The Word of Wisdom

I am so grateful for the word of wisdom. My father died early in life as a result of drinking alcohol and as a result of smoking. I have seen it cause a lot of trouble in our family as well. If l hadn't joined the Church could have well gone the same way myself. This commandment saved me and no doubt many others from all that. I always say you will be healthier and wealthier if we live the word of wisdom. Indeed great Wisdom to live it.

There's nothing wrong with coffee and tea. I'm an active member and I drink both nearly every day.

The Word of Wisdom is the most amazing evidence of the love our Father has for us in warning us about the things that the "conspiring men in the latter days" will visit upon people. I am so grateful for the fact that we are warned against those things that create "manufactured" happiness. I grew up in the home of a stepfather whose entire life revolved around violence and abuse of myself, his children and my mother, all while blind drunk. The ongoing use of medicinal products on a daily basis and the constant threats which we lived under. I for one want to stand and watch while cigarette and alcohol manufacturing business are brought down. In the part of the vineyard where I live there is a massive violation of every aspect of the Word of Wisdom and there are constant tales of people who are in bars, shebeens and taverns at the expenses of their young children, the abuse of women and children and the carnage on the roads because of the over consumption of addictive substances.

I wish when people discuss and teach about the Word of Wisdom, they would also talk about the Do's, and not just the Don'ts written in section 89. Yes, we know what to avoid, but do people know what it says we SHOULD be eating? All wholesome herbs, plants, fruits, all grains... And that it is pleasing to the Lord when animals are only used sparingly and with prudence and Thanksgiving in times of winter, cold, or famine. Why do we skip half of the section and focus only on the coffee, tea, and alcohol? I believe individuals could be blessed so much more fully by the word of wisdom if they would follow it more precisely.

I always found it interesting that most people focus on tea, coffee and alcohol but when people over eat, or eat meat in every meal, they are still worthy to enter the temple.

We could be better and more holy by respecting animals and sparing them as we are instructed in The Word of Wisdom.

I honestly think the "conspiring men" refers at least in part to "Big Tobacco", drug dealers, and lot of alcohol manufacturers, not to mention casino owners.

Thank you for this video - I'm very curious. All the Latter-day Saints I know would say that cannabis and psilocybin are definitely against the Word of Wisdom. But I don't see anything in Section 89 that would obviously apply to these plants. When and how did Latter-day Saints decide that cannabis and psilocybin are out of bounds? Thank you!

That is a great question! In section 89 a common feeling is that we are to take care of our bodies. Through a modern living prophet, it has been interpreted to abstain from cannabis and psilocybin for recreational use.
