@@kaspartambur More so the series came very close to being stuck in limbo/hiatus (rumors say they were going to end it on a cliffhanger of the Doctor regenerating, but that hasn't been confirmed or denied as far as I'm aware). Russell T. Davies was basically the only hope for it continuing.

This is quite good and respectful of the past. But I'll always default to Delia Derbyshire's 1963 original because of the skill it took her to make it and the technology of the time.

The beauty of the Doctor Who theme it is so recognisable. Everyone knows it. Thanks must go to Ron Grainer who composed it or was it Delia Derbyshire ? I get excited whenever I hear it. I remember buying the Pyramids of Mars and hearing the Doctor Who theme tune used for the brilliant Tom Bakers first 6 years. The early stories hadn't been repeated until there release on Video. I loved buying the Doctor Who videos and reliving that story again and again.
@IantheCripple2 жыл бұрын
it was Delia Derbyshire and the BBC's radiophonic workshop making history
@sixstanger002 жыл бұрын
Ron Grainer composed it, but Derbyshire is responsible for the iconic synthesized sound; Grainer originally intended the theme to be produced using conventional instruments (like other programmes at the time), but Derbyshire literally created the theme by recording various sounds on tapes, then cutting/pasting them together and adjusting pitch, oscillation, etc. The final version consisted of up to six different tracks playing simultaneously and being recorded to a master. Derbyshire is still severely underappreciated for her experimental work in synthesized music. Keep in mind that there were no conventional synthesizers back then; Derbyshire needs to be recognized for the pioneer she was. She was about 10 years before of the 70s techno group _Kraftwerk,_ who are largely credited for pioneering the synth genre. But unlike Kraftwerk, Derbyshire had no Mini Moogs or Rolands to work with. There is a documentary on KZbin with interviews with her regarding the creation of the DW theme. In it she talks about how she had to work at night after everyone else had gone home because she needed to lay out the lengths of tape down the halls. That's why it annoys me to no end when fans of Jodie Whittaker suggest that women haven't made major contributions to DW in the past. The series' globally recognizable theme was literally produced by a woman. Likewise, the first season of DW was produced by Verity Lambert. If not for her, there probably wouldn't have been any DW past _"An UnEarthly Child."_

@@sixstanger00 i appreciate your response. Am I right in saying that Derbyshire created the famous sound of the tardis materialising and dematerializing using piano cords ? Ron Grainer was also famous for the Steptoe and Son theme tune.
@sixstanger002 жыл бұрын
@@johntaylor6345 I'm not sure Derbyshire is responsible for the TARDIS sound, as she handled the theme music. Brian Hodgson was responsible for sound FX for the series in 1963. The Radiophonic Workshop was actually used for sound FX, but since Derbyshire's arrangement required using sounds to product musical tones, she had to work in the Radiophonic Workshop instead of a separate department for music. The original DW theme is in effect, a combination of various sound FX spliced together to create music. The dawn of synthesized music.

@@johntaylor6345 Not sure. Definitely done by slowing down the sound of a key being scraped against piano wire though.
