In today's video, Anthony takes us through how the Word of Wisdom developed from divine counsel, to word of commandment. As well as some of the questions many people in and out of the Church have about this principle.

A friend married a man who was not a member of the church and loved coffee. During his meetings with the missionaries over the years about the Word of Wisdom, his biggest hang-up was the hypocrisy of the members who condemned coffee drinking but had no problem with eating "chocolate," both of which contain caffeine. He went round and round about that until finally a sister missionary said, "the Word of Wisdom is about obedience. That's it. Obedience." He immediately gave up his coffee and was baptized shortly thereafter.

Nonsense. Diet Coke will kill you much faster than coffee because of all the synthetic chemicals. Some with energy drinks. You'd think that "prophets, seers, and revelators" would be aware of this.

Well, you have done it again. Fabulous lesson ! I was born and raise in the south drinking tea many times a day. I joined the church at the age of 23 one year after graduating from the University of North Carolina with a degree in chemistry. When the missionaries taught me with their famous flip charts about the word of wisdom and told me it was because of caffeine and tannic acid… I knew that probably was not the case… BUT…. I knew the principle was true and have obeyed since that very day. I also reasoned it to be like a “marker” of obedience, like a “marker” of blood on the door. It is a beautiful principle you have expounded upon. Thank you and Thank you again for your time in my behalf

Wow! I'll never teach or speak of the Word of Wisdom the same way. As I was listening to Brother Sweat this quote from Elder Packer came to my mind: "True doctrine, understood, changes attitudes and behavior." I've always "lived" the Word of Wisdom, but now I understand it! Thank you Brother Sweat! Keep on, keepin' on!

This has given me a more complete view of the 89th section. I have often said that perhaps it was given to test our obedience and willingness to be "peculiar"- now there is greater confidence in that, as well as a better grasp of the holiness component. Thank you.

Thank you for these further insights into this important aspect of our religion. I love your description that abstaining from certain things that are common in our society marks us as peculiar people, set apart from the world, and shows our obedience and dedication to God above all else. One thing I have pondered...couldn’t the “physical” blessings also be “spiritual” blessings as well? Health, marrow, running, walking...surely there must be metaphorical/spiritual meaning to those blessings that we are meant to seek out and discover as well.

Actually, on Oct 13th, 1882 the Lord Revealed to John Taylor that at that point in time the Word of Wisdom was to be considered a commandment. That was about 50 years after the original revelation. And then by 1919 Heber J Grant made it a requirement for temple recommends as you mention. But I like what you have to say.

Exactly I was eating tiramisu in a restaurant one day and a sister said this contains alcohol call the waiter I said no call him after I have finished mine. The waiter confirmed that it did contain alcohol. I had no regrets I keep the commandment section 89.

The main phenolic compound in coffee, chlorogenic acid, is a potent inhibitor of nonheme iron absorption. Hurrell et al3 report that the polyphenolic content typical in a cup of instant coffee reduces iron absorption from a test meal by 60% to 90%. Myself for example who has celiac disease; we’re I to not follow a gluten free diet; and to be struggling with anemia requiring iron infusions, drinking coffee on a regular basis would impact the already difficult issue. I thought that was interesting information regarding prohibiting the absorption of Iron. Does this effect every coffee drinker, maybe, maybe not, but for my situation and body, and also having a thyroid disease, I need to pay attention to how much caffeine I intake. Not sure if this makes sense, it was just something I happened to come across.

he arrogance and ignorance of LDS is shameful You constantly show how you have never read the word of God Or you have read it - but you choose to follow your own law - the way of CAIN EVERYTHING THAT EXALTS ITSELF ABOVE THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD - WILL BE BROUGHT INTO CAPTIVITY, IN OBEDIENCE TO CHRIST COLOSSIANS 2:21 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? 22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence."
