My grandad was 24 when Doctor Who first started broadcasting in 1963. He used to watch it with my dad when he was growing up in the 1970s-1980s. When this episode first broadcast in 2013, I was staying the night at my grandparents house, and we watched it on TV. By that point, he hadn't watched an episode of Doctor Who in years, and this episode was the first he'd seen of the revival series. He approved of Matt Smith's casting as a younger, quirky and funny version of the Doctor, as well as the self-aware humour that came with enjoying hearing "Doctor Who?" be asked out loud. It genuinely made him laugh. My grandad is gone now, but I'll forever cherish the memory of watching this episode with him and my grandmother at their house, and exposing him to the new series and Matt Smith's doctor.

I will say this again, Matt Smith is by far my favorite doctor. He is just such an underrated actor. The key to playing the doctor is to have range, by range I mean to be able to portray a wide variety of emotions, from sad, to angry, and from happy to sad. Imo he also has a better chemistry with Clara than 11 did, or rather a different kind of energy. With 11 it was more of a role model type of character but with Matt it they were a little more equal. Maybe the fact that actors were the same throws me off. I really enjoyed the flirty kind of relationship where they both push and pull

Unanswered mysteries in this scene: 1: Who gave Clara the Doctor's number? (Until we get an answer I'm guessing Sally Sparrow from Blink, given she's a "woman in a shop" we know. Knowing Moffat, though, the real answer could either be infinitely better or infinitely more contrived and convoluted.) 2: How does the TARDIS' exterior phone even receive calls in the first place? As we saw back in The Empty Child, that phone is a fake and isn't even connected to anything. Maybe that changed when the TARDIS changed designs in 2010 or 2013, but maybe not only is Clara calling the TARDIS across time via a number from a mysterious shopkeeper but is also calling a phone that by all means should not work. 3: Why did the call reach the Doctor only at that point in time? Considering the call goes across centuries it could easily have reached the Doctor at any other point in his life. Why right then? I'm assuming we won't ever get a canonical answer for this one because the obvious answer is "because otherwise the Doctor wouldn't meet Clara," but I'd like to think there's a little more to it than simple writing convenience. Anyway I'm really glad we get Clara for at least another series and I'm sort of glad Moffat's sticking around to clean up his own mess because there's still a ton of questions that need answering.
@AndyG9411 жыл бұрын
1.-I always thought that the woman who gave her the number was either Sarah Jane or River Song... 2.- Maybe the Doctor fixed it when he changed the 'desktop theme'? 3.-Maybe because he stopped moving across space and time and kind of 'settled' so the call eventually found him. 4.- I'm not over the feels of Christmas just yet TT-TT

Three. Maybe he changes his number everytime he regenerates so that way it wont create any Time-lime paradox. 1. Maybe its a another clara.
@HotHubHD11 жыл бұрын
2. In Time of the doctor, handles the cyberman head indicates that he can rewire the phone to the exterior, or to the console. Lets not forget, that the doctor can fix the chameleon circuit but chooses not too. Something as simple as a phone shouldnt be hard. Also the doctor has a qualification in JiggeryPockery, so phones are like legos to him.

1: There are multiple suspects with blonde hair that could have handed the number to Clara. His daughter Jenny, River, Kate Stewart, even at a push sally Sparrow, but goodness knows how she would get the number in the first place. 2: Ah, did you notice that it was an entirely diffrent phone in the box? The phone in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances was an early stick phone, whereas this model was a much later one with a much more usefull extendable cord. 3: The TARDIS exists in all of space and time and routes calls to the where and when. Remember when River, who was in the Stormcage, got a call from Winston Churchill, even though he called the Doctor's number? The TARDIS routed the phone call to River. The TARDIS knew that the Doctor was looking for Clara and how important she would be in his life. Well, that's what I think. : )
@799stargirl11 жыл бұрын
so maybe the TARDIS (as a lady) might have given the phone number to clara? or maybe all that wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff there was some point in time that IT WAS MEANT that his number was given to her by an old friend or companion of the doctor by the TARDIS? just saying :p

I have no problem with daleks, cybermen, time lords, weeping angels, tardis, Scottish werewolves, Italian vampires, Shakespearian witches, Dickensian ghosts, murder-mystery alien wasps and disappearing-mystery alien bees. Wasp and bees mysteries having no connection but still occurring in a single series. But the idea a British 24 year old student studying to be an English teacher in 2013, wouldn’t know how to work a computer gives new meaning to the phrase “impossible girl” Did moffat forget that this was a different Clara than the one from the previous episode set in 1892.

They had such a natural chemistry. I took Capaldi a season to develop that kind of chemistry
@tomnorton42772 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Peter Capaldi's overrated as both the Doctor and an actor. Clara carried Season 8 for him because he couldn't do it himself, even though the writing was designed to make them equals. Matt Smith could have carried Season 8 with or without Clara and John Hurt wouldn't have been overshadowed but Peter Capaldi relied very heavily on her, both within the context of the story and when he was performing. Jenna Coleman's 28 years younger than him and she managed to make Capaldi look like a mediocre actor in comparison. There's a reason people call Season 8 Clara Who but it's not the reason everybody claims, which is that Season 8 focussed too much on Clara and not enough on the Doctor. It actually focussed on both of them and gave them approximately equal amounts of depth and development but became Clara Who because Jenna Coleman simply has more talent than Peter Capaldi does.

@@SteelSpurs I've seen replies similar to yours plenty of times. Peter Capaldi's got a rabid fanbase so talking to people like you is nothing new. I've been doing it for years and only 1 has given me a compelling argument. If you're going to argue, at least say something original.

Yeah, it's called an arc.
@tomnorton427711 ай бұрын
@@RoyalMudcrab If Peter Capaldi was playing the Valeyard's redemption arc, his sociopathic performance would have worked. But he wasn't. He ruined what should have been the Doctor's best arc since Series 1. Christopher Ecclestone had the right sense of balance between a grumpy, distant alien and a funny, caring man. Peter Capaldi just came across as a human trying to pretend that he's an alien to excuse his shitty behaviour. Plus, Peter Capaldi's "humour" sucked ass. Just imagine him saying "Nope. Bonehead. Bye then." There would have been no charm or charisma behind those words. Coming from Chris Ecclestone, the line was actually funny.
