Heard a rumor that Crown Dodge in Ventura, California was out of new inventory, so they bought up a bunch of show-worthy classic cars to sell instead. It was surreal to show up to a car dealership in 2022 and see the lot looking like THIS.

Be extremely careful with these places, especially if it's a car that looks like it has had a recent restoration. People buy from classic car lots and find all sorts of crazy shit, like rust covered in Bondo, VIN tags welded on from entirely different vehicles, rotted frames covered in paper or tape and painted over, damaged coupes made to look like "convertibles," and on and on. These lots seem very idyllic, but it takes a lot of money to make an old car look like new, and dealerships do all they can to maximize their profit margins.

Not to mention classic car dealerships are way overpriced. In many cases even 30 to 50% higher than you can find similar from a private seller. About 6 months ago I sold a 66 Le Mans ragtop, frame off resto with a 463 cid to a dealership. It was flawless, with all original steel and interior. It was appraised at $24,000 by both Hagerty and a Meccum and I sold it for $22,000 to the dealership. Three weeks later the dealership had it for sale for $68,000, and did nothing to it but wash and wax. It's still sitting in their lot.

I can't believe that every car that you touched was open for you to inspect and enjoy what it felt like to just go back in time and see for yourself what car shopping for a dream car is like. Not one salesperson approached you about touching or getting into the cars at all. What a fun, exciting evening that you guys had, right? That was a blast from the past. Believe it or not. Once upon a time there were used car lots all over the place that had much of the same inventory. Granted, they were used cars, not show quality like in the video. However, a lot were well keep up nice cars. You could find almost any car from the 50's, 60's and 70's by just going around to the lots. Most places did not have as many as Crown has. But the bigger ones did have a lot of cars to pick from. They often would direct you to one of their competitors, if they knew that place had the car you were looking for. No internet or cell phones. Every trip was an adventure. Anyone recall Rand McNally?

@ Tom C-- When the first oil embargo was over around March of 1974, the price for a gallon of gas about doubled from 29 cents to about 60 cents in Maryland. I don't think we paid a $1 per gallon until the 1980's. In my first year of high school in 1970, I got a part time job at a grocery store called Safeway, and was making about $2.25 an hour. I felt lucky to make this much, as most of my friends working at fast food places or pumping gas at a service station were making about a $1 an hour less than me. When I was a kid in the late 1950's and early 1960's, I can remember paying a nickel for a full size candy bar.

I have owned almost all car types during my 67 years. When I was in my teens I didn't even mess with car lots. Down in S. Fla. there were cars on lawns and corners, store parking lots, just everywhere. They almost all had the keys in them. I bought a 1962 Lincoln Continental for $50.00. Interior was perfect and it ran and shifted the same. Paint was a little faded but buffed out. 57 Pontiac, 65 Corvair, 68 Sport Satellite, 1960 Dodge Senaca Dart w/ wide block 318, 63 T-Bird, swivel seats, tilt and telescopic and side to side steering wheel. That car had a console all the way from up on the dash to the rear package deck, with auto. shifter on the console. Corvair truck with a side ramp and tail gate. 65 sky blue ford like new. The guy asked me to start it up. I replied, it is running! He put his ear on the hood. Had a 56 2 door chevy for 42 years. 55 chevy pick up like new I built an engine for. (with a little cam lope) 1951 Chevy P.U. Put a ford rear and a 283 in. 1966 factory motor home with a 327 auto like new also (chevy) 1959 2 dr. Pontiac, Maroon all like brand new. The carpet even had the sparkles it was so new like. Another 62 Lincoln, this one white with red leather int. They both had the 430 C.I. engines. Drove that one across the country more than once. When I sold her she was still just as I had bought it. 1959 Buick with the wings. The starter switch was under the gas pedal. In Ala. we bought 1951 chevy fast backs or fleetlines, and only once did we have to pay more than $5.00 for a running car. We bought one for $15.00. They would not come off that price for anything. Of course, I was too young to get a DL at that time. But there were no cops out in the country. Every now and again we would get bold and drive our cars to town. 8 miles or so. Wow, got so wound up looking at the cars I began to relive my child car hood. Thanks for the video, brought back some really good memories! Thumbs up of course! Today I own a 1949 Chevy 2 dr. w/ a 350/350 auto. Three tone paint. Of course, I am getting too old to work on them anymore, some health issues didn't help. Might be selling the 49 pretty soon. OH! and yes, she runs like a scalded cat! I buy the good tires with the white lettering so, I don't go burning them off. But you know, you have to know so I did it once. Didn't even push halfway on the pedal and she started spinning. No brake holding. Brand new Holley too. Later car guys!!! I had more cars but, fingers and eyes haqve limits, gotta go. Later.

All this tells us: the baby boomers have had their 'fun" with these cars they remembered when they were kids and teens. Now its time for the Gen X ers, Millenials and later on Gen Z ers to enjoy these classics. A year ago, that Vette would have cost about $80k. Now they want $140k, plus tax. Still a good long term investment, but if you buy it with a recession likely, you will be underwater for a while. Best to wait until prices drop unless you can wait several years for appreciation, and these cars are too nice to drive in traffic. These are for investors, not your average enthusiast. Fun to look!

I'm confused. Used car dealers try to sell a car for 4x what they paid for it. Only selling for 3x is considered losing face. I don't understand how they can hope to achieve this in the vintage car trade, though. Unless there are a lot of billionaires in the area. All their stuff looks first rate, but marking a car up $60,000 dollars seems really farfetched.

_"Crown Dodge in Ventura, California was out of new inventory, so they bought up a bunch of show-worthy classic cars to sell instead."_ Their inventory is light years *_better_* in the looks dept. than _any_ modern cars. *Light years better.* The mid-1950s through early 1970s was Detroit's GREATEST era in automobile styling but you know that else you'd not be here. Kudos to the people or person at Crown Dodge who came up with this concept.

@@1940limited it’s a dealership, so unless they are there under some sort of consignment, the dealer bought them all to resell, and they aren’t going to do that if there is no profit in it. In other words, dealership markup. But these are used cars. You could have any of these significantly cheaper if you are buying from a private seller. This has always been the case, as dealers attempt to sell trade ins or auction cars. So why buy from crown? Well, they will most likely accept your trade in, and offer some sort of financing. This is something private sellers can’t do. Also, classic car enthusiasts already know where and how to get these things, but your average Joe, who never even considered owning a classic car, shows up wanting a new car, only there are no new cars. They have preowned, no warranty, “as is” cars. They seem to check all the boxes, minus heated seats and navigation, and you were only going to keep it 3-5 years anyway. Why not? I feel that’s why there are so many boring white and black vehicles on the road. Your average buyer can’t think for themselves. They don’t know what they want. But then they see these on the lot. Blown away by the variety of choices. They aren’t going to buy the $350k impala. But they were going to finance a $40k vehicle. They didn’t know such vehicles were in their price range or even existed.

@@DanSmith-cb5vj I’m 100% with you. I’ve only ever paid cash for used cars. Never very much. I’ve had a LOT of cars. A few cool ones before they were expensive. But I wouldn’t throw myself into debt over a car either. I did watch to the end. That was for a fuelie, C2. They are big bucks no mater how you slice it. I was making a more general reference to classic cars being up at new car prices. If I was personally going to spend $50k+ on a car (which I’m not) I’d go for a classic, over a new plastic car every time. A Tesla model 3 is in the $50-$60k price range. Great car. I’d take a $50k Chevelle all day. 50k for a new mustang? or a 50k for a classic mustang? Easy choice. There’s no doubt new cars are faster, handle better, etc, but not nearly as raw or cool. 🤙✌️
