When someone flies by my wife and I in our car we always watch down the road if they get pulled over or get into an accident. We always hope they won't get into or cause an accident, but that has happened to us a time or two. We've witnessed speeders get pulled over many times. Speeding doesn't get you there faster by enough time to justify driving that way, even on rural highways. Speeding causes additional stress and tiredness, no matter the circumstances. What we hate in rural areas is people who drive through small towns without regard to the 25-35 mph limit on what is our main street. Ever try to walk your kids to the park to play or get an ice cream cone when someone rips through town doing 60 in a 25? They don't stop at crosswalks either. If it was up to me that person should be banned from the area for awhile.

@@DonCornelius366 cop didn’t take too long to respond, he was probably going to radio ahead to another officer/sherif as he realized the charger crashed. Plus you have to take into account merging onto a freeway from 0 mph safely. Getting rear ended by someone going the minimum of 55 would still land the cop in the ICU. Plus there was a truck coming by one lane over a second or two after cop merged into the far right lane. Inertia and the angle of how he entered the lane would have put him directly in the path of the truck if he was rear ended, and even if the truck driver slammed on his brakes, the cop is dead in that situation. From the second the charger crashed to the cop arriving on scene only 30ish seconds pass and you can see no one else crashed as a result. The cop responded as good as he could. Everything else in your comment is pretty accurate tho.

Metro Detroit has not changed. When I was in law school during the 1990's in Detroit, speed limits on the interstates around Metro Detroit were loosely enforced. There was also a factor that may still be present today, a serious under manning of state troopers for Metro Detroit. I recall something about only eight troopers per shift for the entire interstate system around Metro Detroit. That is literally one trooper for every 25 or so miles of Interstate. Given the number of accidents, disabled motorists, etc. at any given time, there was and probably little if any manpower for speed enforcement. In this case there was a low probability that another trooper would be able to intersect the 120 MPH motorist before he existed the Interstate.

State police wrote, “The trooper saw the driver lose control and crashed around the winding roadway, which contained a Honda SUV and a garbage truck.” “The driver of the charger ran away on foot leaving an empty pistol holster behind in the vehicle.” Using witnesses’ descriptions, police from Detroit and Hamtramck joined the MSP to search the area for the driver. The man was found and arrested, and a state police K-9 unit recovered a loaded Glock pistol with a 50 round drum magazine. Authorities determined the car was reported stolen in Georgia, and Detroit police “advised that it is likely the same orange Dodge Charger that ran from them on several occasions in the past week,” MSP said.
