I think Moffat gets a lot of undeserved grief. Or I hear a lot of comments along the lines of "12 was a great doctor marred by bad writing..." which again, I think is undeserved. Of course, Moffat had his hits and misses, but his hits were SO BIG, that his misses subsequently looked equally big by comparison. But ultimately, Moffat and his team made NuWho a vibrant, relevant, dramatic, and most of all, fun Who for a new generation that will last into the next generation.

I agree. The Moffat era doesn't get enough credit for TRYING things. Yes not all of it worked ("Kill the Moon", "Forest of the Night") but when they get it right good God it's good. The universe also feels bigger and fuller for his run. RTD and Chibnall, on the hand, played it so safe. Yes RTD created some new aliens and monsters but so many of his episodes were set on modern day Earth. It was like it was ashamed to be a sci fi series at times. Chibnall seems to be going down the same route, albeit he doesn't seem to fear making big decisions.

This will most likely be just me thinking this, but personally, I found the Capaldi Era my favourite period of Modern Doctor Who. Series 8 was a solid start, but both Series 9 and 10 are my fav seasons to date and Capaldi is my favourite Doctor alongside Tom Baker. For me, I will treasure this period of the show for many years to come. My favourite Capldi episodes are: Heaven Sent, The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar, World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls and Twice Upon a Time.

To me, Series 8 and Series 9 are in my Top 3 (with Series 6 going into the no. 2 spot). If I disregard _Hell Bent_ , then Series 9 would be #1 and Series 8 would be right below that ....but alas, _Hell Bent_ is officially Canon, so there we are. Series 10 had a few too many weak Episodes -- _The Empress of Mars_ and _The Eaters of Light_ were "above average" (for _Doctor Who_ standards, that is, which means "really good" for TV overall) to me; while _The Lie of the Land_ I found to be actually rather terrible -- for it to appear any higher on my list than 6th place. But still, overall, the Capaldi Era was my favourite of the modern incarnation of the show. Although, admittedly, this might be slightly more due to Clara and less due to Twelve himself, as the fact that Clara is my favourite Companion is a big reason that elevates Series 8 and 9 above the rest. Capaldi is another big reason, don't get me wrong, but it would have been far closer between Twelve and Eleven if Clara hadn't been Twelve's Companion for 2 of his 3 Seasons.

Interesting the way he explains the Doctor's personality and morality. I guess I've never thought about it that way but it's spot on
@charlesmento59683 жыл бұрын
You never thought about it because it's bollocks. Moffat does not know the Doctor's personality and morality at all. He's the worst thing to ever happen to DW. He really didn't know what he was doing. EVERYTHING he says is nonsense and he readily admits that in his DWM column, that in a week, he changes his mind and says contradictions to what he said a week or a month ago. He's the worst. I loathe his seasons except for season 10. I even loathe his voice.

Has Moffatt made mistakes? Yes. But I'd still like to thank him. I started watching season 5 when I was 8, and I have not stopped since. I'm a big science nerd and genuinely own bowties. I really love Moffat's influence on the program. I think he allowed himself the absolute moment a writer can allow themselves, and that's to genuinely set free your imagination. Some of his stories are as flibbetryjibbit as free verse poetry. Some of his adventures dark and treacly as Shakespeare. Sometimes boundaries are useful, I think he worked brilliantly within those boundaries, then sometimes he tore those boundaries down. I like risk takers, they're able to reach parts none riskiest can't reach. For all his critics and critique is fine, I truly believe history, televisual and otherwise, will fill favour his magnificently complex, sumptuous, comedic, exiting, breathtakingly romantic era, with brio and awe. Moffat gets a lot of flack nowadays but I'm going to say it: he is the best modern Doctor Who writer and it isn't even close. Think of all the episodes of his that are 9/10 or 10/10. Heaven Sent, World Enough And Time, The Pandorica Opens, Blink, The Girl In The Fireplace, Dark Water, The Eleventh Hour, Day Of The Doctor, Night Of The Doctor, A Christmas Carol, Deep Breath, Husbands Of River Song, The Time Of Angels/Flesh And Stone, The Angels Take Manhattan ... and that's just my own personal favourites. A lot of people would include episodes I wouldn't, like Listen, Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, A Good Man Goes To War, The Impossible Astronaut/Day Of The Moon, The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar, Name Of The Doctor, Time Of The Doctor ... etc. If anything, I'd say there are only a couple of episodes that are UNLIKELY to end up on anyone's list of favourites. His hit rate for high quality Doctor Who episodes has to be over 90%.

You forgot to mention "The Zygon's Inversion"; that war speech was incredible
@Wannabe_Baby6 жыл бұрын
Even though he did have a co-writing credit on The Zygon Inversion, I didn't include it because I'm fairly sure the main writer was Peter Harness (and the Writer's Guild started introducing new rules around that time that significant rewrites also required a writing credit, which is why I think Moffat got credited).

