@@joeb918 not all TV. The new game of thrones has done extremely well. Stranger Things? Cobra Kai? The Boys? When writing focuses on the story and characters first. The show does well. If you want an agenda in that. Do it last. If it's the first focus it won't be good.

Yes, even house of the Dragon. Viewership is down. So are rating scores. A cursory googling tells me that Game of Thrones had a viewership 44 million for its final season, (which is considered its worst) and House of the Dragon had 29 million. Also, GoT has a 9.4 score on IMDb, HotD has a 8.4 rating. So yes, it’s also lower. I will also say that there are some shows of late that for some reason are getting a lot of review fudging through review bombing and hate bandwagoning, and yes it review bombing can happen on both sides with one side giving all 1s and one giving all 10s, but there is of late an extreme level of hate coming from one side bashing everything that they deem woke, or too liberal, any many of them either were asleep while watching these shows in the past or they never have to begin with. Or something has overly radicalised them to hatred of certain things.

Also, some of these complains about putting an agenda first and story second was lobbed at the 2005 return of Doctor Who as well. That it wasn’t the same show they enjoyed in the 60-80s, which also has been said of Star Trek, every incarnation of Star Trek after the original has had some group of fans who have said, this isn’t my ST or it doesn’t do this so it’s not true Star Trek. For TNG it was because it wasn’t about Kirk, Spock and McCoy, when DS9 some fans complained it wasn’t Trek because it wasn’t on a starship, and they wanted a captain like Picard not this dark (in more ways than one) Commander Sisko… and on and on…. Every show has its people who complain complains about the newest incarnation, and they’ll find some excuse to do so and it’s usually recycled ones. Now it’s DW is too woke and Disney is ruining it and they’re pushing agendas.

You may not recall but all the way back in the Fires of Pompeii two soothsayers were having a back and forth over The Doctor and Donna, and one of them says to her "you have something on your back". Once you've finished the season, that's a good scene (as is the parting scene with the Ood in the episode of Planet of the Ood) to go back and watch just to see all the foreshadowing RTD was laying down. There are two types of Doctor Who fans. Those who like Donna, and those that are wrong.

Man, the way Donna's mum Sylvia just sinks into despair over the course of this episode... you just watch her face slacken, the light go out of her eyes... As you’ve probably figured out, this episode was filmed at the same time as Midnight, so this is what Catherine Tate was up to while David Tennent was on his tour bus. On Rose sounding a bit different, the actual reason for it seems to mostly come down to the fact that Rose’s accent isn’t Billie Piper’s natural one, and after a few years of not using the Rose accent it took her a while to completely get the hang of it again. According to Billie, the fact that this episode was filmed in the middle of winter and the jacket she had on was tiny didn’t help. Personally, I thought it had the side effect of making her sound more like the Doctor in her speech patterns, which kind of really works for the episode- as Rose finds herself pushed more into the Doctor’s role she starts unconsciously mimicking his mannerisms.

I believe part of the "Rose sounded a bit different" is also due to the dental work that occurred in her time away, that certainly contributed to a little on a fundamental level. It's weird, at the time there was a bunch of awful criticism in regards to that but for her appearance, sadly. I never noticed her sounding different back then, but I did in this reaction many years later!

This is one of my favourite episodes. I can't help but get emotional at the part where Donna is literally screaming "What can I do?!" to Rose. You can see how years of being criticised so heavily by her mum in this timeline has degraded her own opinion of her self-worth to the point where she literally doesn't see herself as special in any way whatsoever, and results in her being self-critical now too.

I have five favorite companions, though two of them aren't in the TV show either in Classic *or* New Who. Funny thing is, they're actually kind of similar to two of my other favorites that were in New Who. Charlotte "Charley" Pollard, a companion from the Big Finish audio plays who was basically the Eighth Doctor's Rose, and Lucie Miller, who was basically Eight's Donna. Charley, in fact, got to hear the three words that no other Doctor has given to anyone else. "I love you." My headcanon is that the Doctors after Eight were so reluctant to say it to anyone else because of the pain of Eight and Charley's parting. He finally said "I love you" to someone, and it all went wrong, so he won't do it again if he can avoid it. And Lucie is definitely Eight's Donna. Brash, outspoken, AWESOME lady who put up with no crap from the Doctor, and who ends up being a great friend to him. My favorite TV companions are Rose, Donna and a later companion who I'll wait until later to say. Spoilers and all that.

