D&B here at last!! I enjoyed your comparison of the tool and your "home made" version. I think there is a place for both. However, as you have just demonstrated, D&B can be emulated quite easily so I am wondering why they didn't introduce Clone and Stamp first as this is something you can't do any other way (apart from erase, but more intricate work needs C&S - still having to hop over to another program if C&S is needed. I appreciate your extreme attention to detail. As we know, the devil is always to be found hiding in the details and if we are not concerned about the subtle details then, frankly, we are not worthy of calling ourselves true artists but are actually nothing but crude hacks. Obviously, not all things we produce are needed to have the ultimate high art treatment but for those works that do warrant it compromising and saying "that's good enough" is like swearing.

Masterclass would be nice. What is missing from these tools is the normal highlights, midtones, darks, options for the dodge and burn. Feels like a quickly cobbled-together and half-finished module dropped in because users said "where's the dodge and burn". Pretty much like the HDR add-in that has no control for the user from the makers of Aurora (it is barely better than nothing - but then I do still have Aurora). I've been a user of Macphun (skylum) since Aurora was first released and I still only see NEO or AI as effects plugins for use with apps that have much better core editing tools

Hello Anthony. I like your alternative method. I think I see one problem with it. If you open a RAW file you don't get a mask option in Develop.
@AnthonyTurnham2 жыл бұрын
Hi John. Usually dodge and burn comes later in your workflow. So dev raw would be used to set the base of the photo as shown in a lot of my other videos, then you'd build your edit from there. On subsequent applications of the develop tool the mask becomes available.

We have reached version 1.2 of Luminar Neo, a program that since version 1.05 has a huge bug. After cropping a photo proportionally with, for example, the original dimensions of 5184x3456, when we finish editing if we export indicating that we want the original dimensions, Neo simply ignores the instruction and keeps the dimensions after the crop. As I mentioned the problem only arises I think in version 1.05 (or 1.06 I'm not sure anymore). And no one at Skylum detects the bug. As long as it persists, the acquisition is not justified.

How does D&B go with RAW files taken in colour but edited to various B&W tonings (not via BW Tool but via a gradual process of edits) or for Sepia

I'd need to do a bit more research into that for a definitive answer. I'd expect similarly aggressive and still better to be done through the develop tool.

Couldn't you could just put a grey layer on top in luminosity mode then dodge and burn that layer?
@AnthonyTurnham2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jackie, it's a nice idea but the dodge and burn tool used on the grey layer doesn't "see" the information underneath so effectively it's no different to painting with a white and black brush to dodge and burn. Which, yes is of course an option, however, luminosity blend mode also has it's own limitations when dealing with saturation shifts (or the lack of them) when you change the brightness or darkness with more intensity.
@jackiecraney77092 жыл бұрын
Aha! Thanks. I assumed layers in Luminar might work the same way they do in Photoshop. Off-topic related sidenote: it would be great if Luminar could send layers back and forth like we can send Photoshop layers to Luminar and back again. I think it'll happen eventually, so everything works as a plugin to everything else. A bit like how midi and vst became universal standards and transformed the audio world, making it better for everybody.

@AnthonyTurnham2 жыл бұрын
Bottom line is Luminar is very dependent on AI and takes a lot of system resources to run. Fast CPU, large amount of RAM and ideally installed on an m.2 ssd for optimum performance. I also shoot large raw files but find 32gb ram and the Ryzen multithread chipset handles it well.

Does photoshop dodge and burn desaturate colors? Also, why doesn’t the company just fix this damaged tool? I gotta laugh as Luminar and ON1 have now both lost me as a customer going forward. BOTH companies engaged id]n a quasi bait and switch practices. You but Neo and then only after you buy it, they start hitting you up for big $ for shit that should be in the damn orig. program! These “add ons” would have been product updates a year ago. Now, they lure the user in with a LACKING product, then want to charge you another 80.00 to bring it up to speed! Pathetic and a low blow for previous customers. ON1 is just as guilty.
@AnthonyTurnham2 жыл бұрын
I use ethe same technique in Photoshop because of the change in saturation. It's complex to explain but it's just an optical by-product of the lightening/darkening effect. Personally I'm okay with the new extensions. The core of the program is all there and you can fully edit without any of the specialist extensions. HDR, focus stacking and AI upscaling are all things that most companies that produce them charge for as they're pretty dedicated bits of code/development. Photoshop is the exception - however that's a subscription model and you also get these tools included if you choose the subscription with Luminar.
