Purchasing prescription glasses can be a challenge and often confusing when you do not know all the lens options. I've been wearing glasses since I was a year old. Since I was a kid, I could see that distortion you talked about on the edges of my strong polycarbonate lenses, but the eye doctor just told me that I must be imagining it, because apparently gaslighting children is acceptable. It's there, and it's why I wear contacts as much as possible.

It's not just kids who get gaslighted regarding lenses. After spending lots of money on lenses and specialists, I finally began my journey to find what was best for me. I know what I'm seeing. I don't allow doctors to tell me that I'm not seeing what I see.

Couldn't drive with them. After convincing them that I WAS NOT looking through the progressive part, they then told me that some people could not wear them.

I can't wear polycarbonate either because I see colors feathering off the edges of objects. I stick with CR 39. Best for me.

Where I live there are hundreds of optical stores, I have used eyeglasses for a long time and although I visited almost all of them, none of them honestly clarified the difference between the materials. They just told me that polycarbonate was the best material against scratches (which is why I always chose it) when in reality it is not, in addition to putting more emphasis on trying to sell treatments that are not so important. I always trusted their opinion as professionals but the 80% of them (or they employees) only have the mentality of merchants ... it was not until now that I began to learn more thanks to content like this and decide for myself which product is suitable. Yup I can’t believe I kept listening to them. I got glasses with polycarbonate lenses that were recommended for me, and it made my eyes look small and distorted, even got headaches. That was until I did more researched and ordered high index glasses from Ray-Ban to accommodate my higher prescription and it made such a huge difference. My eyes look less distorted, and I don’t get fatigue anymore. I used to hate wearing glasses for this particular reason, now I actually wear them everyday lol

I enjoyed the way you explained the lens, I sell glasses everyday and know a lot of about theses lens already except trivex lens, we don’t sell those in my store but now I can explain the difference between those and polycarbonate lens better. I also never knew polycarbonate lens have color distortion on the sides I have glasses with poly and hi index lens and the main difference far as seeing is hi index gives a immediate clearer view.

Thanks for such an informative video Dr. Allen! I had wondered what Trivex lenses were. Didn't get glasses until age 42, so went straight to Progressives. What could be better than a lens that has every different section allow you to have perfect vision depending on where you're looking? I understand for people who don't start out with them it takes some getting used to. But since they were the first lenses I wore they were a natural for me. Love photochromatic Transitions lenses, as well! The new XtraActive versions are great for people with light sensitivity. They always have the slightest tint and then change tint readily with the strength of the light they're exposed to. Although I have regular transitions as well. I do have non photochromatic lenses for indoors or night time, especially for night driving. 😎

@@cf116 Most won't darken in the car as the car windows block the UV light that causes them to darken. I have a set of clip-on sunglasses that I use in the car instead. Some are designed to work inside of a car but they don't get fully clear.

Great video Doc. I have a -3.25 and -3.5 with -1 of astigmatism in each eye and I just recently received my new glasses with the 1.69 index. Way lighter and thinnner than the polycarbonate ones I used to have! Feels great on the face. Also ordered a slightly lower perscription ( lower by 0.25 in each eye) for computer with Blue Light blocking. I find that computer usage requires less lens power to see clearly than other activities. I then have to switch back when looking for. But at least I don’t mind!

Dr. Allen, I am really hoping you will make a video about "progressive lens options", especially those that are digitally designed. My recent discussions with a number of opticians were about new digital progressive lenses, supposedly superior (and more costly) than earlier ones. They were described as being "top tier" or "premiere" because they are individually designed for a patient's specific prescription, and have a better range of vision levels than older lenses. What are your thoughts about this new technology? Really hoping to hear your perspective before I purchase :-). Thank you.

Hello, in October I started being through laser sessions due to retinal tears. Soon after I began seeing these bright spots (which later I found out to fit perfectly with the blue field entoptic phenomenon); not to mention an increase in floaters. Any thoughts on what could have caused it? Thanks for the informative content :)

Hey Danilo. Thanks for sharing that. Tough to say why you are seeing the blue field entoptic phenomenon after all that. But very interesting because I see it too. (really want to do a video on that). Floaters are more common after any eye surgery, particularly a retinal surgery. But changes to the vitreous gel and growth of floaters do often cause retinal tears as well.

I have a question just changed from rectangular lenses to oval and with first time blue light and already have had them for almost two weeks and on the side of the lenses I see blurry and in the front I see perfectly fine. What do you think it might be?

It could be a “base curve” issue. Sometimes going from rectangular frame into that oval can add more curvature to the material. This is something that can be fixed, if your optical shop has control over their lenses (most do). A blue light filter (or most other coatings) have very little effect on your overall quality of vision. Finally if the base material of your lens has changed it could also be that you aren’t adapting. I’ve worked in optical for 2 1/2 years in a specialists office. The only real answer to your question is to talk to your DOCTOR or OPTICIAN. They will be able to give you an actual answer. The things I suggested above are only the cases I typically see.

@@MiteshDamania your issue could also be material based, or even rx based. Your rx is a little on the high side. Sometimes high myopes don’t like Cyl changes. You’ll definitely have to talk to your doctor and optician, they’ll be able to show you what changes you had since your last visit/purchase.

So much great information in this video. 😊 7:53 Something to be aware of with high index lenses is that, the higher the index the lower the Abbe value, which means you're going to see more chromatic aberration (colour fringing) around the edges of the lenses. Some high index lenses have an Abbe value as low as 31, which isn't great for the clarity of the lens.

I thought something was wrong with my prescription, just turns out they are so high that I get these strong color shifts even in the middle of my vision if the lights are bright enough. Extremely noticeable on my color cycling RGB RAM sticks in my pc, the reds shift physically shift position and make it look like its moving.