@primevmegatronTf
@primevmegatronTf 4 ай бұрын
@@theoroderick782well without the doctor pretty much everything went to hell, when the hospital was taken everyone died except that medical student, the south of England was nuked by the Titanic which forced the government to relocate everyone who survived to the north of England, the adipose thing happened in America which prevented the US from sending financial aid and the Atmos stuff resulted in the deaths of the torchwood team and presumably others before it was stopped. All of this led the British government to decide that they were either unable or unwilling to have foreigners living in the UK so they passed a new law to outlaw foreigners but they couldn’t deport them as the other countries had closed their borders so instead they created ‘labour camps’ which are heavily implied to actually be ‘death camps’ and anyone sent to these would be killed, Wilf’s line “labour camps, that’s what they called them last time. It’s happening again” is in reference to the Nazis who tried to do the same thing during World War Two as they built death camps to exterminate Jews but disguised them as labour camps to keep them from panicking until it was too late. TLDR: without the Doctor everything went wrong and the British became just like the Nazis

Clicked on this within seconds of it appearing! It's one of my absolute favourite episodes. The seer in Pompeii told Donna she had something on her back right at the beginning of the series! Donna is such a beautiful soul; I love how the writers emphasize the value of ordinary people too. The world without the Doctor is terrifying, but Donna in despair and the mention of "labour camps" are the most heartbreaking aspects of the story for me. Billie Piper had some dental work done shortly before filming and that affected her voice! In interviews she has also spoken about having to watch her old performances to find the accent again; her real voice is much posher. It's more like what we hear when she's playing Cassandra at the beginning of Series 2!

Really? Huh, I never thought her voiced changed, I thought she was just playing a more tired, battle exposed older rose Tyler. Inarguably, in my opinion, Doctor Who's darkest episode. At the time the spinoffs were in full swing, and over the course of the episode they went out of their way to kill absolutely all the heroes from all of them. I don't think you'd know this without having seen it but Sarah Jane's group who died in the hospital were all teenage children. And everything else aside I don't think there will ever be a more heartbreaking moment than the reference to labour camps. I suppose the one tiny bit of optimism is the crew of the Titanic evidently managed to do something heroic all on their own, since the original episode stated it would wipe out the entire planet if it crashed.

Among all the Doctor's incarnations, I think Ten might be one who goes through the most extreme emotional roller coaster - Not necessarily the highest highs or lowest lows, mind you, that I think will always be a matter of viewers' personal opinion - but definitely the one who was forced to fluctuate between joy and despair so damn *quickly*. One of these tricksters shows up in The Sarah Jane Adventures and changes her life to try create alternate realities. You asked last week why Donna wasn't really in that episode, and I deliberately didn't answer it because of this episode. During this period of Doctor Who, they were basically trying to make 14 episodes in the time it takes to make 13 (a 13 episode season + The Christmas Special) and the way they did that was to 'double bank' two episodes - film two episodes at once, essentially. In S2 and 3 this was done by having a guest star take over the show for an episode while another episode was filmed with the Doctor and companion as usual, and then the Doctor and companion would be in that other episode for a day or two of filming or so as basically a guest appearance in their own show - S2 did it with Eliot in Love & Monsters, S3 did it with Sally Sparrow in Blink. S4, instead, chose to have an episode with basically just the Doctor - Midnight - double banked with an episode with basically just the companion - Turn Left. So, to answer the question you asked last week, why Donna wasn't in that one? Catherine Tate was filming this episode while David Tennant was filming that episode.

