I was a national level competitor for some time in a shooting sport discipline. You commonly engage targets anywhere from arms reach to 50 meters away and everything in between. It was time and accuracy focused. Fast and accurate wins. I read an article from an olympic shooter about eye exercises. You were doing some of them in your video. I always felt really good afterward. I felt the same after I would do a good long distance run, that exercise high you get. To me, it felt as if it did help, especially numerous quick transitions back and forth, near to far, etc. I would certainly appreciate your extrapolation of this. These days, I do these exercises at work every now and again. The eye strain from a computer feels greatly diminished. Thank you o/

Hey thanks! This brings up a very good topic that I have not covered on the channel. There is a niche in the eye care world called Sports Vision. Which is legit training that professional athletes will go through to train the eyes and coordination based on how you can see. I know of pro hockey teams, baseball teams and even boxers who go through this training. Many pro teams have their own eye doctors who work for them. Kinda nuts. Maybe I can get a doc who specializes in it to help me do a video.

I had lasik 20 years ago. And a few years ago I got glasses again. I could see 20/20 without glasses, but 20/15 with glasses, I wore them simply when at the computer. I could see fine without glasses, but see better with glasses. My vision slightly worsened and I went to get a new prescription and new glasses. My new prescription hurt my eyes, at first but I still only wore them at the computer. Now, a month later, I simply can not see anything without glasses that 1 month ago I could still see. Road and business signs are now unrecognizable. That isn't a distorted memory of simply "not seeing as well without glasses" it's a blurry fact that my eyesight has drastically shifted for the worse over the last month.

I used to have -1.00 (for far distance) but the past few months I would have headaches like crazy or even throw up. My dad would say things like "you are spending too much time on your phone" etc. Last month I figured out that even with the glasses I couldn't see the letters on tv which made me skeptical and I started asking the people next to me whether they can or cannot see sth that I couldn't see. Turns out it increased to -2.5 and I got new glasses. I decided to learn more about my eyes and how to use my glasses properly etc. Even though english is not my 1st language your channel is extremely helpful and you pronounce the words so clearly that its easy for me to understand. Glasses when used for anything other than distance viewing will make your eyes worse. If you can see a computer screen fine without glasses, wearing glasses is putting a strain on the eyes. Minus lenses can induce more myopia; in fact, there are even lenses that are weaker on the side to induce lens myopia in children... There are many studies in animals where putting on a minus lens causes myopia, and removing the minus lens makes the eyes go back to normal. It's pretty clear what the stimulus minus has in the eyes... and the doctor is 100% sure that glasses (minus lenses) don't make myopia worse?! This makes me sad... In old cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions, several layers of shielding worked together to block most of the X-rays emitted from the tube before they could reach the viewer. However, while these shielding measures were effective in significantly reducing X-ray exposure, they didn't eliminate it entirely. Studies from the era suggest that even with proper shielding, some low-level X-ray leakage could still occur, especially at very close viewing distances.
@Hornet135 Жыл бұрын
Basically the X-rays that may be emitted by CRTs are hundreds of times less than the background radiation in the environment. So the idea that CRTs will cause radiation poisoning or cancer is ridiculous.

Very close computer screen distance forces the eyes to focus at the near point of convergence. This sustained stare puts stress on the vision system. Over time, it may reduce the eyes' ability to quickly change focus between near and far objects. The extent of long-term impact on the eyes' focusing ability from regular computer use is still an area of ongoing research. Additionally, while the evidence is less conclusive, some studies suggest blue light might affect the ciliary muscle's function, potentially contributing to fatigue and difficulty focusing.

In my left eye I went from -2.5 to -.75. I do follow some of the end myopia groups ideas because I absolutely did not need glasses. If you were indeed overcorrected, it was likely because the doctor did not use any form of cycloplegia (eye drop we use to stop your inner eye muscle from over-accommodating), in addition to a few other factors. Either way though, glad you eventually got things figured out.

Funny how once you are on the glasses train you usually get stronger and stronger prescriptions. Theory being that as the vision gets accommodated by the stronger lens the muscles get weaker and on and on.
@DoctorEyeHealth Жыл бұрын
I know it can seem that way, but the ciliary body inside the eye is a smooth muscle and does not change tone with use/exercise. The powers of the eye are more likely to become nearsighted during the first 25 years of life and then after that, there is a trend to become more farsighted and lose your ability to see up close - this shift in the later years of life occur due to crystalline lens changes inside the eye.

