I replace the rear struts and sway bar bushings on my 2010 Dodge Caliber. Should be the same for all years.

So people keep telling me that you don't have to remove the cargo panels to remove the upper strut bolts. This is true. The access flaps are in a horrible position and make no sense at all to me. Yet, people seem to want to debate this and to be honest I really don't care. Having clear access to bolts is better for a novice to make it easy to catch the bolts on assembly, avoid crossing threads and actually be able to Torque them. I try to keep in mind that novice DIY mechanics are watching my videos and like to have good visuals

Perfect video! I am grateful that you've maintained this video. I have a 2010 Dodge Caliber Express with 162,834 miles. Both front and rear struts have never been replaced. I'm the second owner of the vehicle starting at 60,000 miles. With the exception of the clutch, I've done all the maintenance. I am considering replacing the struts even though the car ride is good. This is still the best video I've seen. Thank you for keeping it simple sir 😉😎

Thank you so much, I was struggling to get my old rear struts/springs off, pried the living heck out of the suspension with a 3 foot pry bar (as recommended in a car forum), and couldn't get them back in, getting more and more frutstrated.. Your demonstrating which bolts to remove makes the whole thing easier, now I have confidence to reinstall it without killing myself. BTW, my 2011 jeep patriot appears to have exactly the same rear suspension (and even interior plastic panels, etc. Thanks again!

PLEASE READ. Something to note. Some people have mentioned that you can access the strut bolts be lifting up an access area in the plastic panel and not have to remove the panels. This car doesn't have that ability. For some reason look where the flip access portion is in relationship to the strut bolts. It is father back. Its easier to remove the panel so you have a clear shot at the strut rather than making silly 1/8 turns of a box wrench under some bent plastic. Again THERE IS NO CLEAR ACCESS AREA. If there was I'd use it! Not a mistake not an error. There has also been mention of bushings needing to be tightened when the car is level. These bushings in this car float. So I don't know why people insist on giving me advice on twisting rubber etc, when that is not a function of those bushings. Take the time to read other comments and be polite to one another.

Great quality video! Thanks a bunch! I particularly appreciate the call outs for the wrench sizes on each bolt as well as the ft-lbs of torque required for each. I have to replace the front and rear ball joint control arms as well as all four strut assemblies on my '08 Caliber. Belle Tire wants ~$2000 for parts and labor. I'm going to try and tackle it myself and save some $$. I'll have this video close by when I start work on it. I just ordered all the parts tonight. Thanks again.

Paul, you obviously have experience with transmissions. How big of a job is it to swap out the tranny on the Caliber? I have the manual transmission, 1.8L engine. I have a colleague at work that has a full hoist, tranny jacks, tools etc. I'm on the fence if I want to replace this tranny or cut my losses with the car. I just replaced everything suspension related on the car, so I'm finding it hard to walk away from it now. If its a really big job, even with the proper tools, I may just walk away. Thoughts?

Out of curiosity, have you had any computer issues with your Caliber, or is it just mine? I have the '07 SE and for the past 4 years when we go to get it inspected it fails due to the SAME errors every time. We tried having the system flashed but our computer is beyond that, it rejected the flashing three times. On top of that the Check engine light and ABS lights stay on; at this point I just use them to indicate the car is running(sarcastically). I know I need a new computer, especially living in an Emissions Inspection county and that's the next big purchase. I just won the battle on buying the Struts for the thing. It took 3 months of harassment to finally get the "OK". I don't even want to know how much longer I have to go for the computer...
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 7 жыл бұрын
I haven't had any computer issues. I did have some oddball crank sensor issues where the car wouldn't start but they did go away. Could be corroded connectors. Although it may seem expensive, I tend to go to dealers for electronic repairs because they can stick the parts back on the shelf if they misdiagnose. Often times you pay for parts the local garage says you needed to have replaced because they didn't pinpoint the issue.

@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 7 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree. There are access areas in the plastic panel but it takes more time trying to get to the studs. It is easier to just remove the panel. You could actually just change the shock portion, but its actually more labor and the cost isn't that much more. But compared to some old school $19.95 shocks...

Watch the video at about 15.15. I mention the torque specs of the lower bolts. I know I shouldn't assume people have a basic knowledge of torque specs for standard size bolts but there are many charts written in the back of most shop manuals. The upper strut bolts can be 18-25 ft lbs

If you can, but I don't think they make a whole a assembly for the front. So you would have to get a machine shop or spring compressor to install your old springs on the new strut. Monroe I thinks make a whole front assembly.

Changing the rear struts seems to be easier as I thought! :-) Interesting that the tripods under the car body on both sides hold the car constantly. Although the struts are pulled out of there position. Everything locks quite easy. The only things the car mechanic changed in my car were the struts by preserving the original, still good, springs.. I don't know if this was the better way around.
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 7 жыл бұрын
It depends on the condition of your springs. If the car is sagging the struts alone won't change that. My suspension height changed. It is a lot less time consuming to do the package vs old springs on new struts. If you are paying a shop $55 to $100 an hour for labor and not doing it yourself it's something to consider.

Thanks for a very informative video. You show the details of things like interior body panels, that most people take for granted me know. Ive had to spend more time on panels than the main part I was replacing. Overall a great video. I"m looking a replacing the rear crossmember on my 2009 Caliber soon. Don"t know where they got the steel that the crossmembers are made of, but I think they need a refund. I"m sure it won"t be too long before I have to replace the front one. Also a quick question. My Caliber has an issue with the steering. Usually mainly during accelleration, it will shift either right or left very quickly as much as 3 feet. Getting on the dangerous side to say the least. The outer tie rod ends were replaced right before I bought the car. I"m guessing ball joints possibly ? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Do you do any videos on on the CVT transmission oil change and what to look out for. I read a couple of Caliber forums and the guys said their oil is black and they changed the CVT filter and CVT cooler filter and everything was OK. I was getting ready to order my parts and talked to a couple of mechanics that said if the oil is black and you change the filter and oil it will wreck the CVT. Not sure if I believe the mechanics but if you have any words for thought on that I'd like to hear them. Shop manuals give torque specs. Experianced people probably dont need a torque wrench because they have a feel . Others break bolts and strip threads because they dont. Its that simple.

hi, no need to disassemble the inner panel. It has a window to remove the thread. For the all very good.

Obviously your skipping and not listening. Watch the video.The "window" is not anywhere near the bolts for the struts. Some cars it is and some it is not. I have no reason why that is.

Good in my dodge caliber 2.0 CRD there is a window and you can access the shock absorber bolts without removing anything. I at least don't take anything away. It is more uncomfortable but you do not have to remove the panels. I did not remove them. Regards.@@GearBoxVideo

As mentioned some you do and some you don't. The problem with making blanket statements such as not needing to do something when you are basing your knowledge on 1 instance doesn't equate to experience. This is an issue I see with people giving free advice on forums when it comes to rebuilding or working on anything. I serviced and installed just about everything in 40 plus years of automotive work and I am still learning. I've learned that there are always variations and that it is very easy for people to feel knowledgeable by cutting and pasting links they found on the internet ( via Google) rather than from actually doing any work. Just a thought. I'm not an idiot and trust me, if there was correct easy access I would use it. There are some pictures on the internet where you can clearly see good access. Great. Use it. Otherwise it's super fast to remove the panels and have full access to the strut.