@@obiwankenobi687 A quick cheap episode (well, as close to that as Doctor Who ever gets), yes, but it wasn't double banked. There was an initial idea to have The Long Game as a doctor-lite episode in that run, but that wasn't for double banking that was to give Eccleston and Piper a couple of weeks off shooting, but RTD felt he was missing the Doctor and Rose bouncing off of each other so kept adding more of the two of them in, reducing Adam's role in the narrative - As I recall, he's since stated he regrets not having gone fully into making it focused on the Doctor and Rose or resisting that urge and keeping the episode fully focused on Adam, describing Adam as his character in search of a writer, I think was the term he used - A character where his writing decisions did them a disservice.

I had a stomach bug, and instead of forcing me to use a public toilet at the supermarket, my mom took my sister and me home. Our spontaneous friends, who were in San Fran, intending to come over to Piedmont to take us all out to a big dinner because traffic was light due to the World Series, but for some reason she called ahead instead of making it a surprise like she was want to do, and because I was sick and we were home to answer the phone, they rescheduled. This was Oct 17th, 1989 btw. Our friends would have been crossing the Bay Bridge during the Loma Prieta earthquake if we hadn't been home to answer the phone and I hadn't been sick to postpone their visit.

Fun Fact the lady who plays the fortune teller (Chipo Chung) played Chantho in series 3. This episode is very interesting to me and interestingly enough Lucius remarks about something being on her back in the fires of Pompeii. A few things coming back in this episode and tying into Torchwood and the Sarah Jane crew being mentioned as well as characters from Series 4 including the soldier saying the doctor was dead being in the sontaran two parter. Plus the master never becomes prime minister either I just love how far it goes back with all these episodes and how much of a difference Donna made and yet how England and The UK would react is scarily accurate. Wilf crying about the family getting sent off to concentration camp because of course he was a soldier it broke his heart that it was happening again. He absolutely sells it

I would have loved to see your reaction to Rose mentioning the Doctor's " *great* hair." 😄 But, yes, an obscure office temp made all the difference in the whole of creation. At the time the Doctor destroyed the Racnoss (yes, you remembered the name well), it was clear that suicidal thoughts were in his head really thick-still traumatized over losing Rose which to him was worse than death, then having to resort to genocide yet again to save Earth from genocide, he lost his will to live. It was only Donna who snapped him out of it and got him out of the sewers in time. Not a spoiler at this point, only an explanation of what we already saw to this point. When she said, "I think you need someone to stop you," little did she know that she would be that someone. I really love watching your reviews; the way they affect you reminds me of a friend of mine who's also a Whovian, but she saw all these stories years before, possibly before even I discovered the revival of the series. Being that this review is only a week old and the last one on the playlist so far, I'm caught up now and looking forward to carrying on with you through the series...especially with this story arc continuing, since the Easter egg has now hatched. 😉 Until next time! I'll keep vigil.

Donna is still my favourite 21st century companion, though there have been some very strong contenders. And this is such a beautifully dark episode. My favourite moments are Sylvia's dead eyes as she agrees that Donna's always been a disappointment, and the labour camps scene. I was a "late arrival": my parents were adults during the war (my dad a staff sergeant in the British Army, my mum a nurse), so it has always felt closer to me than it has to most of my contemporaries; and I can really relate to Wilf's reaction. It makes me cry every time, albeit briefly.

Catherine Tate's acting in this is phenomenal in my opinion. I always choke up watching the scenes where she's talking to Rose (especially when she goes back to the moment that was changed) and especially when she's "realizing" what she has to do only to be told again she has to die. Such perfectly done emotion wise and with the music it's just about perfect. And let's face it, the scene with the Doctor at the end when she's remembering Rose and Bad Wolf, I get goosebumps every single time. And as others have mentioned, the "Labor camps, that's what they called them the last time" "It's happening again" makes me bawl my eyes out.

Such a great episode! Love the exploration of the butterfly-effect; what a brilliantly horrifying "what-if" concept! And, it plays a very interesting role in Donna's character arc, as she continues to struggle to see her own worth. The Doctor mentioned that the beetle was "one of the Trickster's brigade". The Trickster is a recurring antagonist on The Sarah Jane Adventures, and appears in some of that show's best episodes.

