Definitely need to see additional types (landscape, travel, wildliife, portrait, etc.) of dodge & burn techniques.

I prefer to dodge and burn using two seperate curves layers ( the dodge one set to brighten, the burn set to darken ) with masks set to luminosity blend mode. This way I keep my dodging separate from my burning plus if I want to change anything it's easy to alter the mask.I can also change the opacity independent of each other. The only aspect of the method you show here I don't like is you have to repaint using a 50% grey brush to remove mistakes which is a pain compared to using the X key to simply paint white or black on a mask. 😉

Great point! Did not think of that but it definitely makes sense. As they say, it is more than one way to skin a cat in PS.

This is great-- I've dodged and burned in the darkroom, and now I FINALLY know how to do it in photoshop!

Your PS and LR videos are my technical library. Whenever I want a refresher I use your youtube videos. Thanks. I've seen people do this with just the brush tool, rather than the Dodge and Burn tool. It looks like you have more tonal control with the brush tool.

Solved one of my many Photoshop problems. Would greatly appreciate if you would address in future videos the dodge and burn technique using portrait examples.

Love this tip! I've never tried it but it seems like it would really help the highlights in the images to pop! Thank you!

Appreciate this video, taking a photo shop class at PBC Corporate and continuing education. This video is helping me understand dodging and burning better and how to use it.

Much more subtle and controllable than the adjustment brush in ACR, what I used to use. Thanks.

An advantage of using the 50% gray layer is that it makes it easier to see, and possibly refine, what you have done. This is a great trick.

This looks more powerful and nuanced than the Lightroom version. A video comparing the two might be interesting.

I really like this video, especially using the 50% gray overlay. I may have better outcomes using your technique. Thank you 😊

Thank you so much. I would appreciate seeing dodge and burning for portraits. Also, when using your first technique, I am not getting much of a difference after dodging over and over?

Thanks ! Question - when you're working on the gray layer - how exactly does the dodge and burn settings for the ranges ( midtones, hightlights , shadows ) are being picked ? Is it because the blend mode chosen is overlay then the dodge and burn tools actually see through and examine the tones of the layer beneath ?

Another way of burning and dodging would be to use two 50% layers and to paint one layer black and the other layer white.

What are the advantages of that? That sounds like a lot of extra steps to accomplish the same thing. Edited: I asked that, but it seems like the same concept as @dunnymonster 's post below this one where he uses curve layers instead but separating out the dodging and burning makes more sense now.

Thanks Anthony! I am a beginner in PS but you made this video easy to follow and understand. Is PS dodge and burn better, the same or worse than Luminar 4 dodge and burn?

I’m assuming this is more powerful than the brush tool in Lightroom, but is it worth bringing in to PS just for these updates?

It's not 50% grey and blend mode overlay, it's 50% grey and blend mode LUMINOSITY. So you started off wrong. There's a huge difference between overlay and luminosity. Time for you to learn something yourself.

No need to be a doof! Obviously the technique that he used works as proven by the video. If you have another way to do it (which there are many in PS) then make your own video as you could stand to learn that you don't know it all.
