it this way Jules, you've only had the peak in through 9 and 10. They've only hinted at all the previous companions and doctors so far. 907 years old. That's a lot of life. The specials that follow, I haven't watched any of them, except for the last one, since they originally aired. I'm looking forward to this as its been about... 14 years, roughly?

I love Rosita so much! If there wasn't... well, an obvious difference in race, I would suggest that Rosita could be an ancestor of Rose, because they are SO similar, but for once in Doctor Who, I don't think there is a connection 😅 (Not a big fan of tis episode in general, but Rosita is awesome! 😅🤣)

This episode reminds me how immortality or even extremely long lifespans like the Doctor's can be a true curse. How else could you be over 900 being friends with compartively short lived species like humanity and not have your heart broken from losing friends?

Ok, you speak about it here at the end. And I remember, I chose not to say what I'm about to say now on the last video, but I realized now that it wouldn't make sense for me to not say it. I just wanted to say that I have a feeling that David Tennant and Donna are going to remain your favorite Doctor and companion. It's just a feeling I get based on seeing how much you love them and not based on me knowing what lies ahead. And my main point for saying this now is: What's waiting gonna do for me? 😅 The show is still RUNNING! There could still totally be a new Doctor, that *I* don't even know of yet that's going to completely throw off my theory.... So, yeah, for the time being, I THINK, 10 will stay your favorite....

@@julesreacts Just know, you're in good company. 👍🤝 The 10th Doctor is probably still the most famous one overall worldwide. He's not MY favorite. I actually have two different Doctors who have a special place in my heart(s). 😅 One of them is my FAVORITE Doctor. And the other one... is just "MY" Doctor. The one that can never change. Favorite Doctor can change for me and it already has once..... I'll mention it when the time comes. Same as with favorite Buffy episode and season... 👍

Unfortunately I already knew the future of the series enough to know that this episode was a little misleading, but still a fun one nonetheless! David Tennant is one of my favorites as well, my other favorite is the Fourth Doctor from classic Who. It does hurt when Doctors change or companions leave, especially when you grow so attached. Looking forward to the next episode, thank you as always!
@Mercure2504 ай бұрын
You're absolutely right, it's sad to see a Doctor or companion go, yet we also get the joy of discovering the new one. That's the beauty of this series. As someone says in a future episode (not gonna say who, not gonna say which episode, because spoiler) : "Everything ends, and it's always sad. But everything begins again too, and that's always happy."

I can only imagine how people who grew up with classic Who felt losing Sarah Jane and later Tom Baker. They were both there for so long...
@gestaltdude4 ай бұрын
@@GeneralDingo Regarding Sarah Jane, losing the upcoming characters (the married ones) after their run would I think be comparable. It not often a companion lasts more than a season. Ian and Barbara stayed for two. Jamie and Tegan are the only companions to have stayed nearly the length of a Doctor's run, each missing out by only a story or two. Jo Grant was there for three of Pertwee's five seasons, and SJ of course had something like three and a half seasons across two Doctors. Romana is a strange one because there were two versions across nearly three seasons.

They love to tease us. Very good achievement. :) The long a Doctor the more interesting the next one/hard but fair to adjust but also very strong performance episodes these. The amount of moments they make us go oh that and to not spoil when so soon episodes or series later things happen. It's always fun and makes me smile how they tease the audience and we wait patiently. It's a good show to react to for sure. This is a pretty fair episode of details. Fair particles guess but yeah no. Would have been fair if they did that but yeah some fair 4 episode scenarios they present before S5. Yeah Rosetta hmm. A fair Doctor besides the consequences he had. Fair guesses. I forget if intended of the kids to convert after done or let them go or take them. You are he weakest link I assume or just the way the voice editing is no idea if the same actor.

At the time that this episode originally aired it was already widely publicized that David Tennant was leaving the show. So, calling the episode "The Next Doctor" was a serious bit of misdirection that implied he might be regenerating here. I wonder if that misdirection might be a part of why this episode is not as highly regarded as some others from this period.
