In Vietnam, we are taught (yes, they teach this stuff at school) that raw cow milk is safe for direct consumption within a few hours of milking cows, because of natural antibacteria stuff (enzymes if I'm not mistaken) in the milk. In this phase, yes, raw milk is better (more good stuff - nutrition, beneficial enzymes...). But if you live far away from a farm, then by the time raw milk reaches consumers like you, it is most likely just a concoction of bacteria and viruses. You should only consume processed milk (yes, pasteurization aka heating up milk is a form of food processing, same as you boiling eggs) because it's safer, and accept that it might not be as good as fresh raw milk. In a way, it's just a simple risk-reward assessment.

@skyeiron58725 сағат бұрын
That's BS. You can absolutely avoid getting sh*t in the milk by 3 simple steps. 1. _Wash the udder._ 2. Hand milk into a small jug. 3. Empty the small jug into a larger jug or bucket when it is full . Repeat steps 2 & 3 until you have the amount you want. Alternatively; 2. Put cups on. 3. Remove the cups when the cow is done. Of course this is specific to small farms. Any large scale milking operation doesn't have the time to wash the udder of every cow or ensure that no cow kicks the cups off into sh*t.

Farm boy here. I've always preferred raw milk. It's sweeter and creamier than store bought milk. Working on a dairy farm provided free daily access to fresh milk. I would have to add that raw milk is saturated with fats, which are not exactly healthy. But, I've known many dairy farmers that drank fresh milk. And most of them lived long lives with little health issues, none of which were attributed to milk borne diseases or viruses. They may have had high cholesterol and even heart issues, but these farmers also ate a lot of high fat meals. Country cooking involves fats, both from dairy and dairy products, and from meats. Fresh milk must be stirred nearly constantly to prevent the fats from separating, floating to the top, and congealing into butter. This is why milk is both stripped of most of the fat and the rest is homogenized. I once heard that the daily recommended allowance of milk was the same as eating 8 pieces of bacon. Yum! I credit their long lives to how hard farmers worked. Like lumberjacks back in the 19th century, they ate high amounts of calories and burned them off cutting down trees. I heard that they ate close to 8000 calories a day and never gained a pound! Fresh milk contains active bacteria that will multiply rapidly, even while refrigerated. It doesn't keep very long without pasteurization, and the fat content is too high to homogenize all the fat. If you're going to drink raw milk, be sure you get it from a dairy producer and not some person with a couple of cows on a dark alley. The USDA inspects dairy farms for compliance on cleanliness and sterilization of equipment, the health of the cows, and quality of the milk. Cows do get sick and the milk can get contaminated. Milk fever makes the milk yellow, stinky, and lumpy. You don't want that stuff, for sure. I get a kick out of these "milks" from grass, nuts, and grains. I still can't imagine milking a blade of grass or seeing an almond suckle on another! What's next, chicken milk? White meat making whiter milk? 😂

The big deal is legalities and marketing. The big deal breakers are salmonella and gastroenteritis. The benefit of shelf life. The benefit of not playing roulette with a pathogen. Raw milk is great. I've drunken it and been fine. I've also had it and been so violently ill I wished I would die instead of having to regurgitate nothing for the next 6 hours after having done the same for the previous 6. Pasteurised and homogenised is a good idea. It's not done because it is unnecessary. What you will find with cheeses made with said unpasteurised milks is that the cheeses themselves get Pasteurised or treated in some way to prevent said illnesses, and the use of them is to achieve particular subtleties in the cheeses that are made from it.
@LoFiAxolotl6 сағат бұрын

I can't say anything about cheese (don't like it, don't care - yes, I got told it's very shocking) But as someone from Europe, who grew up with many farms/ old farmers around, I'd say that I'd NEVER buy raw milk from a grocery store... When you are at a farm with healthy cows and you milk them, and drink the milk, yeah fine But with the gigantic milk industry, parts with not 100% healthy cows and then the transport and storage of raw milk?!?! It's not made for smth like that o_O
@ryanfox56125 сағат бұрын
If cheese is made properly and carefully then it doesn't need pasteurization because the fermentation process of the good bacterial cultures happens so quickly that harmful ones like e.coli can't take hold and all of the sugars that they would eat are consumed.

If you're worried about that aspect literally just eat a good yogurt or make some yourself at home.

I want to add a thought about the farm study. My grandfather lived in an agricultural community, and was a farmer until he got too old for the job. For as long as I remember he got raw milk from his neighbors. But he never drank it raw, he pasteurized it himself, maybe not with all the chemicals, but I remember the huge pot of milk foaming away on the stove. So yeah, maybe they add too many chemicals to milk, I don't know, not my field of study, but if you don't trust corporations, buy raw milk and pasteurize it yourselves, it can literally just be, boiling a pot of freaking milk.
@Deladus5 сағат бұрын
There are no chemicals added to milk as part of the pasteurization process and most milk doesn't have added chemicals. Its literally just heating and cooling. I just looked at Walmarts selection of milk online and the only ingredients in each (cow milk, unflavored) were: Milk Added Vitamins Lactase enzyme in the lactose free ones. Unless you are afraid of extra vitamins, regular milk is safe. Lactose free if you aren't afraid of the enzyme and there is no way around that with raw milk. Nut milks are different, but that discussion is different from the raw milk discussion since pasteurized milk doesn't have it.
@matthewluttrell94135 сағат бұрын
To be very clear, the pasteurization process uses zero added chemicals. At a small scale, a container with milk is heated up to the specific temperature for a certain amount of time, and that's it. So exactly like using a pot on a stove top. At a larger industrial level (and to keep the explanation simple) the milk is pumped through heated plumbing to assure it reaches the desired temperature and time. That's it👍🏻

I'm romanian. Every summer break since I was 6 was at my grandparents. Every evening, we would stay in barn door to get an iron cup of fresh milk from one of my grandparents . But not always, in some days the rule was "we first make mamaliga (polenta) and boil the milk in what remains stuck(burned) on the walls of the pot used to make mamaliga. Funny thing, my grandparents were against sugar but always ad a pinch of salt to raw milk.