5:15 Luke, Clyde and Maria are from The Sarah Jane Adventures it's a spin off more aimed at Children but it's pretty good. 17:22 The Trickster is a Villain from The Sarah Jane Adventures I like how season 4 brings in the spin offs even if the timeline doesn't quite match up. Spoilers for the Sarah Jane adventures Smith and Jones takes place in June 2008 and London was destroyed on Christmas 2008 in the turn left time line so we have a 6 month span of Sarah being dead but any Sarah Jane stories can still happen since they all take place in London. (Just without Sarah Jane) Invasion of the Bane takes place before hand I guess but Revenge of the Slitheen should take place in September 2008 since they're going back to school. Which means in the Turn Left timeline there was nobody to stop the Slitheen from switching off the sun but I guess we can say Unit did that shit. Idk. But then we have the Episode "Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane Smith" Mr. Smith is the only person who can detect and stop that meteorite, so without Sarah the world is destroyed.

Lovely to have you back again Juliette. I look forward to these videos now! :-) It's been pointed out that Billie Piper (Rose) had forgotten how to do Rose's accent when she filmed this, and had to go back and watch old episodes to remember. But that's not the main reason she sounds different - the actress had some kind of dental surgery at the time, possibly to reduce her overbite, and apparently had veneers on her teeth at the time. This "Rose" also seems more confident, no doubt the result of her having spent the past few years working for (perhaps leading) the alien-hunting organisation Torchwood in the parallel universe.

As everyone has said, a stone-cold classic from RTD. I want to say so much about the present but I won't. But here's proof that once upon a time, a certain man could write extraordinary stories. I ADORE this episode, one of the absolute best. There's SO MUCH I could say and ramble and gush about this, it's so full of so much rich and wonderful stuff, but I'll try to stick to the main points: The spin off shows 'Torchwood' and 'The Sarah Jane Adventures' were both well established by this point, so Rose referencing Jack and SJ and mentioning their friends/teams is a nice call out to the connected universe, and a subtle introduction of their existence to anyone that hasn't watched those shows. This episode does a really good job of exploring the impact The Doctor and his friends have, not only how terrible things could get without him. but how his allies try to carry on/fill in for him. The ripple effect and just how many things change is brilliant, like his allies fix what they can but none of them were aboard the Titanic so it still crashes, Miss Foster chooses to take the Adipose to America because Britain is in crisis, but everything with The Master never happens because it was only made possible by The Doctor ending up at the end of the universe which of course they now never do! It shows us what makes a companion special, like yeah they're mostly 'ordinary people' when they meet the Doctor, but they have POTENTIAL, and he brings out the best in them, helps them be extraordinary. It reminds us that yes, The Doctor is special, a powerful, wise, and ancient being who looks after the universe, but you don't have to be all that to TRY. Anyone ordinary COULD be extraordinary, if they try to be. The Doctor is drawn to people they feel are more likely to try. And yes, that's absolutely helped by the TARDIS, who's knowledge of all of time and space allows her to take him where he needss to be, and sometimes to who he needs too. People noticing the beetle on her back, DW has established that some humans are slightly psychic (I think explained as having a few more synapses open?) like Tim hearing the watch talk and having visions in the Human Nature story, and Gwyneth from The Unquiet Dead knowing Rose had 'something of the wolf about her' and being able to channel the Gelth. It's that latent Psychic potential that the Pyrovillians were able to awaken and enhance to create Seers. The Doctor explains at some point that becoming a Time-Traveller/exposure to the time vortex/The TARDIS makes you more aware of/somewhat immune to changes to time etc, which explains why Rose can see it. Bad Wolf being the words Rose scattered through time as a warning and suddenly being everywhere again is SUCH a good cliffhanger, and means/implies so much! I have more but this is so long haha thank you for your wonderful reaction, I've been looking forward to this and it's my favourite Finale next!
