It helps when this much footage of a subject endlessly narrating his own career to journalists for 30 years running. Also when a 30 minute video that is 80% autobiographical narration gets complimented for having almost no narration. Interesting narrative device.
@Tyler-vw9bh4 ай бұрын
There's a documentary called LA92 about the Rodney King incident and riots that was gripping and informative. It wasnt until after watching it (or maybe showing it to a friend) that I realized there was zero narration or new interviews. It told the entire story with real footage; I was always impressed by that and wish more docs would do the same.
@Tyler-vw9bh4 ай бұрын
@@christofthedead It makes for a much better video than some guy talking in a monotone voice over stock footage. Also, I imagine it's a lot more difficult to piece together a coherent but focused and succinct story with all that footage than one might think. It was a sad day when I realized most youtube 'documentaries' are literally guys reading the wikipedia page (in some cases word for word) and using stock footage. Seriously, next time you watch one just have the wikipedia page pulled up. I would much rather watch something like this.

Quentin is the antithesis of modern Hollywood. In a world of IP milking and unoriginal remakes and rehashes to make a quick buck, he is a shining example of how having an actual artistic vision, and the integrity to make something that isn’t just a bunch of corporate board room decisions can make all the difference.

I’ve watched a fair share of video essays on Tarantino, but this was something else! The composition of the piece was astounding. In a sense, it resembled part of QT’s style… you took all these ingredients (clips, sound bites, music) and combined them into a spectacular narrative concoction. When people say QT rips off films - no, he simply takes a handful of ingredients, whether homage/reference, callback, music etc. and presents them to the audience for appreciation and acknowledgment of what has come before, building a unique and fulfilling film cuisine, that is quite simply, genius. As others pointed out, telling a story without much narration is what makes this video special. It's what makes a good documentary or report on any subject special. Social media has made many of us so vain that people seem to believe that the way to go is making a vlog about yourself while the subject at hand ends up as an apropos. That couldn't be further from the truth. I don't know who Danny McMahon is and I don't need to - I only know that he has so much love for the subject he wanted to talk about that he barely talked about it at all and let it speak for itself. Good job. Makes me want to watch Pulp Fiction again and finally catch up on all the Tarantino's I haven't watched yet!

Quentin is a prime example for me of two things. Know your field and separate the art from the artist. The first is obvious. Barely anyone working today can compare to his encyclopedic knowledge about cinema and the craft of filmmaking, and what a magnificent asset that is for him to create his movies. The second is a little more difficult, because a lot of what makes his movies so good is what he himself brings to them, but it doesn't deny that he is still a bigheaded egotist with some very questionable past and present behaviours to say the least. But him being and doing that doesn't deny his art. Nor his journey from film fan to filmmaker. And it certainly doesn't stop his movies from being a cornerstone of cinema. Just as Dodford has easily grown into being a cornerstone of KZbin. Another person who knows about his field and the subjects he covers. Another magnificent doc, and yet I'm already eager for the next one....

@@abhiraajsingh5878 No because Ten Years Gone by Led Zeppelin rules, but all those guys are fucking creeps. Definitely separate art from artists.

@@abhiraajsingh5878 Kevin Spacey is a controversial person. But his role in House of Cards is undoubtly amazing. Maybe because he was playing himself. The art is still there and it's good. You can't not seperate them even if you wanted to.

He comes across as a guy who doesn't suffer fools, and his definition of fool would be quite broad

@@seaque. Spacey's was found innocent in the trial. The allegations look like they may have been a little inflated, not a shock, destroyed his career though.
