a lot of unnecessary bashing of the 90s era bowlers here. Sure, the speeds of Dodda Ganesh and Debashish Mohanty was lesser but that in no way takes away the fact that they were quality swing bowlers who had tens of thousands of hours of back breaking and thankless work shaping them on roads or spinning minefields. Consider also that the politicking of the era was at a different level. It’s extremely difficult to transition from state level to Ranji trophy and further graduation is just a matter of mind over matter. The mindset of the era was much more defensive than today and the general confidence, nutrition, exposure (thanks to RUBBISH pitches at the Ranji level), athleticism was way below par. it’s a wonder we got Javagal Srinath from the dustbowls. The generation of today owes this to some fantastic pathbreaking changes in the mindset and the pitches. Kudos to Ganguly, Srinath, Kumble, Dravid and the other management team involved who have brought about this sea change. (yes kumble and srinath were admins as well at KSCA) And the IPL two minute noodle era fans also should know that Abey Kuruvilla, Paras Mhambrey, David Johnson and Javagal Srinath were fast in their prime. Not medium fast.

The problem was with mentality in 90s era with Indian cricket. A mediocre pace bowler comes to scene who can bowl at 130 kmph but the captain and coach would tell him to get his line and length better and cut the pace. So the same pacer now would bowl at 110 kmph and on the other hand Kumble would bowl at 115 kmph.

90’s cricket was only lobby game to satisfy Mumbai and Karnataka.. slow medium pacers came and left like anything.. only Srinath was quick.. aother medium pacer turned off spinner prabhakar was a burden to the team who was sent off by Jayasuriya’s power hitting… then came Venky.. another slow medium leg cutter (spinner) and stayed there for some time… its a pity that fast bowlers like David Johnson (also from Karnataka) should have given more opportunities… but was dropped after 2-3 matches by Azhar… I remember when Sachin was captain, there was a match where 7 out of 11 players were from Mumbai only… Amre, Kanitkar, Agarkar, out of form Kambli, and 2 more I dont recall…fact is, Ganguly started picking real talents and only after 99 world cup, things started to change for Indian cricket…and there is no doubt about that
