Dodge Caliber D.I.Y oil change! (2008)

In this video I'm just quickly going over me doing an oil change on my daily driven vehicle. This specific vehicle is a 2008 Dodge Caliber SXT, however, other than the type of oil and oil filter (which can be found in your owners manual or online), and the size socket for your specific drain plug (also can be found in owners manual or online) the process is the same for all vehicles.

how’d the 10W -30 run do you recommend it or no?

I'd say stick with the 5w-20. Car didn't really feel much different but didn't see any benefits.

You might need an extension to take off oil filter is the most important part of this video. If you don't have that tool and extension you wasted your time.

Hey Chad, recently I went to a place to change my oil for me. However, they were unable to do so because they weren’t able to attach something. Sorry for my bad explanation, but they said it should be in a shape of a hexagon and mine was all run down and smoothed out. They told me to go to O’Rileys and get a part. However, I do not remember the parts name. Any idea what I am talking about?

Could not tell you man I'm sorry. It's possible that maybe they were having trouble removing your oil drain plug, maybe it was stripped. However, a shop should be able to figure that out. I'm sorry I just don't want to give any information or advice without proper knowledge.

Ikram Nanlawala Thanks for the fast response. That sounds like it was the issue. They mentioned it being stripped and whoever did my oil change last messed it up. I’ll check on that later today. If that is the issue I suppose I will not be able to change the oil myself?

The oil drain plug is pretty much just a bolt that goes into the oil pan to allow you to drain the oil for your oil change. Normally that bolt has a head on it that takes a socket and the size of that socket varies based on your vehicle. I have an older car at home where I pretty much have to use an allen key or a hex bit socket to remove my drain plug. There's definitely always a way to remove a stripped bolt. If you're going to have a shop do this oil change anyways they should have no problem removing the stripped drain plug. Either have them get you a new drain plug or go get one and have them install that one, this way when you do your future oil changes you won't run into that issue.

But to simply answer your question, you can most definitely do it yourself. If you consider yourself fairly inexperienced and don't want to take the challenge of removing the stripped bolt just allow the shop to do it. It'll make things easier and then you can do your future oil changes with no issues.

I put the jack on the k-member! Never heard of that being an issue.
