I never realized this before but the string usage from 0:45 kind of sounds like the Master's uppy-downy strings from his theme in Series 3 and the End of Time. It may be coincidence but it musically shows how similar the Doctor and the Master are and why they were friends in the first place. They have the same beliefs but use them in different ways. I love how it starts with all the strange strange creatures. It makes it feel almost like business as usual at first. “The doctor figured out a solution and now he’s here to heroically save the day” But then the flood knocks, and we realize the headspace the doctor is in, the music switches. He’s doing this for himself more than the crew on the station. He’s trying to prove that he is more powerful than the laws of time because if he is, then he can also defy HIS approaching death. And then the flood scream, almost personifying some horrifying beast that is hunting the doctor, and he has made very angry with his attempt to undermine it. This is proooobably my favorite doctor who moment, but I’m a 10th doctor simp. I ain’t even ever seen a single 4th doctor episode.

Despite all of the "The Time Lord Victorious is wrong!", I actually...think 10 did something correct, here. While his end stance of "I can do no wrong, nothing can stop me, I'm the winner" was over the top, Mia and Yuri would have died if not for him. Adelaide could have been taken somewhen else, far into humanity's future, and given a fresh start without interrupting anything else. Saving Mia and Yuri, despite the proclamation that they were "little people", is a good thing. Those are two people who got to lead full lives, that otherwise would've been tragically cut short. Plus, their knowledge of The Flood would likely allow humanity to better prepare for future Martian missions, thereby cutting down upon later casualties. Timelord VS Time is an incredibly interesting theme, and honestly one I could've rallied behind as the core outline for an entire series. If there was another series between 4 and 5 (...beyond the half-series of specials, shoosh), this is something I would've enjoyed. The Timelord Victorious may be wrong, but I would've loved to see the Doctor come to some partially-utilitarian compromise. Maybe everyone can't be saved, but who is to say you can't cheat the fixed points in time? Save Mia and Yuri, let them inform humanity of the dangers posed by the Flood, and give Adelaide a second chance at life: show her, personally, the results of her steadfast dedication to reach for the stars.

Yeah, the intervention wasn't what was wrong. It was the arrogance that came with it. And I think the Doctor realizes that, and its why he's so shaken at the end. Adelaide didn't die because it was fate. She died because he screwed up.

@@antonbrakhage490 I agree with you that Adelaide killed herself not because it was fate, but because she just wanted to. As proven a plenty of times before and after the Waters of Mars, the fixed points can be changed if you really try to do that. She killed herself because a) she wanted her daughter to still follow her steps, and she knew it would highly likely not happen if she stayed alive, and b) she was frightened that the Doctor would keep on changing time to what he wants. The Doctor hasn't got enough wisdom for that. Despite what the person that tried to hack the universe in School Reunion says, the Doctor would not manage to decide what would be truly good for the universe. Probably, no one would manage that.

That would fit so well with the Doctor's mission of making not just people, but *history* better. I can't help but think if he'd had Rose and/or Donna with him, it would've ended like that - he saves the few people he can, takes Adelaide to the future so she can reap the benefits of her sacrifice, and lets things progress from there with the core of the fixed point intact.