Oswin Pond - If he did, then great. He wrote the only part of the episode I really enjoyed. :) I thought the rest of that two-parter was ... plodding. Awesome to finally get this ...I thought we would never see it !! The Twelfth Doctor definitely took time for me to warm up to (especially since he succeeded my favorite Doctor in Matt Smith’s Eleventh) but as he went along , I I liked him more aswell as I thought his series got better and better . Capaldi ‘s Doctor is also the only one of the Modern Doctors I feel to have a more apparent character arc ,he’s definitely not the same man he was at the end that he was at the beginning . I always had a theory that since Twelve was the first incarnation of a new regeneration cycle that it was the reason why the Doctor had to discover himself all over again ,I wish that was the stated reason.

3 years on, Moffat is still unduly hated for his tenure on Doctor Who, and considering all the crap that Chibnal has pulled, I'm really shocked how people think Moffat was a bad writer... just look at his repertoire and the amount of great 7/10-10/10 episodes he's written. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, The Eleventh Hour, The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone, The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang, The Christmas Carol, The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon, A Good Man Goes to War, Asylum of the Daleks, Night of the Doctor, The Day of the Doctor, Time of the Doctor, Deep Breath, Listen, Dark Water/Death in Heaven, Last Christmas, The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar, Heaven Sent, The Husbands of River Song, Extremis, World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls, Twice Upon A Time! Sure there have been some misses, and they have missed hard (Let's Kill Hitler, The Wedding of River Song, The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe, The Angels Take Manhattan, The Snowmen, Name of the Doctor, Hell Bent, The Return of Doctor Mysterio, The Pilot), but even these have memorable moments. And if we count the episodes he's co-written there's a lot of hits and just one miss. (Into the Dalek, Time Heist, and the Zygon Inversion being the hits, and The Lie of the Land being the miss). Hell, he was revolutionising Doctor Who even before getting the job, with a brilliant 20 minute episode with Riwan Etkinson (The Curse of the Fatal Death). This is the man who made Doctor Who the popular show it is today, the man who gave such life to the show with witty dialogue and mindblowing plots which may not always pay off, but he was bold.
@wowaddict1783 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. According to IMDB, Moffat has an average episode rating of 85.09% over his 53 episodes and minisodes (including "The Curse of Fatal Death"). Comparatively, Russell T. Davies averages 80.61% for his 31 episodes and (currently) Chris Chibnall averages 62.55% for his 20 episodes. So I don't understand why he gets so much flack, considering I find his outings more experimental than the other two showrunners.

Weird, most of those episodes you listed as misses I see as great. Let's Kill Hitler, Angels Take Manhattan, The Snowmen, Name of the Doctor, Hell Bent, Return of Doctor Mysterio, The Pilot, most of those are great episodes and some I have literally no clue what problems someone could possible have with them. Is this the final fan show? :((( Also I like how he lets people decide their headcanon, it's so nice that he's aware of people's reactions to the show.

I enjoyed this interview and Steven always brings some interesting points to the table. From the choice of a Doctor in terms of a familiar surprise to Mrs. Who and the Doctor's past to many more things (don't worry, I won't spoil the fun) ;D

A madman with a Scarf Doctor Who Confidential was cancelled! The Fan Show (which this interview was part of) was also cancelled I believe. Maybe we'll get a new behind the scenes show for series 11.

Ontos they'd have to actively try to make it be that, which btw they obviously don't want to do. I think no matter what worst case scenario is it'll just be a solid series, best case scenario is it'll be fantastic and exactly what Doctor Who needs right now (which I'm sure it will be)

If there's one thing Doctor Who taught us, is that time really is relative. I guess this part of the interview fell into a temporal breach of some sort. I'm happy to see that it made it throught. I wonder about all the adventures that it lived while trapped inside this alternative timezone. Make it an audio book, please !

"Borusa activated the Time Scoop. It would be part of his personal Doctor Who collection, just like the 97 missing episodes and the prototypes for unmade Doctor Who action figures. It'd be his and his alone. But then, suddenly, an alarm flared. "No no NO!" he yelled in alarm. The third part of the Moffat interview was trapped in a Time Eddy, he'd never get it now, and it'd take months of painstaking effort for the BBC to retrieve it. All his work had been for nothing."

So Shona was indeed supposed to be the new companion! That always felt like something they set up to happen, but it never did. They even set up a little cliffhanger for her character. Pity, I really liked the actress and I think she would have done a great job (though I guess it's also a good thing she never became a companion, since I really liked Bill and Nardole as well).

Moffat is right, I’m excited for Jodie and a lot of people are to, but I wouldn’t know so in 2005-2010 it is a huge risk. Now Jodie is going to knock it out of the park. She’s gorgeous and looks fun and is alien like especially with the clothes. Can’t wait for Jodie. Perfect replacement for peter. But I’ll always love and miss peter.
