Slavery would be obsolete due to two factors. One, farming was being automated in the late 1870s. Two, Britain the largest textile manufacturer in the world successfully cultivate cotton in Egypt that was as soft and white as southern cotton at lower cost. Movie is presented as a civil war documentary show on a local TV station in a world where the confederacy had won the civil war. this is a fairly tame commercial but there are others throughout the movie based on real advertising and products. some still in use today.

It was given the name of Convict Leasing, a type of enforced slavery that continued on for many years after the end of the civil war.
