This was such a tremendous video complimenting the highly-skilled crafts people who assemble the accordion - "aka squeezebox" that I have been playing for 67 years thus far. Born in the Netherlands and moving to Ontario, Canada, I was introduced to the accordion at a home party at the age of 7. That Christmas, my parents surprised me with the 12-base instrument. i now have 3-120 base ones. Thanks for sharing for it truly demonstrates what we owe the inventors and skilled artists who put them together. Have a great 2021 enjoying the sweet sounds of this creative "wind" instrument!

There is also a problem with the high degree of skill and detail that goes into building one. The cost of an instrument will be prohibitive for people to buy it to try playing it. People often buy guitars or electronic pianos or flutes because they’re cheap and they want to give them a try. Because accordions are usually too expensive , especially the Italian ones, only people who can spare the money will buy it.

Pigini make GREAT accordions. I've had mine for 30 years, played non stop . Emperor V model, largest piano accordion with quint freebass. It's still awesome and I've given it a real good thrashing too, still looks and sounds like new. Would love to bring it up to Pigini for a full service though one day. I was lucky enough to meet Massimo and Francesca (hope I spelt those right) when I last took it in 2001, hello from New Zealand to them :) Thank you for putting this great video online, I will get all my students to watch it too, one of them is currently waiting for his one coming from that very factory - exciting!. Actually if I lived in Italy I would love to work there! :)
@musamor7511 жыл бұрын
This has to be one the most exhaustive videos done on accordion building. The Pigini is probably the finest built accordion today, alongside the Hohner Gola, or just under. Italy has a very long history of accordion building, that has never ceased to evolve. Italian instruments have their own sound- they are much more "woody" than their German counterparts. I would highly recommend a real amateur to take a trip to Castelfidardo, where they're all built. The big models shown in this video are the Bayan Serius III model. You'd have to sell your Chevrolet, Chrysler, Oldsmobile, and Toyota to afford it! A real beaute, but a fortune. My heart goes out to the Hohner Gola though ; it has NEVER ever been equaled in accordion history (at least twice the price!!). But they're both very top range and distinctly unique. Enough said

I wish there were documentaries on Excelsior, Giulietti, Sonola, and other brands during the “Golden Age” of accordion manufacturing.
@musamor752 жыл бұрын
Cody lives Excelsior was a fairly independent make. That means that they made most of the parts. Sonola was a Hohner subcontract- they had designed it in Germany, but had it assembled in Castelfidardo. Giulietti a loud mouth commercial salesman from Massachusetts. He had ALL his instruments built by Zero Sette (07) in good old Castelfidardo. An excellent firm who made very fine instruments indeed. However, in that town everybody works for everybody. Even Pigini buys parts from other firms, like the reeds for example. A fascinating place to visit- nearly two hundred years of tradition, and also research.

I know it’s very fascinating how much craft, work, and tradition goes into making an accordion. BUT in some way this is also a source of it’s possible downfall. It makes the instrument prohibitively expensive for most people so people choose to play cheaper instruments which they can replace.

Are Russian accordions any good? I mean, no doubt the Italian and German ones are gonna be great. But I've seen some classical players playing Russian accordions. How do these measure up to the Italian and German ones?
@sebastianbravo88297 жыл бұрын
Andrew Piatek Russian are better because the reeds are all mounted in the same reed plate. Italian/German made accordions use individual reed plates for each tone. The harmonics are better on the individual plate, richer tone and bass
