Do I have to listen to Sullivan and Cross AWOL to understand far from home?

Personally, I'd say no. There's clearly some context to Harry and Naomi and their relationship with UNIT that takes place before "AWOL" (I think it was a 'Stranded' boxset that called Harry a "Man out of time"). I recommend a 10-15 minute look at their TARDIS wiki pages and then jump straight into 'Far From Home'.