@@DoctorEyeHealth Thank you for the response. Personally as a child I had cross eyes, so glasses were used to help to get the eyes to conform. So I was already on the path before they did 2 corrective surgeries 60 years ago. I ended up with +7.5and +8. My neighbour of a similar age was prescribed glasses decades ago, but went the exercise route, and has never worn glasses since. The concept being as you know you are not affecting the muscles within the eyes, but rather the muscles that affect eye control, which can "squash" the eye to improve the focal length. This may be bogus, but it worked for him. It is part of his daily routine.

I agree with your first sentence. I doubt the sentence as the Doc does below your comment. That said I must state weaker prescriptions have apparently improve my myopia by 3.5 diopters and even helped to some extent with accommodation. Meaning I only need bifocals not trifocals. Further, I hate plastic lenses and wish for the tempered glass lenses on my early adult years & prior. I started as very myopic and still am quite myopic. Great and very informative video :). However i cant agree that glasses does not worsen vision. As I (and a lot of people confirm) once you get into glasses you never get rid of them. I have seen friends developing nearsightendess at their 30's when eye theoretically is developed and should not grow. In addition there are some prominent therapies to improve eyesight like light photonic therapy that can improve eyesight but i dont see optical community interested in it sadly.

If you need glasses to begin with, your eyes will worsen regardless of whether or not you wear them. When I was younger I disregarded my prescription because my vision wasn’t that bad and I felt that I couldn’t be as attractive with glasses. Long story short, my myopia continued to progress over the years. Until I could no longer avoid the inevitable. It’s a myth that glasses damage your vision.

I got myself some 1.0x reading glasses on my mom's entreaties, lowest I could get, and I have to say, I hadn't realized how hazy my near-sight had gotten until I saw how crystal clear it was with the glasses on. It's not that glasses make your eyesight worse; it's that you don't realize how bad it's gotten until you have glasses on. Also, people gazing into the sun to improve their eyesight and all the other untested "alternative" medicine enthusiasts are just over-coddled morons who need to learn and understand the unnecessary pain and stupidity of pre-scientific healthcare. Incredible to say that glasses dont make your eyesight worse, where as you obviously know that overprescription happened and still happens a lot, and overprescription for myopia for example forces the eye to "elongate" more and more thus causing a stronger myopia. I agree that perfectly adjusted glasses wont necesseraly make your eyes worse (it wont make them better neither because you need your eyes to work a little bit) but overprescription (which was a common thing 10 years ago) can absolutely destroy your vision.

couple of questions.. - does wearing glasses with poor optical quality has any impact on eye health? for eg. lens with low ABBE value, or lens without anti-reflective coating. - is it better to wear sunglasses with UV365 protection (not full range UV400) or not wearing any glasses at all and squint my eyes instead.. lets say UV400 lens isnt an option. (I'm asking this because there are CR-39 lens that can be custom tinted, but its more like raw lens with no uv protection coating, and CR-39 materials only offer protection up to UV365)

Hey thanks for the question! There are studies that show if someone is nearsighted and refrains from wearing correction, they tend to advance in their myopia faster (studies on young children). Usually the eyes stop or at least slow in their growth in your early 20s. In most adults, once the eye has stopped growing, not wearing correction for 2-6 hours per day may not increase the eyes power or “make them worse”, but obviously they wouldn’t see as well in the distance without the correction. Hope that helps!

Do you have a video on what happens if you don't treat dry eyes? If oil ducts are crystalized?
@DoctorEyeHealth Жыл бұрын
hmmm, no I don't think so. But that's a good idea! In short, oil ducts can atrophy, Tear film becomes unstable and the corneal surface becomes exposed and starts to become damaged. Risk for corneal ulcers and infection can occur, new membranes can grow on the conjunctiva making it hard to open/blink the eye properly, and then finally scarring of the cornea.

No mention of mono-vision as an alternative to prevent loss of near vision with LASIK or other refractive surgeries (PRK and RK). I was in my mid-40s when I had refractive surgery for myopia in ‘96. I thought it would be a very bad trade off to walk in having perfect near vision and blurry distance vision, only to walk out with the opposite: great distance vision while forfeiting my great near vision for blurry near vision. No thank you! The solution was mono-vision. I left one eye near-sighted. It’s worked brilliantly for me from the start. And I’ve never had depth perception issues that are claimed with mono-vision. I jumped horses and needed to gage how much to lengthen or shorten the stride as I approached a jump. Horses have a 12-foot stride, but I had no issue gaging the jump distances whatsoever. I love my mono vision! It’s worked brilliantly.

