That was my hero as a kid. We didn't have many individuals that stood eye to eye with the best in the world at their sport. That it was our summer game, and that the biggest name in the game were our cousin's across the ditch... We were all just so invested in our national team.. more so than we had ever been before. I lived and breathed cricket because of Paddles. And what a great man. Great competitor. I read everything on him or about him. Watched his video till the tape wore out. Years later I met him. Got to tell him how much I admired him. I told him my experience with cricket gave me the platform to give everything I had to future sporting endeavours. I saw the world on the back of that. Represented our country with pride. He gave a talk that day to a small town country club - tiny little RSA type place. I was driving through by chance. I went in sat down and Sir Richard Hadlee came out and held court. There were probably 50-60 people there. At late 30s I was the youngest. He spoke about the importance of playing sport, not just to make up the numbers. You play to win. Period. Take care of that and everything will happen. Play to WIN. The general feeling in New Zealand for years has been this thing that somehow being too competitive is ugly. Not nice. Unsporting. I realised something that day. That concept never occured to Paddles because being a gentleman in the game, being a decent human... That's a given. That's who he is, what he is. It's not in doubt. So whats left if you're not worried about how you look or what people think? Because you are secure in all that. Nothing. It's just you, and the game. And you play to fucken win. No excuses, get it done. Do your best.

But they had support at the other end and didn't bowl against their own batsmen. Aka Marshall bowling to Greenidge or Richards, McGrath to Hayden, Ponting or Waugh
@mikespearwood391421 күн бұрын
@@CraigStanaway You're failing to consider that he DID have his numbers pumped up by a sheer lack of bowling competition. @mikespearwood391421 күн бұрын
Not sure about that. Would be up there though. Syd Barnes, Malcolm Marshall and others are probably better. Wickets taken and 5-fers are misleading in and of themselves because some teams will have bowlers fighting to take wickets off each other, something rarely that Hadlee had to deal with.

Hadlee played mainly in Australia & New Zealand with few overseas tours where as Roberts bowled in all test playing countries during his era & bowled on all types of wicket. Besides, he had to face intensified competition from his legendary team lmates like Holding, Garner, Marshall etc. Hadlee was the main strike bowler mildly supported by Chatfield, Lans Cairns etc. As a result he had a better opportunity to take wicket compared to Roberts. Therefore, Roberts was better than him in terms of bowling on all types of pitch. Hadlee bowled on pitches only famous for bounce & swing but Roberts bowled successfully on fast, slow, spinning all types of track. This proves his superiority.