@@Nccp9 Unless you have very strong prescriptions and want as thin lenses as possible, go with CR-39 next time. CR-39 has an Abbe number of 59, higher than the eye, so no colour fringing and also a lot cheaper than high index lenses.

@@Nccp9 no you arent! you can get trivex which is a direct competitor of polycarbonate but offers higher abbe numbers and the most clarity while also having the impact resistance of poly! I have astig. and -6, -7 on my eyes so I also have a strong perscription but you are not limited on your options!

Really helpful. I have massive chromatic aberration with poly lenses (I have transition and progressives). Lenscrafter gave me poly lenses and I didn't know better until I tried them, and I returned them. My old glasses have Zeiss CR-39 and I had zero issues. I may go back to LC and ask for CR-39 since they have a nice frame I like.

I told them about the chromatic aberrations and they kept trying different poly lenses .. obviously didn't work, and I didn't know any better at the time. You'd think *they* would know 😕 Anyway, the information in your videos has been very interesting and helpful - thanks again.

I've worn glasses and contacts all my life. I've found as an adult, letting the provider be in charge of everything is just not an option anymore. I had one provider just out of school, really push me for monovision contacts. Seeing one distance in one eye, and one in another. I told her no, that drives me absolutely crazy, but she continued to push it, telling me how much I would love it. But I refused. When I get my contacts? Guess what the prescription was. I was furious to have wasted my money on something that I ended up going to another doctor and starting all over again to get what I needed. You have to find someone you can trust, who you can respect, and who respects you and your needs and will listen. I've found an awesome provider recently, and will never change. Check the reviews, due your due diligence, and get educated. And find that respect factor. It makes a huge difference.

I have always used glass lenses; they are readily available at either vision center in my town. Comes at a premium cost, but they last forever. I have relatively stable vision, and the pair that I just moved off from was ten years old. The lenses and titanium frame are still in perfect condition. Now in a bifocal with photochromic glass.

Acetate plastic frame to cover edge of high myopia, 1.67 MC with Transitions but here’s my twist, single vision freeform lens to increase my field of view in the lens to stop the extra astigmatism in the corners of the lenses hehe

I have an Rx of -9.50 / -11.50 and usually have to get 1.74 hight index lenses. Is there any other lens that is thinner than that? Also to make it more complicated due to age (54) I also have presbyopia (+2.50) for reading. Any recommendations? I was told that I have to have progressive lenses and can not use a bifocal lenses. I specialise in glasses from the UK and being in optics for the past 12 years this is what I speak to my patient's on a day to day basis. Very useful video for those new to glasses. My favourite lenses are zeiss or rodenstock. Not a presbyopic just yet!

You mentioned that poly carbonate is soft and easy to scratch, but you did not speak of the hardness or scratch-ability of high index or Trivex. at this point scratch resistance is my biggest concern. If the lens is too soft, I believe that compromises any scratch resistant coating as well.

Firstly, thank you! Great video. :) I have a concern/question. I just ordered eyeglasses from the local shop and I thought I was getting varilux x series. I'm looking at my receipt and I'm worried bc I see that I have the physio w3+. Are these still going to be good? I don't have a very high prescription, but I'm just sad that the quality of these won't be very good.

Hi Dr, can you please also elaborate on blue filter coating ? Also digital lens that comes with low addition that claimed can give some sort of ‘relax’ to the eyes ? Thanks for the great info anyway ☺️

Blue light filters improve contrast since the human eye doesn't do too well with blue light. The low addition lens he mentioned is useful for using you smartphone or reading, since you eyes don't need to adjust to the close distance (think of the lens on a camera)

Hey I have a question does myopia effect the perception of distance? I mean even if I were to wear glasses, does my brain have a poorer perception of distances in general? Or is that mechanism independent to myopia?

At my Dioptors...-3.75/-4.50.......i always go for 1.74 index lenses as the look amazing in eyeglass frames. Currently sporting Tom Ford specs with Essilor Varilux X lenses 1.74, and Essilor Sapphire coating. I like a streamlined profile so thick specs are a no go!

That's some good stuff, might get away with 1,67 Index but at that point doesn't make the biggest difference in price.

I have a question. I have astigmatism and require glasses all day long. Since I'm a student I would be spending a lot of time on my phone and computer and I have notes I have began to squint when I try to read. Is it possible to combine both astigmatism and computer lenses. Is it practical?

I’m diabetic. Sometimes in the mornings or at night my visón is great without my eyeglasses on. Would you recommend having an eye exam twice,once during a great vision day & one on a bad day? I’ve had lenses years ago on a good day and on a bad day,they were almost useless or were. Ugh. Danke

Good video. As an old lab techie, I must correct you about stinky Trivex. It is 1.60, 1.67, and 1.76 indexes that stink when you cut them :-)

I like CR-39, great quality, high Abbe value! I bought a plastic frame and they were sliding off my nose, lucky for me Amazon sells silicone nose pads and they worked, but next time I'll just get the metal frames.

Hi, would high index lenses mitigate the minification of my glasses? I’ve only ever used polycarbonate lenses and noticed that my eyes get slightly smaller when I’m wearing my glasses. My OD sphere is -2.75 Cyl -3.75, OS Sphere -2.75 Cyl -4.25.

Interesting, but as far as materials you left one out. You can tell me about plastic, but with 50 years of trying all the different lenses, I still like glass. With my high Rx, I do end up with thick and heavy lenses. I also like large lenses that help with my side vison, so the edges have got real thick. I still like the quality and durability of real glass. Takes longer, but it is worth it.