Yes I had eye glasses. One for close up views, which for astigmatism, I had and other glasses for long view distancing. Over 20 years, my other long distance glasses fell apart. So I stuck to using the close up close glasses. Soon this exercised my eyes, and thus these glasses worked for both close up view, and long distance. Eventually these plastic glasses too also plastic frames fell apart. So I replaced the frames for $19.99. I bought two frames, just is case. I fell asleep and crushed the gasses when waking up and accidentally stepping on them, and they were damaged. The lenses and the metal parts were okay, so I removed four screws to remove the plastic parts and replaced them with the new $19.99 ones. So over 44 years, it only cost me $19.99 x2.

Yes I do have a question. Similar to one on the video, but reversed: would people with very low levels of astigmatism (e.g. CYL < 1.0) benefit from eye surgery? Some decades ago I remember hearing that eye surgery was in fact not recommended for those with small enough prescriptions (but I never knew how small exactly,) because the eye surgery itself had some "delta" accuracy/error risk. So at least back then, for those with very small prescriptions, the results of laser surgery could end up requiring in fact a slightly higher prescription. One other question: is it really possible to measure astigmatism manually at home, without going to an optometrist/optician? I've seen some methods online rotating small lines drawn in a 90º angle. I can confirm I can easily verify that my Axis is ok for my eye with higher astigmatism (CYL -1.50) but for small astigmatism levels (e.g. CYL -0.25) it seems to me both the Axis, and specially the Cyl value even for the higher CYL eye are incredibly difficutl if not impossible to even get close to or in any reliable enough ballpark, by trying by myself with such diy methods at home.

Unfortunately, we do not have any ways to reverse the cataracts without surgery at this time. However some people do appreciate good eyesight despite cataracts and may never need cataract surgery. Best ways to slow down/prevent cataract formation includes eating healthy (lot's of antioxidants), shielding the eyes from harsh sunlight (sunglasses and hats), and don't smoke/drink.

Somehow I’ve developed astigmatism (probably) where it just looks like everyone is driving with their lights on. It’s almost blinding. It kinda happened out of nowhere a year ago or less. Otherwise my vision doesn’t seem blurry but now I’m starting to wonder. I do live video streams 2x per week and I have a lot of bright lights shining in my face. Is this causing damage to my eyes? Did I cause this astigmatism??? I have a ring light on my face, my monitor brightness turned all the way up, and I lean my living room lamp so that it’s pointing right at my face. I have the TV on, and I also have another lamp shining right at my face. It makes for a really good picture. But I wonder if this is causing actual damage. And if so, I’m not sure what to do. Thing is, sometimes my eyes kinda burn when I’m streaming, but NOW that same burn can kinda be felt after driving at night. The same exact feeling. So now I’m worried..

What about the use of sun glasses, I only wear mine if I am driving into the sunrise or sunset and when I'm in high glare situations. I heard that the sunlight is good for your as long as you don't stare at it which you mentioned.
@summerycast793610 ай бұрын
For me, I use them as the sun can shine so strong it reflects off surfaces such as the pavement. It causes my eyes to squint hard. I can't relax my eyes at all unless I'm staring in the opposite direction of where the sun is shining, which is annoying and not always possible. Sun glasses allow my eye to relax under what would normally be strong glares. That said, I have prescription lenses but no prescription sunglasses until yesterday. Normally I would have to wear my sunglasses on top of my prescription glasses. Mad uncomfortable I tell you, and you look silly. So I opt to bear the eye strain instead of wearing sunglasses. With the prescription lenses in my new pair of sunglasses, now I get to have the best of both worlds! The sun definitely offers healthy benefits, such as Vitamin D. No need to stare at it to receive it. Just exposing yourself to the sun is enough, though wear sunscreen if it is especially hot.

I have a question about reversal of an ICL surgery, or ICL removal. I am 20 years old. I had an ICL surgery 4 months ago, however my pupil is too large and it would dilate over the optical zone in very dark environments, and I don’t like that at all. Furthermore I had -2.5 diopter of astigmatism but the toric lenses has rotated by 12 degrees, and it lead to a -1.5 diopter of residual astigmatism in one eye. Some doctor recommend me to do an ICL rotation procedure. But I am not sure whether it is worth it, because I am also considering remove the lens. I don’t have any complications by far, no dry eye, no elevated pressure, endothelial cell count looks good and so on. Do you think I should try the rotation procedure anyway despite the dissatisfaction of halos.? How risky is the removal procedure and if it was done uneventfully, and could my eye health and best correctable visual acuity go back to the state similar to pre surgery? Thank you!