As an Eastern European Village boy. I been drinking Raw milk before it was cool ;) And we grew up to be big and strong (and kind :P). I know personal experience is not much, but I always enjoyed raw milk (milked 5 minutes ago - still warm) and I will keep enjoying it, but I understand the risks associated.

I mean, Dr. Mike literally said that the issue with raw milk comes from transporting it long distances an producing it in urban production centers. Families on small farms milking their cows and drinking that milk are different.
@Red-in1xe6 сағат бұрын
It's also generally safer to drink it immediately, rather than once it's been packaged and sitting on a shelf for who knows how long. Not that it's safe, but safer.
@1990lietuva6 сағат бұрын
@ Fair point, but there are a bunch of other issues. I believe some tick born illnesses can be transferred from cow to human, and even some other lesser known diseases :( At least what I heard, but I am not a doctor, just semi-educated individual on the topic. But of course I am not drinking it because of benefits, I am drinking it because it's so yummy, seriously guys that have not drank milk that is basically straight from the cow are really missing out. Of course talking about Summer milk. It tastes wildly different on pasture used and season (mostly because feed is different). But that's all, I understand it's not a great idea, but again to clarify, I never cared about the benefits, it's purely because of taste.

I appreciate your honest opinion, and I agree with the statement that industrialization caused a huge influx in sickness because of it. This isn't because of raw milk itself but because farmers weren't taking the time to thoroughly clean the machines, udders, pens, hands, etc. I use the share system and the farm we get it from does filter it to get out any impurities like dirt, and if there is any, what we'll call mud👀, found in it by the machines that they use they will refrain from giving people their shares. Its only happened twice out of the 4 years that we've been using them. Thank you for the good quality content!

I eventually started drinking it again I had a really hard time digesting milk and it would upset my stomach. I then tried raw milk, and had zero issues or discomfort. I then tried ultrafiltered (Fairlife) and also had zero issues. But I still have problems whenever I drink regular 2%, 1%, etc. Not sure what the root of the issue is, but something is definitely different between regular, raw, and ultrafiltered milks.

I'm from Argentina and as far as I know, even family farms don't just consume raw milk, they always boil it first. I always heard about how much "better" so I went to a farm and bought some, I really didn't like it, it was completely different from regular storebought milk. Even the smell I hated, so I really don't understand how these people can just swich up one an another, it's totally different. Appart from that, it's also known farm milk isn't wattered down, so the concentration of fat is quite different and that is usually a cause to why people get stomach aches from drinking it as regular milk. Imagine you have 1, 2 and 3% fat milks and they all taste quite different, then raw milk can go from 3,5% up to 5% so it will be quite "heavier" on the stomach. Also I believe how they measure studies has to be informed more openly because nowadays everyone can just "cheat" in how they take the data and not take into account several points, for example, raw milk cause diseases take into account if the milk was boiled before? what about refrigeration? what about the sanitary conditions on how people who drink raw milk live against the average? Another example on this measleading studies is one that was published recently about "red meat and how it's healthier to not consume it", then if you look at it, the "red meat" used was hotdogs and things of that kind, totally misleading.

no such thing as low temp pasteurized milk. Pasteurizing something is a very specific procedure done at a very specific temperature for a very specific time. You might just be too stupid though.
@WolvenSpectre5 сағат бұрын
Dude you are drinking warm Raw Milk. YOU CANNOT LOWER THE TEMPERATURE OF PASTURIZATION. That is like saying you are taking a weaker antibiotic so it doesn't wreck your gut biome. Then it won't work for whatever reason you were taking it in the first place. My mother used to buy "Farm Cream" but the people who sold it to us showed me how they sold it in canning jars and put it in jars that were boiled to sterilize the jar and they then added the cream and sealed it. They took me aside and said that the heat in the jars raised the milk past pasteurization and then when they cooled down they stuck them in a fridge. They pointed out that the quality of the cream came from the amount of buttermilk used vs what she got in store. Later, not from me, my mother found out they were pasteurizing the cream and thought they had just started and it "wasn't the same" when it was exactly the same. We got into a big argument that "That wasn't Pasteurization" and I realized I wasn't going to win because she thought she was buying "Farm Fresh" cream like she had as a girl and she felt ripped off the farmer gave a damn about the people he sold his cream and milk to. The quality difference you are tasteing in the milk is because it isn't large vat highly processed. It has nothing to do with Pasteurization.

I think that commercial companies should pasteurize their milk. Given the scale of at which they sale milk it’s much healthier for the consumer. However I personally own a farm and have dairy goats. We definitely pasteurize milk we use for cheese but for our dinking milk we love it raw. We also have a rigorous process to ensure it is very clean and free from bacteria. From cleaning the udders to multi stage filters to flash chilling. I by no means think everyone should drink raw milk but I personally love it. Awesome videos Dr. Mike love your content

Messaging that the pasturing process is not adding mysterious chemical tinkering but just heating it up for a short time may alleviate the mistrust.

Part of me wonders if the reason the debate even started is that schools will teach the “what,” in this case that ‘pasteurization kills germs,’ but not the “how and why.” So in a world where we are told to question everything, they question it because they were never given an answer in an environment where they could do the learning easily, be it lectures explaining how heat can easily kill single-cell organisms or with a science experiment of showing a sample of water with bacteria, heating the sample up hot enough to kill it, the showing the sample to the class under a microscope with the bacteria dead
