I visited this magnificent property 25 times in the 70s and 80s, and always told everyone that this was my favorite place on earth. In May 1990, my wife Cory and I were married in the great room with the organ playing in the background. What a day!

I grew up right behind there on Castle Hill Rd. As kids we went everywhere in that place and even got to swim in the pool a few times. Nothing like having a castle to play at in your back yard.

I wish someone would come forward and fund the repair of the pipe organ that has been down since the mid 70s. It would be the greatest gift for public enjoyment.

The organ played well after the 1970s but was shut down in the early 2000s.

WOW...I was born and grew up in CT, and NOWHERE in all of the history taught in our schools, is ANYTHING this amazing, mentioned. CT's Gillettes Castle has NOTHING on this amazing structure. I'll DEFINATELY make this a MUST see next time my family and I are in Mass. for a visit. Incredible, thanks for sharing

I first visited the castle on a sunny Sunday morning. I returned to tour it the following dreary, rainy Monday. Each visit was perfect in its own way.

My choir director from our church would play the organ and our choir got to sing in the castle, wish I knew what year in the 60's probably. It is such an interesting place to visit!

One of my most fondest memories was taking a tour through this beautiful castle. I thought it was cool that he had pieces of broken glass cemented on the top of his stone fence.

I've been there as well, and was also disappointed that places such as the dungeon were inaccessible to the public at the time of my visitation. There is just something about castles that seem to contain so much mystery. Thank you for sharing this history with us!

They played to organ when i was there back in '92' & it was beautiful. I have a home video of our visit to Mass, the tour we took in this castle is on it & can also hear the organ being played too.

Thanks for watching! I love comments like this. I can imagine what your father thought of the miniature boats chasing people in the harbor before anyone knew about that technology. Thanks for sharing the memory
@falica779 жыл бұрын
He launched those miniature boats and did research @ Point Radio, the house on Western Ave. you can see from Stage Fort Park. His parents house, once owned by Cardinal Cushing and later sold to the Moonies. was in back of Point Radio, Hammond's first home before the castle. I lived in the guest cottage on the property from 91-93 when the owner, a woman from Brookline sold the home for 800K. I had to move. : ( I still miss it. 160 Western Ave.

Sad to hear the organ no longer plays, I was lucky enough to hear it on multiple Halloweens as a castle cast member volunteer back in the eighties, as well as during a. High school theater production. And yes, the dungeon was used for the Halloween haunted castle tour (one year I inhabited a cell, one year a bedroom, another year tickets...)

I completely agree! I am sensitive to spirits and can definitely feel Mr. Hammond and his wife's presence there. My boyfriend is English and I felt Mr. Hammond was hanging around him during our visit since Mr. Hammond spent time in England as a child and collected so much from there. I have also felt really strong negative energies when I went there but I think it is more to do with many items he collected that are carrying residual energy :-( I am fascinated with this place and man.

Where did you hear that? Hammond was into some weird stuff but I personally have never heard anything like that.

I am here because I had a dream I visited a haunted house with a group...and on a banner before we got through the gates it said Gloucester. I am just creeped out it is a real thing. I've never heard the word Gloucester before the dream. I only remembered it because it was an odd name.

Would you or anybody who has visited hammond castle think it could be haunted? Such as feeling energies or paranormal experiences? Im going sometime soon to explore and try to do a bit of ghost investigating so if anyone has advice or places to look for? Or very active rooms?

One of of my buddies who grew up in Gloucester told me that when they were transporting a piece of the castle from overseas, either the boat sank or the piece of the castle fell off the boat and is at the bottom of the ocean. Can anyone confirm that?
@johnroper1552 Жыл бұрын
The castle was built locally and only incorporates decor and architecture elements from overseas.

Vsited Gloucester many upon many times since the 80's. Hammond Castle every time there, hours looking at every detail. Ive read the comments, all are true. Ive talked with ppl whom knew Dr Hammond, and know many secrets of his beloved castle, hidden doors, special secret guest room, pool, his cats were sacred to him. The great hall, held many "gatherings" to summoned spirits, as well as dinner guests, which he delighted in serving his guests creepy food on purpose to get a rise. I might add, many of Dr. Hammonds priceless posessions, antiques, original laboratory, books, his personal notes, were actually taken stolen by the Catholic church when they had the castle in their possession for a number of years, they were not sold to upkeep the castle as you say video. Catholic church has taken Hammond possessions to their archives, .....believed hidden in Boston, and across the world hidden from view. Hammonds personal bedroom (upper floor) is no longer there bc of a fire, many years ago. His lab, library, two guests rooms, kitchen are nothing like they originally were. Sadly, about 80% of castle decor there displayed is not/never was Dr. Hammond and was purchased by the new corporation and is for decorating purposes only. Its beautiful, grand, mystique and yes, very much haunted by Hammond himself, but not his wife ...she disliked the castle very much and stayed most of her time painting upstairs, reading and traveling. Hammond purposely married a very much older women bc did not want any children. Ensuring that, his chosen wife was very past her "stage". They were both into mysticism, witch craft, after life. It was against his wishes according to his Will, that his body was ever to be moved, sadly it was, so the property could be sold and house built. So much more went on in that castle .....it could take me months to tell what was shared with me. Ty for your video just the same.
@AlexS-ei7kp3 жыл бұрын
Cool comment thanks for the info. I lived in Gloucester for only a few months a few years ago. Always wanted to do a tour but the castle was closed for some reason. There is definitely a mystical feeling even walking up to it and seeing it from the outside, or seeing it from the water from a boat.
@johnroper1552 Жыл бұрын
This is mostly categorically untrue. Hammond’s bedroom is still extant and used for storage for example. Rumours like the ones stated here have circled for decades - do not believe them.

im watching Ghost Hunters right now and they said something about John Hays Hammond Jr. wanting to be reincarnated into a black cat, and years after his death, black cats have been seen wondering the castle, living black cats, not ghost cats, i must know more!
